After dinner, Catherine returned to the living room. She was preparing to leave when one of the servants came in. He looked at Leonard's Grandfather and said, "Master, Miss Vivian Green has just arrived to see you."
When Catherine heard Vivian's name, her face turned white, and her hands clenched tightly. Vivian was the woman that had killed her unborn baby.
Vivian walked into the living room and handed her bag to one of the servants. She looked at the old man and said, "Grandpa Campbell, I heard that you were not well, and I came to see you as soon as I could." She pointed to the bag. "And I brought Leonard a gift!"
Catherine froze when she heard Vivian's voice. She would have assumed that Vivian would have been coming to see Leonard, not Leonard's Grandfather.
When Vivian saw Catherine, she smiled and said, "Gee, Catherine, I didn't expect to see you here. What a surprise! Long time, no see."
Vivian was talking to Catherine as if they were the best friends of, and that they were being reunited after a long absence, but Catherine had no interest in playing the other woman's games. She grabbed her purse and turned to Leonard's Grandfather. Before she could say goodbye to him, though, Vivian said, "Catherine, we haven't seen each other for a long time. What have you been up to? Is everything alright?"
"That's none of your business," Catherine replied coldly. Now that she was divorced from Leonard, she didn't have to worry about how his family perceived her.
Vivian, though, seemed to have not noticed the bitter animosity in Catherine's voice. She smiled and said, "Will you go shopping with me when you are free?"
Catherine scowled – Why would I want to go shopping with the woman that stole my husband and killed my child?!?!? "No," she replied. "I'm neither willing nor free."
Vivian frowned. "What's wrong?" she asked. "I thought that we were already friends."
"Why would I be friends with the woman who broke up my marriage?" Catherine hissed. "You wanted him so badly? Fine, he is yours! Now leave me alone. The sight of you makes me want to puke!" She turned to the old man, took a deep breath to calm herself, and said, "Grandpa, I'm going now, but I'll come and see you again soon." Then, before anyone could say anything, she turned to leave.
Unfortunately, she was not quick enough. With an insistent tone of voice, the old man said, "Wait. It is late. It's not safe for you to leave alone. Let Leonard accompany you."
Catherine smiled and said, "Thank you, but I can go alone. I am a big girl. Please don't bother Mr. Campbell."
The old man winked at Leonard.
Leonard stepped forward and said, "It's no trouble. I insist."
Catherine grumbled under her breath, but she gave up the argument. They will never let up - she realized unhappily. She turned and walked towards the door, and Leonard followed her. Before he could catch up to her, though, Vivian grabbed his arm and said, "Leonard, I brought you a gift. Do you want to take a look at it? I remembered that you like different brands of pens, so while I was on my last business trip, when I saw that a new brand of pens was being launched, I bought you one. Do you want to try it now?"
Leonard scowled at Vivian and pulled his arm away. "Wait until I come back," he said. "I'll look at it then."
Leonard turned back to the door, but Catherine was gone!
The old man was not happy about Vivian interrupting his Grandson, and when he saw that she intended to hold Leonard's hand, he said, in a less than the friendly tone of voice, "Vivian, I haven't seen you for some time. Chat with me for a while."
Vivian turned her head to look at Leonard. She opened her mouth, and she wanted to say something, but nothing came to her mind that was worth saying. Thus, all she could do was sit down beside the old man and watch unhappily as Leonard left the room.
As soon as Leonard was gone, the old man turned to Vivian and said, "Let's play a game of chess."
Vivian looked at the old man, and her cheeks turned red from embarrassment. "Grandpa, I can't play chess," she said. "I'm sorry, but I never learned how…"
"That is too bad," the old man said. "Catherine knows how. Every time she comes over, she always plays chess with me, and she is a good chess player."
Vivian knew that the old man liked Catherine more than he liked her. Even though she and Leonard had been childhood sweethearts, the old man had never had much use for her. Vivian wished that she didn't have to spend time with the old man, but she knew that if she wanted to be Leonard's wife, she would need to win his Grandfather's approval.
Vivian: "That doesn't surprise me. Catherine is awesome. I heard that she learned to play chess as a child."
"Cathy is gifted in many ways," the old man said. "You should know that she is the wife I would choose for my Grandson."
When Vivian heard this, she was so jealous, but she couldn't let her animosity show. She smiled and said, "Grandpa, can you teach me? Then I can play chess with you when I'm free."
The old man refused to teach her without having to think about it. He said, "You're not smart enough to play chess."
Vivian's lips twitched. She had always been good at school, but the old man treated her like an i***t.
The room went silent, and after a moment, the old man said, "You can leave now. I want to read a newspaper."

It was impossible to hail a taxi from Castle Campbell, so Catherine intended to walk until she got to the main road. Thus, when Leonard followed after her with his car, he caught up with her quickly. Once he spotted her, he pulled the car alongside her, lowered the window, and said, "Get in the car. I'll drive you home."
Catherine didn't even look at him, let alone get in the car. Thus, Leonard was forced to pull over and chase after her. Once he caught up to her, he grabbed her arm and shouted, "Catherine! Get in the car!"
Catherine shook off Leonard's hand and yelled back at him: "Mr. Campbell, don't touch me!"
