Chapter 5: Derrick

966 Words
I don’t know why I am nervous.  It’s not like this is the first time I have been at an Elder’s Council meeting. Granted I was patrolling instead of actually being given an assignment.  Maybe I am still just jittery overseeing Jasper before coming here. When I walked in I was expecting him to be comatose like the last time I went to see him but he wasn’t. This time he was alert and eating. He had lost so much weight and muscle mass since he had left our lands to go to the dragon lands to be their ambassador. Melina, daughter of Elder Jarvis and he were representing our species on the Dragon lands. Then somehow he got kidnapped along with the fairy ambassador. They were kidnapped by rogue dragons and rogue witches.  During captivity, he was given a potion of some sort of an incantation that was made on him. At least those are two of the options that explain the behaviors that he is showing.  He believes that any female that feeds him is his mate.  Vampires find their mates through the taste of their blood.  I am told that when the first drop of your mate’s blood touches your taste buds, anyone else’s blood will taste like sour milk afterward. Your mate’s blood will be the only one you will ever desire. Many describe it as pure ambrosia, food of the gods. Every time I drink from a female, I have been hoping I would taste it. That ambrosia that everyone keeps talking about. I have yet to taste it. My thoughts are that my mate will automatically fall in love with her and all these crazy feelings I have been having will go away. I can finally feel normal.  Feel like everyone else. This incantation that Jasper is under makes him crazy with jealousy when the female leaves him. He is better when he doesn’t drink blood.  Although he is getting weaker as the days progress. He eats very little food and has refused to drink blood.  He doesn’t want to hurt the female donor.  Jasper and I were very good friends growing up. When we both joined the Elite Guard our friendship continued. His freezing power worked like mine in the sense that it could only be done on one-to-one combat.  We both knew we needed to nurture our fighting abilities as well as our gifts when other guards focused on nurturing their gifts only. Jasper was like a brother to me. I needed to help him. That’s why when Lieutenant Demetrio asked for a volunteer to join the team to find a cure for Jasper, in his absence, I jumped right on it. I needed to help my brother.   Today I will be meeting the Dragon, Fairy, and Witch who will be working with me.  An interspecies team was thought of because of all the magic entailed and the diplomacy involved.   I don’t care who I am paired up with, I just need to find a cure. My man, Jasper is running out of time. He asked me again today. I couldn’t believe when he asked me the first time and now that he has asked again, I know the contingency plan he has in his head, he intends to stick with it.  I run his words through my head again, “End me, Derrick. I can’t live like this anymore.” Those words filled my veins with ice.  I told him, “We will find the cure to help you, Jaz. On my life, I will save you. Just hold on.” And I intend to keep my vow to him.  I am currently waiting outside the Main Hall’s doors, waiting to be summoned inside for the meeting.  “Hello,” says a female voice next to me.  I jump, startled by her sudden appearance.  The short, thin, brown-haired witch laughs. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you,” she says.  “No. I’m sorry. I just didn’t see you,” I say to her. “My name is Derrick.”  I stick my hand out and she takes it and shakes it. “Nice to meet you, Derrick. My name is Wendy. I believe we will be working together,” she says with a seductive smile. Oh, crap. I complain internally. I would like to say, ‘It’s just a pretty face’ but I don’t and just smile. “Are you the witch assigned to the task team to help Jasper?” I ask her. “Yes, I am your witchy teammate. The Magical Ministry assigned me,” she says with a giggle. “Glad to have you on board,” I lie. Not that I am not grateful, because we can use all the help we can get. But, I wish she wasn’t so flirtatious. Maybe as soon as the vampire and fairy get here, she might latch on to one of them and forget about me.  I can only hope. She converses more about frivolous things and topics. I just nod or give a wow or hmm when I think it calls for it. I really hope the others get here soon and we can get moving.  The witch is making me antsy. By the grace of the Blood Goddess, Kenny the Guard standing at the door summons us, “The council will see you now.” he says. “I don’t believe we are all here,” I say to him. “Waiting for us?” says a familiar voice behind me. No way, I say to myself. I turn slowly and my suspicion is confirmed.  There stands my wet dream. The male Fairy that makes me hard every time I think of him. The one that even now, makes my hormones crazy.  “Sorry we are late,” the male fairy apologizes to Kenny. “Not late at all, just on time Sir,” Kenny says and opens the door for us to go in. “None of that Sir stuff. Just call me Rob,” the Fairy says. So that’s his name. Rob. Rob gives me a wink and then walks through the open doors.  Is it just me, or did his voice sound kind of...what's the word for it...musical?
