The gamma’s son

1243 Words
Selena POV I squealed as soon as my bedroom door closed behind me. This was my chance, my opportunity to prove myself to everybody. I knew I was seen as the spoilt little princess, but I had more to me than just that. I wasn’t just the pitiful, pampered child that everyone assumed me to be. I had been training hard recently and I was certain this mission would allow me to demonstrate my true worth. Ever since Sage had gained his ability, I seemed to be his main target of attack. I wanted to be able to defend myself in some way, I may not be able to defend myself against his telekinesis, but I wanted to at least be capable of defeating him in one to one combat. That was when I went to Lincoln, he was our gamma, Terry’s son and due to be the kingdom’s next head warrior, he was also known to be the pack’s number one trainer. Even as the son of a higher ranked wolf, his speed and strength was incredible, he was the only wolf that Forrest could fight fairly. We all knew his story, when he turned thirteen he waited for the emergence of his wolf, but nothing stirred within him. After a week of nonappearance, everyone fretted that his beast had died or for some reason he hadn’t been gifted with one at all, but uncle Gray refused those theories. Uncle Gray could feel a connection to Lincoln’s wolf, meaning he was in there somewhere, just lying dormant. After an entire year of absence, uncle Gray had tried almost everything, summoning the wolf using his fatherly command, attempting to coax him out with a one sided, internal conversation. They asked me to lay my hands on him to aid the recovery of his wolf, but after an hour I told them, neither of them had been physically injured, I couldn’t heal what was not broken, my power of healing was not what was needed in this case. Even my mother and aunt Calli had attempted to see what the reason for the animal’s shyness was, but still only silence was heard. My uncle had exhausted every possible option, apart from one. It was a risky idea, but it was the only thing he could think of that may help Lincoln’s predicament. Lincoln had grown depressed, because a werewolf with no wolf is a simple human, and humans couldn’t live within our community, if he didn’t receive his wolf soon he would have to leave his pack and his family. Something drastic had to be done. Uncle Gray prepared everyone for what was to come, the method could be the answer to everyone’s prayers or it could turn out to be a catastrophic mistake. I was only nine when it all happened, but I still remember the adults that day, walking around the palace with solemn faces, I could hear Lincoln’s mother, Jackie’s sobs and the comforting words that Terry directed to his mate.     Luckily everything worked out for the best, although not quite how anyone expected. Uncle Gray had attempted to call to the wolf with the same method that he had created the werewolf species, through a bite. Some of his life essence flowed through Lincoln’s body, until it reached his wolf, giving him the kick start he needed. None of us children were in the room when it happened, but I will never forget the almighty howl that shook the palace’s walls that day. Lincoln’s wolf had been awoken, but he was no longer an average wolf. Lincoln’s wolf, Jet had always been there, in the back of his mind. He had the typical excelled strength, speed and stamina of a wolf, but now, uncle Gray had passed on some of his own. The first time I saw Jet, I was awestruck. He was twice the size of any ranked wolf, his chocolatey brown coat had highlights of red glimmering in the sunlight. One of his eyes was black, whereas the other gleamed a bright blue colour. He was emitting an aura, even stronger than an alpha’s. Jet not only had his own attributes, but uncle Gray had inadvertently passed on some of his immense energy to him, making him stronger than even uncle Lycus.   “Come on you’re going to have to hit me harder than that, little girl!” Lincoln goaded me, smirking. We were hidden away in a quiet glade, rather than in the pack’s training grounds, I didn’t want anyone to see me training, or laugh at the amount of times I got my arse handed to me, but I needed to improve drastically. For years I had avoided training, the thought of getting sweaty and dirty in front of everyone put me off the idea of physical exercise. The truth was, until three months ago, I hadn’t even stepped foot inside a gym, let alone worked on my self-defence techniques, which is why I needed so much help now. Luckily, Lincoln took pity on me and agreed to train me privately, as long as I took the classes seriously. And after seeing him topless, I promised myself I would devote all of my attention to his coaching. “So why aren’t you coming with us again?” I aimed a kick at his ribs, but he moved faster than the average wolf and dodged my attack. “Hey not fair!” “You’ll be taking half of the kingdom’s warriors with you, someone needs to stay behind and protect the pack itself.” He said, ducking my pathetic shot towards his face. “But if we took you, we wouldn’t need half as many warriors.” I said, collapsing onto the ground, breathlessly. “Aww, are you going to miss me princess?” He said with a smirk, running his fingers through his thick blonde hair, his baby blue eyes twinkling in the sunlight.  Would I miss the sight before me? Heck yes! “Eugh, don’t be stupid. I just think it will be less conspicuous if we were able to leave behind half of the warriors.” I said, trying not to make it obvious that I was checking out his bulging muscles and well-toned body. “Well, I just do what uncle Lycus tells me, so if he wants me here, then I stay here.” He shrugged, before turning and walking away, leaving me sprawled out on the hard ground.   As soon as I walked into my bedroom, I noticed the plain black rucksack propped up against the headboard of my bed. I looked closer at the note that was lying next to it, picking it up and reading the tick list of essential items needed for our journey.   1 spare change of black clothing Black baseball cap Toothbrush and paste Hairbrush and hair ties 2 bars of soap Reusable food tin and cutlery Reusable water bottle   You will only have this one backpack, so only essentials may be taken with you. We will be leaving at 07:00hrs tomorrow morning Make sure you are prepared to leave one hour before.   I rolled my eyes with a groan, I wondered if my brothers had received school like checklists or if it were just me that could not be trusted in packing her own bag to travel with. I know full well, that none of the warriors attending would receive one of these ridiculous lists.
