Chapter 5: Victoria

“Looks like we got here just in time,” Kate said with a bright smile. I looked at how she and Patrick walked in. His hand placed possessively on her hip. I tried to make eye contact with Patrick but he made it a point to not look at me. He escorted Kate to the opposite side of the table from where I was sitting at. Directly in front of Dem and I. Kate sat down and Patrick gently pushed her chair forward, so that she was seated appropriately. Such the f*****g gentleman. Kate smiled and thanked him, her hand gently brushing his arm as he took a seat next to her, opposite of Dem. He finally looked up at me I looked into his deep green eyes. I tried looking away but I found it hard to. I hated the attraction I felt for him. He kept me locked in a few seconds. Then Dem cleared his throat loudly making Patrick look in his direction and releasing me from his spell. I looked at Dem and gave him a silent thank you with my eyes. He winked back at me and then went back to his potato. I quickly blinked away the tears that crept up from the back of my eyes and placed a smile on my face and directed it to Kate. She was smiling back at me. “Hi, Victoria! It’s good to see you again, dear,” she said to me kindly. “Likewise, honey. I’m glad to see you are well.” I said back to her. “Yes. We can finally be at peace now that Nicolai is gone and the world is right again,” Kate answered, then thanking the Omega cook for the plate of food, she placed in front of her. I wish I could hate her. Kate, that is not the Omega cook. Since the first time I met Kate, I liked the female. She was genuinely kind and a hardcore witch. She knew her magic. I had considered her a good friend up until a few months ago, when I realized that her boyfriend, Patrick, was my mate. Being of Dragon species, we must kiss our mates to know that they are indeed our one and true mate. A few months ago when the Beta of this wolf clan was fighting a dark, evil warlock by the name of Nicolai, I worked long hours alongside Patrick, one of the Gamma’s of this clan. Our job was to organize the first Inter-species meeting of all times, in a short amount of time. We worked endless hours with leaders of the seven different species in our world. If we were going to catch Nicolai, we needed to work together. This was a goal that we both believed in and it drove our intense concentration during those couple of weeks. I still remember the first time I felt the sparks, all those months ago. Patrick and I were on maybe hour fifteen or so of strategizing location and security details of the plan before we presented it to the Alpha and the other species leaders. We were in one of the castle’s many offices, with papers and maps covering the tabletops. “Lady Victoria, I still think the leaders would feel more comfortable if they came in their animal forms. We need to make sure they feel safe enough to be able to protect themselves in case something goes South. I know I always feel better in my wolf form and I am guessing it is the same for you in your dragon form.” Patrick was saying to me. “But Patrick, I think it would look more threatening if we do that. And plus we would have less control over security measures. We can’t just let them fly out when ever they feel like it. I think we need to keep it neutral. It will also be showing an amount of trust from each species leader if they all agree to come in human form.” I tried reasoning with him. “I can see that point of view. Well, if you think that is best. Now I do think the entry point should be here at this spot,” Patrick said indicating with his finger on a spot on the map. I leaned in and the first indication I felt was that his breath on my skin felt warm. Which I found odd because, being the hot creatures that we are as dragons, nothing usually felt warm to me. I ignored and pushed the thought out of my mind. “You mean, here on the east side?” I asked putting my finger next to his and brushing it slightly. The second our fingers touched, a spark flew up my arm and I hissed, grabbing my hand back and stepping away from him. Patrick’s eyes flew open and he also jumped back from the table away from me. “What was that?” I asked him, automatically on guard. “Nothing,” he said quickly. I walked up to him and he retreated until his back hit the wall and there was nowhere else for him to run from me. I stepped up to him, “This is definitely “nothing,” I said placing my hand on his cheek, testing my theory. Again the warmth and the electrocution sensation went up, my arm. For a second he leaned his cheek into my hand and sighed. His skin felt good to me. I looked at his eyes and I couldn’t believe how green they were. I removed my hand and stepped back to take him in. I hadn’t really noticed before, but this male was hot. He was almost a head taller than me, which is a surprise because I am unnaturally tall. His broad, muscular shoulders were wide and were perfect for a female to hang on for dear life as he would ram that huge package between his legs into her. I couldn’t help but look down at the large bulge covered by blue jeans and knew that my conclusion must be correct. He had shaggy dark brown hair on the top of his head and couldn’t help but reach up to touch the softness of the wavy strands and when he noticed my hand reaching for him, making him quickly move out of my reach, escaping my touch. I dropped my hand, feeling the sting of rejection flow through me. I don’t know what was going on between the Gamma and I but I knew it was something important. “I’m sorry, Lady Victoria. Why don’t we take a break? We have been going at this strategizing for many hours, we are both exhausted. Let us pick up again in a few hours.” He suggested to me, from the door. “So, you are ignoring whatever the hell is happening here?” I asked him, not turning to look him. I wanted to keep what little pride I had left, intact. “I have my Kate, Victoria,” he said simply and walked out the door. Even though the importance of those few words was that he had a female, I focused on the way he said my name, without using a title in front of it. He called me plain, Victoria and I loved to hear my name coming from his mouth. After doing some research of my own I found out what sparks meant to the werewolf species, it meant they had found their mate. Every time they were around their mate the sparks would get more intense until the last piece of the wolf’s heart fell into place and their heart would be complete. I couldn’t believe it, I had finally found my mate. A dragon can go a hold lifetime without finding their mate, which is why our numbers were dwindling. The Fire God had gifted me with mine, even though I couldn’t confirm it until I kissed him, which I planned to do the next time I saw him. I knew he was dating Kate, but I was his mate. Surely he would choose me. I was wrong. Every meeting after that first touch, he made sure that we were never alone. I never got the opportunity to speak to him much less touch him, again. Here I thought the worst thing in life was not finding my true mate. Again, I was wrong. The worst thing in life is finding your mate and he choosing to be with someone else. That is a life worse than death. Dear Fire God, what do you want from me?
