My hand moved on its own, fueled by the anger of my inner wolf, and before I realized it, my palm slapped Sarah’s cheek in a swift, reflexive strike. The slap echoed in the room, a sharp crack that seemed to freeze time.
I hadn’t meant to lose control, but there it was—my anger laid bare for all to see.
Sarah’s head jerked to the side, her expression one of shock and momentary vulnerability. A faint pink mark began to bloom on her cheek where my hand had struck, a proof of my wrath.
My heart pounded in my chest, my hands trembling with the adrenaline of what I’d done. Suddenly, the mere thought of Alpha Kevin finding out that I had lost my composure, and recklessly made a scene over someone like Sarah, filled me with dread.
"Amira!" The nightmare I dreaded came to reality as his voice cut through the air like a whip, commanding and furious.
My heart sank as I recognized the only person who could call me like that—Alpha Kevin. And he hadd seen everything. Despite my silent hope for him to not to see what I did, I didn’t realized that he had seen my outburst, and now there would be no escaping the consequences.
Alpha Kevin’s long strides brought him swiftly to us, his presence looming as he stopped before us. I watched in stunned disbelief as he walked passed me, his attention focused entirely on Sarah. He reached out to her, his concern was so genuine as he checked the mark I’d left.
My chest quickly tightened with humiliation and betrayal as he comforted her right before my very eyes.
“What is the meaning of this, my Alpha?” I forced the words out, my voice trembling. Even though the scene before me spoke volumes, I needed to hear it directly from his own mouth.
I needed to understand why he would console another woman over his own mate. Why he would choose Sarah over me, even in this moment.
Alpha Kevin finally turned to face me, his eyes—once warm and inviting—were now cold and filled with disdain. Those set of golden brown eyes that had once made me believe I was his mate now looked at me as though I were nothing more than a nuisance.
When had he started seeing me like this? Had he always felt this way, and I had just been too blind to notice?
“What have you done now, Amira?” His voice was sharp, dripping with frustration. “I told you to behave, to keep your role in attending our guests. But instead, you disgrace yourself and me by attacking our guest.” His rebuke was harsh, delivered in front of everyone, and I could feel the weight of every gaze in the room on me.
Some looked on with pity, others with thinly veiled shock, but all of them witnessed how the alpha, my own mate, humiliated me.
My fists clenched at my sides, my inner wolf screaming to defend myself burned within me.
“Say something, Luna Amira. You’re his Luna. He shouldn’t be doing this.”
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I’d dare to speak back to Alpha Kevin, but the injustice of the situation was too much to bear. “I was only defending myself,” I snapped, my voice laced with the anger that had been building for so long. “She provoked me, my Alpha. She’s the one who—”
But before I could finish, Sarah let out a pitiful sob, burying her face in my mate’s chest. I watched in horror as she played the victim, her fake tears soaking into his shirt as she clung to him for comfort. Then she glanced up at me, a fleeting smirk curling her lips—a silent message of her victory.
“You lying snake!” I lunged at her, my fingers tangling in her blonde hair as I yanked her back from Alpha Kevin.
I didn’t care that Kevin was trying to pull me off her, nor would I bother that my mind was clouded with rage. All I knew was that I couldn’t let her win as well letting her get away with this.
“Enough, Amira!” Alpha Kevin’s voice boomed, but I was beyond reason.
The sight of him protecting her only fueled my anger and made me lash out even harder. I struck her again and again, driven by the fury that consumed me.
“Beta Dennis, get in here!” Alpha Kevin shouted, and in moments, Beta Dennis appeared, pulling me away from Sarah. I struggled against him, but Alpha Kevin’s hold on Sarah, the way he tenderly stroked her face as she whimpered, sapped the fight out of me.
“How could you betray me like this, my Alpha?” I screamed, my voice breaking with the weight of my pain. “How could you comfort her over me, your own mate?”
But Alpha Kevin’s eyes didn’t soften; they remained cold, distant. He held Sarah close, as if my words had no effect on him at all. And then, Sarah—playing the part of the fake victim—lifted her head to speak.
“Have you no shame, Amira?” she hissed, her voice laced with venom as she dared not to even address me as Luna either. “After all our Alpha has done for you, this is how you repay him?”
Her words cut like a knife to my heart, and I was too stunned to respond. She continued, her lies spilling out with ease.
“You accuse our Alpha of betrayal when you, yourself, are the one who cheated on him instead,” she said, her voice dripping with false innocence. “You think you’re so high because youre his mate and Luna, but you’re playing so dirty behind our Alpha’s back by seeing another man, haven’t you?”
“What nonsense are you spewing now?” I shot back, my anger rekindling. “How dare you make such accusations without a shred of proof!”
Sarah merely smirked, reaching into her purse. “Oh, but I do have proof,” she purred, pulling out a photograph. “Here.”
“Sarah, you know that drawing out false accusations against our Luna without the validity of this proof could sanction you into a harsh punishment by our Alpha,” Beta Dennis said.
“I am ready for it.” Sarah bravely replied which left me more confused what could she be up to and whatever the hell was she even talking about.
Beta Dennis made to take it, but Alpha Kevin was much faster in snatching the picture from Sarah’s hand. His eyes scanned it quickly, and as he did, his expression darkened into something terrifying—something I had never seen before.
Alpha Kevin, the ruthless and unforgiving, looked at me with a fury that chilled me to the bone.
“What is it?” I whispered, reaching out to see the photo for myself. But as Alpha Kevin let it drop to the floor, I caught a glimpse—and the world tilted beneath me. There, in stark black and white, was an image of me kissing a man I didn’t recognize.
“This can’t be true, my alpha,” I begged, tears streaming down my face. “I don’t know anything about this photo. It’s not what it looks like!” I tried to go to him, to wrap my arms around him, but he shoved me away so hard that I fell to the floor.
“Don’t you dare touch me,” he snarled, his voice low and venomous. “You disgust me.”
“How can you not believe me?” I cried, desperate. “Would you really trust her lies over your own luna? Your own mate?”
But Alpha Kevin’s face twisted with contempt. “The picture speaks for itself, Amira,” he said, his voice ice-cold. “Maybe that’s why you haven’t been able to give me an heir—because you never wanted one from me. I should have known better. After all, our marriage was just a transaction, a way to settle your father’s debts.”
His words cut deeper than any blade, and I felt the ground fall away beneath me. Never had he thrown that in my face—not until now.
“You’ve never had any mercy in me, have you?” I whispered, my voice hollow.
“Mercy?” he sneered. “After everything I’ve done for you, you dare talk about Mercy? I have been merciful from the moment I imprint on you and made you my Luna at the expense of not knowing you’re barren. But since you dare to speak ill of me despite that, very well, Amira. Let me show you just how merciless I can be instead.”
“What do you mean, my alpha?”
A chill ran down my spine at the threat in his voice. What was he going to do?
The uncertainty filled me with dread, but nothing could have prepared me for his next words.
“Gather your things and leave,” he commanded, his tone final and unyielding. “From this moment on, I don’t want to see your face here ever again. Because I, Alpha Kevin Fosner of the Windcrown Pack, reject you, Amira Clarke, as my Luna and my mate.”
