Chapter 10

They were kept somewhere in an abandoned factory. A light somewhere dangling from the roof giving him some glimpse of the room they were being held in. Large containers wrapped in plastic and ready to be transported stood around them. Byron’s face ached from all the punches he has been taking. Tied up to a chair with his hands cuffed behind his back. He was positioned opposite of Raine who was also tied up and cuffed to a chair. Raine kept keeping a straight face even when she was bleeding out. Every punch he took to his face, she would just pull her lip up in disgust. She didn’t even scream or showed a pinch of fear. He still didn’t know who or what she was. He was starting to consider that she was some kind of hired killer. Every part of his body should ache after that massive attack on George and Evelyn’s house, he should even have a concussion but he was suffering from nothing only the shiner that was starting to form around his left eye. Somehow, he was alright. “Where is the file Matthews handed to you?” The man asked again. His face was covered by some mask. Dressed in some black and grey cameo. Stood at least 6.4. 120 pounds. Must have served in the military by the looks of him. His interrogation style was a bit different than Byron’s and every time Byron would not answer his question, he was met by a fist to the face. “Still not talking?” Terence asked, walking up to them. Acting like their boss. The big man took a step back and shook his head at Terence. Byron didn’t see or sense any other men and wondered if it was only Terence and his bodyguard. “He is a tough man. Takes a lot to break this one from his oath.” Terence rolled up his sleeves. Grabbed a chair, positioned it in front of Byron and sat down in front of him. “You just don’t learn, do you, Tait?” Byron narrowed his eyes at him. Spitting out a mouthful of his blood. “Even when you are looking death straight in the eye, you still try to be a hero.” Byron’s mouth set in a hardline. “You killed Evelyn and then George. Doesn’t your conscience bother you?” He asked Dunn. His voice hoarse and filled with disgust. He wondered how many people Dunn killed while being a cop. How many of the cases they were assigned to had his handy work written all over them? He once called Dunn a friend. Trusted him with his life. He even considered introducing his sister to him. Dunn had the nerve to smile at him. “All this time you thought Rick was the corrupted cop.” He seemed pleased with himself. “Evelyn was going to expose me and I could not let that happen. So, yes. I had to take care of that problem but then George had to reach out to you. I couldn’t let them blow my cover.” Byron’s lips drew back in a snarl. “Tell me where the file is, Tait,” Byron smirked at him. “Why don’t you go to hell? Maybe the devil will tell you where I hid it.” Byron winched when Dunn struck him with a solid punch in the face. Byron threw his back and laughed. “You are a dead man either way. You will die at my hand.” Tait threatened. Gesturing something towards the big man. Byron gritted his teeth when the big man grabbed the chair Raine was tied to and pushed her closer. He felt sick to his stomach when he realized that they were going to use Raine to make him talk. “You always did have a soft spot for women, poor people and veterans. Let’s see if you can handle watching someone die because of you.” Raine glared at the man before his fist me the side of her face. Byron clenched his hands, feeling his rage coiling through his veins as he watched Raine taking punch after punch. She growled when the guy punched her in the stomach where she was hurt. She stunned him when she laughed at the guy. “Is that all you’ve got?” She spat at him. “I’ve met worse.” “Hmm, we got another tough one,” Terence muttered handing the big guy a pocket knife. “You know what to do.” Raine laughed again as she stared at the man in the eye when he pulled the knife on her Her voice hoarse when she spoke. “You are in trouble now.” She lifted her hands in the air. The cuffs dangled from her arm before dropping to the ground. Byron’s eyes narrowed as the lights flickered. The cuffs around his wrists popped open as if someone uncuffed them. He grimaced as he brought his hands forward, rubbing his wrists. Byron watched Raine throw a kick to the big man’s knee, then one to his shin. When he came down to attack her, she bumped her head against his and he staggered. She on the other hand fell back with the chair that broke her fall. She jumped up, twirled when the guy came at her and threw a kick to his face. She jabbed the knife out of the guy’s hand, picked it up and looked at Byron. “Close your eyes!” Raine yelled at him. While she continued to attack the guy. She kicked his feet out from underneath him, she went down as well but wrapped her legs around his neck and squeezed. She then held the knife in her hand. “Look away!” She ordered again. He looked away and then heard the gurgling sound of blood oozing in the guy’s throat and suffocating him.  Byron heard footsteps and grunts all around him. He watched Raine attack without stopping or taking a breath. He tried to look for Terence but he was already gone. That weak bastard. Raine was outnumbered by the number of bad guys surrounding her. Byron tried to go for a gun when a dagger flew through the air which she caught effortlessly and jammed the dagger into a guy’s neck as someone else took care of the rest. He then sensed a second presence. They were fast and light on their feet. Using the shadows to their advantage. His shoulders tensed when a man pointed a gun barrel at his forehead. He waited for the shot but it never came, instead, he heard the clean slice of a sharp sword and a grunt. Then he saw her. Standing in front of him. Her back to him. Dressed in black armour from head to toe. Black cloak. Sword in each hand. She moved with agility through the assailants. Raine stood with her back to hers as they took in their surroundings. Both lowered their weapons when it was all over.   “Well, that was fun,” Raine said, wiping the dagger blade clean before handing it back to the hooded person. “Sorry, I took so long.” Raine shrugged. “I like what you did with your eyes,” Raine said and then lowered herself onto a chair, pressing her hand to her torso. The hooded person squatted down in front of her, removing her hood and then pressed her hand to Raine’s waist. He watched a purple light coming from her hand and danced across Raine’s skin. “You’ve evolved,” Raine muttered. “I have Edna to thanks for that.” The person stood up and turned to face him. Her beauty caught him by surprise. Like her sister. She had long black hair that was neatly braided. Purple eyes. Plump lips. Luscious curves. “They sure did a number on you.” She said squatting down in front of him. “Why does it feel like I know you?” He asked when she reached to touch his face. “Maybe I remind you of my sister.” Raine sniggered. He shook his head and flinched a bit when he felt sparks running across his skin. “You were in my head.” She arched an eyebrow. “I’m a telepath.” She told him and stood back up. There’s got to more to this. The connection he felt between them was as if he personally knew her. He stood up too and looked around the room. His eyes landed on her, slipping her swords back into their sheaths that was positioned on her back. “We need to find, Terrence.” He said to her and Raine. “One thing at a time, detective.” The person said, crouching down and pulling out a phone from the big man’s pocket that Raine killed. “Their next victim is Kendrick’s.” She told him, pushing to her feet and handing him the phone. “He survived the attack?” She nodded. “I had to make sure he did.” He frowned at her. “Why the concern?” He questioned. “He knows something that can help you solve this case but I have other things to solve.” She looked at her sister who shared a look with her. “Who are you?” He then asked. She faced him. “Kayla Atarneae.”
