Chapter 5

Tomorrow…and Adler was determined to find his little foxy witch and get her to explain a few things… Yes, his foxy witch. By the time he had got back to the house he was in a very bad mood and even Trey had backed off asking him any questions until much later in the evening. After explaining what he had witnessed Trey had quietly sulked with him, explaining how the Silva brothers and their gang of rag tag foxes had become quite infamous around town for their protective type antics, racketeering and money collecting for the towns more business savvy foxes like the Renaud Family that basically owned the town, Mr Renaud being the town mayor’s main lawyer and business partner. God only knew just how corrupt the town really was, but all the while super naturals had a safe environment to study in, no one was likely to complain. . Adler felt like he was losing his mind. He was sitting in the main cafeteria having lunch, but his mind and his eyes had been constantly searching for Jesse all day, his wolf practically pacing in his head with agitation. “Did she not come to school today?” He muttered between mouthfuls mostly to himself but Trey shrugged as he scoffed his food. Colton sat down with his tray of food, hearing Adler and seeing his agitation. “Who are you looking for?” “Jesse Oslan…” Colton frowned. “Is that the transfer chick…from yesterday?” “Yeah, you seen her around today anywhere, I really need to talk to her about something.” Adler asked, trying to sound nonchalant, but not really succeeding, he was still quite wound up about last night and his wolf would not rest. “Can’t say I have…can’t say I ever really do…” Colton leaned over the table with a sly smirk. “So she is your mate then? I thought Trey was trying to f*ck her?” Adler growled deep in his throat, his top lip twitching up on one side. Colton lowered his head in deference to the stronger Alpha. “Sorry…I didn’t mean…” “Have you told your parents yet?” Maxim asked from where he was seated next to Trey on the opposite side of the table. Adler grimaced. “No…so no one is to say anything to anyone…she’s not even twenty yet so it’s not like I can reject her anyway…” “Reject her? You do realise how rare it is to even have a fated mate these days, yeah?” Colton asked with a concerned frown. “Yeah, of course I do, but it’s not like she’s a wolf…no way my father is going to allow a fox witch hybrid into the family.” “So what? You’re going to play with her a bit?” Colton asked tensely. Trey looked up under his brows at Adler as he continued to eat and listened, a strange intense look in his eyes. Adler smirked and stabbed his fork into his pasta. “I got her number last night, but she isn’t picking up…” “Playing hard to get…Trey knows all about that when it comes to Jesse Oslan.” Maxim chuckled. Trey elbowed him in the side and put him in a head lock, dragging his head down into his lap as Maxim begged for mercy while laughing like a loon. Adler looked at Trey with a dark scowl. “You didn’t get there with her, did you?” Trey stopped choking Maxim and let him sit up as he levelled his gaze at Adler. “Nah, that one is locked down tighter than a bank vault. Nasty mouth on her too…sweet ass though…” He grinned, his tongue lolling out of his mouth. “I did fully intend to start bullying her myself this semester…buutttt…” He drawled out the last word and looked Adler in the eye. Adler growled softly as his wolf reacted. Trey pointed at him and smirked. “Yeah…that’s why…I submit to you, she’s all yours Alpha…I’ll help you to snag your mate.” Adler nodded and shovelled a fork full of food into his mouth chewing on it while thinking. He was so confused as to what to do…he was losing his resolve to reject her already and he hadn’t even spent any time with her yet. It seemed both his wolf and the beast within were more than ready to accept their mate and that just made him worry about what would happen when his father did find out. “Has anyone seen her?” He asked once his mouth was empty. Did she really not come to classes today because of what happened last night? Colton stood up, holding up a finger. “One sec…” Adler, Trey and Maxim watched him as he walked over to a far table and sat down next to a girl with a short blond bob with an elastic headband holding it back from her face. “Who’s that?” Adler asked. Trey shrugged and continued eating. Maxim rolled his eyes. “Bethany…real nerd, on the chess team. Colton loves