"Lock the door."
"I'm on my period." I said almost immediately without even thinking.
"Not everything is about sex.. what do you take me for?" He added. "Lock the door!"
I did as I was told.
I did not know what to expect. I was afraid this was all just a trick, he was literally playing mind games with me.
"Come here." He held his hand out for me. At this point I was shaking, I did not know what he expected of me. I was literally astound when I held his hand and he pulled me into a... hug. I was confused, I expected him to give me backhand clap or anything of that sort but he didn't.
"I missed the way you smell. The way you smile, the way you make feel. I just really missed you.." He whispered in my ear holding me really tightly. I didn't hug him back, I just stood there surprised.
"Are you drunk?" I asked him, he pulled back and gave me a heartwarming smile.
"I couldn't be sober enough to stomach you being out there with him.. alone."
That just confirmed it.
"You have to stop drinking.."
"I can not." He pulled a small liquor bottle from the pocket inside of his posh blazer.
"You're being ridiculous, stop." I told him. "I don't think Lady Tracy or Liam will appreciate seeing you like this."
He simply rolled his eyes and laid back of my single bed. He motioned for me to join him. I was conflicted, I really wanted to be in his arms.
"When I drink.. I surprisingly get the courage to say and do the things, I want to." He said gruffly. I removed my shoes and went to lie with him. He held me close, his chest was moving up and down. I loved his manly scent. His rigid chest made me feel so at home and—
No.
"I don't like the way you treat me." I finally let out.
"I don't like it either." He added.
"Then why do you do it?"
"I'm ashamed, I just make things worse—" he suddenly stopped when we entwined our hands and he felt something. My heart sank. "What's that?"
"A ring.." I replied.
"More like scrap molded into a ring." He scoffed.
"I like it a lot."
"You my dear, are really cheap maintenance. If I buy you a better ring will you ditch him?"
"What?" I said raising my head to look at him. He only rolled his eyes. "Don't act surprised!"
"Why would you want to buy me a ring?"
".. it was merely a question more of a banter." He replied and I nodded going back to laying my head on his chest. He held me so securely.
"I think there will abolish slavery soon." He said.
"Really?!"
"Talks of parliament recently. I doubt anything will change still. They will most probably remove the slavery law but the prejudices remain and of course they will still remain on top of the food chain." He sounded so smart, whenever he talked like this, I just looked at his jaw line and the way it moved. How easily a dimple could form just by him frowning a little bit. His perfect white straight teeth that left me breathless when he smiled. I did not know why he kissed me or continued kissing me. My teeth weren't exactly the brightest white smile more like a line of corn. "Father will go mad.." I heard him say. Had I really zoned out when he started talking about things, I did not quite understand? Maybe.
"What will you do?" I asked him.
"I will make you pregnant, in due time."
This made me... feel weird.
"I'm not your wife!"
"I'm tired of wishing things were different. So do you fancy him then?"
I knew exactly what he was asking but I couldn't answer him.
"A tad bit."
"Of course you fancy him." He rolled his eyes. "The boy practically licks the back of your ears. Pathetic, if you asked me!"
"He is really nice." I defended.
"Such a shame, he will never have you.."
"I'm going to marry him."
"Over my dead body you will not!"
"You cannot order me around!" I yelled.
"I actually I can, darling. I always do."
"This is why I hate you."
"Do we have to go through this all the time? Sure tell yourself you hate me."
"Do we always have to go through this drunk phase of yours constantly then you go back to treating me heinously? It's a cycle and I'm tired of it. I'm not your wife, I will not baby you. I cannot be taking care of junior William and Senior William. I much prefer Liam, he is a sweet little Angel and you're a monster!"
It was silent.
I could feel him breathing.
"... I'm sorry.."
"You're not. If you are not sorry then let's see how you will treat me tomorrow.."
"I can't exactly treat you like a princess, do have any idea, how badly this makes me look?"
"You care about what other people think?"
"No, Panashe. I care about you and your safety. I'd rather be the one doing the things I do to you than anyone else. It hurts me but I can't fathom the thought of anyone else doing that to you. I know how bad it can be.. you and I know where it could lead.."
It was true.
I'd much rather be beaten by him, he somewhat took it easy on me. I had seen worse back at the ranch. People died—
"What do you do?" I changed the subject. "Do you keep slaves like your father and wait for them to breed so you can make money."
"No.. I'm nothing like my father."
"I beg to differ." I said not knowing where I was getting confidence to treat him like this.
"I'm a doctor, I do house calls and so on."
What?!
"You are such a liar. I have never heard that not even from the ranch and people talk a lot."
"My father is big on land and slave trades. I occasionally travel with him and help out with book keeping but that's not me. He is well aware of it but rarely acknowledges it. He wants me to do more of the Gallagher family business. The slave trade. I went to the University of St Andrews (established 1410–1413). I studied medicine and yes I'm a doctor."
I cleared my throat. "Well good for you."
"Good for us because I get to deliver our child." I immediately rolled my eyes.
"What is your obsession with making me pregnant? Your wife is practically begging for a second child.."
"You're so ignorant."
"I'm not."
"Did you not just hear what I said? If you get pregnant, by law the child takes after my status and you're allowed to see your child. Which means we get to be together to some certain extent. Of course I will take backlash from my family and friends and everyone but that's a risk, I'm willing to to take. Besides.. have you seen Mary. I bet we could make a better looking baby than Durham. Just look at those golden brown eyes and that smile.. I'd die for my child to inherit everything you have."
He had never ever complimented me.
"Are you still fuddled?"
"I reckon by now, I'm as sober as can be."
"So you like pretending as if you do not remember the things that happen when you're intoxicated.. and practically blame me for taking advantage of you?"
"I knew you had a smart mouth."
"It's not funny."
"It is because you actually believed it."
"No, it's pathetic and frankly you're not man enough for me."
"And Elliot is?"
"Yes, he works hard for everything he has. He doesn't take advantage of a situation. You can be comfortable around him and you're allowed to say anything. He is man enough because he isn't afraid to tell me he loves me constantly."
".. I think I better get going." He abruptly stood up. Walking away from me.
"Don't ever return!" I told him.
"I'm not ready for what you're asking of me."
"But you're ready to take me to bed every single night... how is that logical?"
"William!!" I yelled his name for the first time. He turned back, marched towards me and slammed me against the wall. My back actually kind of hurt. It was soothed as soon as his lips touched mine. I softened, allowing him to move in synch with me. His tongue wrestled with mine for control but he won. He always won, I was getting better at this as I pulled his hair. He greedily growled and bit on my lip. He pulled back and said..
"Elliot's Kiss must have really revolted you, deep down you know it."
With that he walked away.
That's when I realized he must have followed us or something. I tried really hard to like it, to like Elliot's Kiss but the truth of the matter is.. he was a really sweet person but I much preferred my sour William who brought me to the brink of ecstasy.
Perhaps we always yearn for what we cannot have and this was our situation.
William and I.
