WE FOUND THE HOUSE where Benton Leck’s wife lived in the old part of the city, within the city walls. It was a two-storey house in the traditional style of the Endri noble class of Miran. The main part of the house had two floors and, over the years, single-storey extensions had been built onto the sides. The front door was at the veranda, two steps up from the yard, which was covered in nothing except snow. The path had been cleared from the gate to the steps.
We had decided that Thayu and I would go inside, and that the rest of the team would keep an eye out in the street.
The intrusive security at the airport made me quite nervous, and I wanted to make sure we were not being followed. I swear, if one was not paranoid before coming here, this place quickly turned you paranoid.