his nerds…” Trey chuckled. “He says they are wild in the sack once they get over their prudishness…” They watched as Colton swaggered back. They could all see the scorching blush on Bethany’s cheeks even from this distance as she watched him walk away, her eyes wide and expectant. “Looks like he has definitely snagged another one…” Trey said with a grumble like he was losing some sort of competition. “Between him and you I wouldn’t be surprised if there were no virgins left in this entire university by the end of graduation.” “We aim to achieve!” Trey said, loosely quoting the college motto. They all laughed loudly. Colton sat down. “What’s so funny?” “Nothing…” Adler shook his head. “What did she say?” “Jesse is definitely here…somewhere, Bethany confirmed she was in Media studies with her and her friend said she saw her in the art faculty earlier today.” Adler’s eyes darkened. “So she’s ghosting me…” Trey chuckled. Adler looked up at him, annoyed. “What the f**k is so funny? You were chuckling away to yourself last night too!” Trey held his hands up in mock surrender. “Just been there, man…been there…she’s elusive.” “Like a fox…” Maxim said laughing. They all chuckled at the old adage, except Adler. He stabbed his food and ate in brooding silence. . He searched for her, going to the office and asking for Jesse’s class timetable. They were hesitant to give it to him and only ended up giving him her classes for the rest of that day…which was only two more…and not a help as she didn’t show up to them. So where the hell was she? He was starting to get worried, his wolf stirring his anxiety to make sure after last night that his mate was actually alright and hadn’t been hurt by the male foxes. . . Jesse had been walking down the hall heading towards her next class when Bethany had stopped her. Jesse was surprised and saw how nervous Bethany seemed to be. She was a nerd, quiet and reserved usually, a pretty and petite girl, but fashionable, and human… “Ah…can I help you?” Jesse asked as Bethany grabbed the tails of Jesse’s plaid shirt that she had tied around her waist as she had walked past her. Bethany let go and looked at Jesse, her eyes going wide to see how perfect Jesse was in the looks department as Jesse’s deep green eyes focused on her. Bethany felt a pang of hopelessness and jealousy. “Um…I…well…I…” She stammered with nervousness, she had never done anything like this before. Jesse rolled her eyes and folded her arms. She didn’t have time for this. “Spit it out, we’ll be late for class.” “Do you have something going with Colton?” She asked, her timid voice trying to sound tough and challenging. Jesse startled and laughed. “Colton? Colton…” She tried to think. “Adler’s friend? On the football team?” “Yes…that Colton…” Bethany had the gall to put her hands on her hips and try to stare Jesse down. “No, why do you ask? I’ve never even spoken to the guy?” Jesse narrowed her eyes suspiciously. What the hell was going on with the werewolves concerning themselves with her these days? “He was asking about you at lunch…in the caff…” Jesse’s eyes widened as she realised what was happening. “Son of a b!tch!” She knew it wasn’t Colton asking…it was for Adler…damn him! She turned and stalked off, heading home. “F*ck this sh!t…I’m outta here!” Jesse growled at a startled Bethany. “So…you and Colton?” Bethany called out. “No!” Jesse’s voice came back through the now empty halls. Jesse wondered if Adler would be even more stalky than Trey…would he really go to my classes and wait for me…or am I just being paranoid…he had got his friend to ask people about my whereabouts…is he trying to find me? Jesse took her phone out and looked at the five missed calls and ten unopened messages. “Sh!t…” She breathed. She looked up at the ceiling. “Do you hate me?” She called out to no particular god, but all of them. “Am I cursed now? What the hell is going on?” She saw movement outside the window and saw it was a dean. She scuttled away, heading for another building entrance. One thing about this private university was they were strict on attendance and once within grounds students were expected to stay, attend classes and not loiter. Jesse wasn’t going to wait around and find out if Adler was crazy enough to stalk her classes, she already knew the answer…he would be pissed off she hadn’t answered his messages and calls, so of course he was stalking her classes…his promised bullying had begun.
