8 FROM THE ANIMAL MARKETS, we walked into the city centre to find our accommodation, an apartment close to the centre of the city, in one of the city’s old dark stone buildings with small windows. I had heard that at one time there used to be no glass inside these windows, and I was glad that I did not live in that time, because I was frozen solid even from walking the short distance from the livestock markets. The guesthouse catered to visiting business people, reflected in the quiet air of professionalism of the foyer and reception area. The keys to the apartment we had booked already lay waiting for us, and checking in was so efficient that we didn’t even have the time to look at the numerous historical artefacts that were displayed in glass-fronted cabinets around the room.
