The sight of that wretched woman clinging to my mate like a leech sent a chill down my spine, freezing me in place at the entrance.
I watched in silence as Sarah brazenly flaunted herself, her fingers brushing against Alpha Kevin’s arm with such malice that made my stomach churn. She knew I was there, and she knew I was watching. Yet she still carried on, her every move a deliberate threat that screamed of her shameless audacity.
And although this wasn’t the first time I’d encountered her boldness, it certainly wouldn’t be the last.
“That b***h is here again, and she looked so clingy around our mate, Luna Amira. Do something.” Told by my inner wolf, Dakota.
“I know, but I swore that I would behave as that is what Alpha Kevin wants me to do. Besides, she could just be close to him like most of Alpha Kevin’s friends.” I lied.
“Suite yourself. But I am not warning you, Luna Amira, not just out of mere hunch. My primal instinct is too strong. I know when to sense how another shewolf is trying to seduce our mate.” Dakota was so persistent that I had to ignore her thoughts inside me.
The walls of the Windcrown Pack house could lock me up and prevent me from seeing the world so casually, but they couldn’t silence the whispers of Alpha Kevin’s cheating that found their way to me. And among those rumors, Sarah’s name was always the one that cut the deepest, the loudest echo of my mate’s betrayal.
Sarah wasn’t just any typical mistress in Alpha Kevin’s life, though. She was his past—his first love, the woman who had known him before the world had shaped him into the cold, calculating man I had married.
Long before I was forced into becoming Alpha Kevin’s mate—an unwilling bride traded for my father’s debt to the Fosners—Sarah had been Alpha Kevin’s lover, his childhood sweetheart. They were supposed to get married, as most people believed.
Actually, even years after our marriage, I could still feel the lingering doubt in the eyes of those who watched us, the unspoken question that says, ‘Why didn’t he marry Sarah? Why me instead? Why a woman like me who can't even produce him an heir?’
But it wasn’t Alpha Kevin’s choice that led him to me. It was the decision of both our families. A cruel twist of debt forced me to become his mate as part of his inheritance of becoming the Alpha of the Windcrown Pack.
Alpha Kevin had no choice but to marry me, to seal our bond in a union devoid of affection, a marriage of duty rather than desire. In his heart, he had been forced to leave behind the woman he truly loved, and I was left to endure the consequences of that decision every day.
Being Alpha Kevin’s Luna was a role I had never imagined for myself either, yet it was one I was forced to play with grace, even as it tore me apart inside. Even the nights in our marital bed were a constant reminder of what I could never be. When Alpha Kevin touched me, it was with a distant tenderness, if not rough, when he’s drunk that only made the ache in my heart grow.
His kisses, either harsh or soft, carried the weight of unspoken regrets, and in those moments, I knew—he wasn’t kissing me, not at all. His mind was elsewhere, with Sarah. Every time he held me, every time our bodies intertwined, I felt the shadow of Sarah’s presence between us, an invisible barrier that I could never cross.
He longed for her, even as he lay beside me. But I wasn’t Sarah, and I could never be her.
As I approached them, Dennis, Kevin’s beta, called my name, offering me a glass of wine, which I accepted. But before I could take a sip, Sarah’s voice cut through the air, dripping with mock concern. “Oh, Beta Dennis, shouldn’t you be careful offering our Luna wine? I mean, our Luna could be pregnant by the alpha’s heir, and it wouldn’t be right for her to drink that, right? After all, isn’t it about time for her to have a pup already?”
Sarah had appeared so suddenly before me that I hadn’t even noticed her move. One moment, she was glued to my mate; the next, she was here, ready to needle me.
“Sarah,” I responded, forcing a smile, “I wasn’t aware that managing my diet was part of your duties.” I tried to sound confident, reminding myself that I was the Luna of the Windcrown Pack. Sarah was nothing but a nuisance, a shewolf desperate to take away my position and my mate’s attention.
But she wasn’t done. “Why, it would be my pleasure to serve our Luna,” she replied with a smirk, glancing at Kevin before adding, “and the Alpha, of course.”
Her blatant disrespect made my blood boil. My hands trembled as I fought the wolf inside me that wanted to slap her smug face. Sarah stood there, smug and victorious, knowing she had succeeded in getting under my skin. I despised her, with her perfect milky-white skin and her pitiful blue eyes that made my blood run hot.
But I couldn’t cause a scene, not tonight. Alpha Kevin had worked too hard to ensure the success of this festival. The least I could do was avoid any public humiliation that could ruin the evening.
I struggled to maintain my composure as Beta Dennis took the wine glass from my hand. “I think I’ll take this for now, Luna Amira. I’ll ask the waiters to give you non-alcoholic refreshments instead.”
Beta Dennis was only trying to help, concerned by Sarah’s comments about pregnancy. But I knew she wasn’t genuinely concerned—she just wanted to get under my skin. She likely knew I wasn’t pregnant and was having trouble conceiving. Alpha Kevin must have told her. After all, she was rumored to be his mistress.
“It’s fine, I’m not really thirsty,” I assured Beta Dennis with a smile, not wanting him to feel bad. He left with a satisfied expression, heading back to the table where Kevin sat with the other gentlemen.
I decided to ignore Sarah and join Alpha Kevin instead. But just as I turned to leave, Sarah’s voice stopped me in my tracks. “Don’t you have any cravings, my Luna?” she asked, her tone dripping with false sweetness.
“Luna Amira, don’t let her keep doing this to you. You are the Luna of this pack, and you must stand your ground.” The inner voice of Dakota within fueled me.
I didn’t want to engage with her any longer, but something in me refused to let her have the last word. I tilted my head and looked back at her. “Why do you even care?”
She only smiled, a knowing smile that sent chills down my spine. I could tell she was up to something, but it didn’t matter. If she caused any trouble tonight, it would be on her to answer to Alpha Kevin.
Sarah took a few steps closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. “Well, I was just wondering, shouldn’t you be pregnant by now? That is, if you’re even capable of getting pregnant.”
There it was—the real reason behind her taunts. She believed I was barren, unable to give Alpha Kevin an heir. She clung to him because she thought she still had a chance—that she could replace me as Luna of the pack once Alpha Kevin rejected me for being barren.
“What did you just say?” My voice rose, demanding respect, asserting my position as the pack’s Luna. But Sarah wasn’t intimidated. In fact, she seemed to enjoy provoking me.
“What’s the matter, Luna Amira? Did I say something wrong?” Sarah sneered. “What’s with that face? What’s so wrong about telling the truth? I mean, isn’t it true anyway that you’re barren and will soon be rejected by Alpha Kevin for being unable to give him an heir?”
She then leaned in closer, her voice a venomous whisper. “And when that time comes, I’ll be around to take back what was supposed to be mine.”
