1. The End of a Marriage
“Divorce?”
The anger in Zane’s voice confused Alexa even more. During their five years of marriage, he never really cared about what she wanted to do. He didn’t care about her buying things, eating out, or going on vacations, not that she did often. Zane Williams treated her like she was a ghost. Or as if she didn’t exist at all.
“I’m not going to ask for much,” she said, her voice shaking, “you keep your pre-marital properties and I’ll do the same. There’s nothing much between us, so—”
She flinched when he slammed his fist against the wall, almost breaking their wedding portrait. The sound of glass shattering was overwhelming. So was his reaction.
“Do you even hear yourself, Alexandra? Divorce? I don’t give a damn about whatever you want to do with your life, but you know that this is the deal-breaker for me.”
She gulped, trying to hold back her tears. “What are you going on about, Zane? Our relationship isn’t working, and you know that I’m not happy anymore. At least just let me go.”
Alexa gasped when Zane grabbed her by the arm, squeezing her. “You think after what you did, I’m just going to let you leave me, Alexandra?”
She removed his grip, gasping for air. Her panic attacks were starting to set in once again. Her tears didn’t hold back anymore, and they began to fall as she painfully watched his mad expression.
“For god’s sake, Zane! You were the one neglecting this relationship! You only come home when you want to, and you always forget important dates. You’re always with Janna, so why am I the one at fault now? That doesn’t seem right at all!”
He frustratingly ran his fingers through his hair. “Is this about Janna again, huh? Seriously? How many times do I have to explain to you that she’s just a friend of mine? I’m trying to guide her through her career, so it’s natural that we’re going to spend time together!”
“For five years?” she mumbled.
“What?”
“Are you still guiding her in her career, even if it’s almost five years now since she signed up under your agency?” Alexa scoffed. “She’s a bad investment, then.”
Zane sighs, placing the divorce papers on the coffee table. “Look, you’re being unreasonable again. Is this another trick you used to catch my attention? I’m tired of all of this bullsh*t, Alexa. What are you going to do next, tell me that you’re pregnant even though you know I don’t want any kids? For f*ck’s sake, woman! At least have some pride! ”
“Do I always look like an attention-seeker to you, Zane?” She bitterly smiled, before biting her lip. She already predicted it anyway. It would be better to divorce him now. “Oh, well. Sign the papers, then. So you won’t have anyone to stress you out.”
She knew she couldn’t handle being with him for any longer now. Alexa knew she was patient, but even the strongest towers crumble over time. Zane had drained her and pushed her to the edge.
She knew he didn’t love her at all. It was an arranged marriage for the two of them because of their mothers, and she had just got lucky getting married to the youngest and richest CEO in X. She knew she had tried her best. She tolerated the cold nights when she had to wait for him to come home or the ones where they only fulfilled their marital duties without any ounce of love.
Alexa never complained. Just this once. But why was he acting as if she had committed the worst crime imaginable?
He took a harsh, deep breath before grabbing the paper and taking out a pen from his coat pocket. “Fine. You want a divorce? Then I’m going to give it to you.”
He almost crumpled the paper as he signed it, before throwing it on the floor. She silently picked it up, trying not to let out any ounce of pain nor let him see that she was affected by his reactions.
“I don’t want to see your face anymore. I don’t even want you to get near to me, nor remember that we both shared a home. A—”
She cleared her throat, before pulling the small suitcase from the side of the couch. “Don’t worry, Mr. Williams. I have already arranged for someone to pick up my things tomorrow. Everything else will be handled by my lawyers.”
He scoffed as she turned away, his hatred-filled words cutting deep into her heart. “I regret ever marrying you.”
She stopped in her tracks to look at him. Then, she bitterly smiled. “Same here.”
The roads were cold and desolate, which didn’t surprise her anymore. After all, Alexa had been waiting for him to come home until midnight, just to make him sign those stupid divorce papers. It wasn’t the best thing for a pregnant woman like her to do, but she knew her husband never cared for her anyway.
She sighed as she pulled out her phone and told someone her current location. Soon after, a black luxury vehicle pulls up in front of her. The driver must’ve been worried sick, knowing that a pregnant woman was left to wait outside a grand mansion in the cold.
“Miss Havencourt! Please get in the car, it’s getting chilly outside. You and your child might get sick.”
She flashed her assistant a timid smile before letting him take her luggage to the trunk of the car. She sat in the back, letting herself relax after that heated argument. Her assistant started to drive away from Zane’s mansion while throwing her glances.
“If you want to ask something, fire away.”
“Are you…” James hesitated,” really going to divorce Mr. Williams now?”
She shrugged before placing the almost crumpled divorce papers on her lap, taking a quick look at it. “Why not? The marriage was doomed from the start. It’s not like he really loved me, anyway.”
James sighed. “ Finally, some sense got knocked on you…”
She chuckled. “ Even saints got limited patience, James.”
Her assistant beamed at her through the rearview mirror. “Does that mean that you’re finally going to come out as the CEO of Starlight officially?”
She fell silent. To be honest, she hasn’t given a thought to that at all. After all, Starlight was her husband’s rival company. After she secretly inherited it from her mother, she worked hard to make it flourish without asking her father for any assistance. The divorce rumor might affect her reputation if she steps out immediately.
“Not yet. I need to go overseas for a bit to deliver my baby, then I’ll come back here. I trust you’ll still do your duty, yes?”
James laughed. “That’s not even a question for me, Miss Havencourt.” He glanced at her belly. “But… did you tell Mr. Williams about the child?”
“What for?” She mockingly laughed. “It’s not like he’ll love our child anyway.”
He didn’t say anything, probably because he sensed the bitterness in her voice. Before she could even rest her eyes, her phone rang. It was Simon Havencourt, her father.
“Dad? What’s wrong?”
“You sl*t! I never expected that you’d bring our family shame!”
Her eyebrows furrowed. “What are you talking about, Dad? You’re—”
“Sydney told me that you cheated on Zane that’s why you’re getting a divorce! You disappointed me, Alexandra!”
“What? We’re in the process of divorce, but that’s because Zane was the one neglecting me! And besides—”
“And you still try to reason, huh? I don’t want to see your face, so don’t ever dare to come back here! From now on, I don’t have a daughter!”
She could taste iron in her mouth as she threw her phone on the seat. To some degree, she could understand her father’s rage. After all, Zane was the richest person in the city. Offending him was the last thing anyone would want to do.
But her heart couldn’t help but feel like it was being trampled over and over again. Sydney sent her a picture of Zane and Janna kissing earlier, which prompted her to proceed with the divorce. Why was she telling her father that she was the one who cheated?
And why did he even believe her, without asking her first?
“So much for loving someone,” she whispered as she leaned on the window and closed her eyes.
“Are you alright, Miss Havencourt?”
“Yes, I am. Please tell them to prepare the private jet. I’ll be leaving the country today.”
“Noted, Miss Havencourt.”
She gently massaged her temples and softly patted her belly. It was starting to bulge, but her ex-husband didn’t even notice at all. She scoffed. What did she even expect? He never really cared.
She was just a trophy wife to him. Now, he would have the chance to be with his ex-fiance, Janna. Maybe they can build their dreams that came crashing down the moment she stepped onto the scene.
Why did he even hate her that much? It was their mothers who arranged their union, not her. If anything else, she was first unwilling, until she found her heart slowly falling for him.
If there was any crime committed, it was her loving him more than herself.
“Zane Williams…” she gritted under her teeth before closing her eyes, “one day, I’ll show you what you lost.”
