*Brody*
I watched as her chest slowly rose and fell in rhythmic movements. Her small hands were covered with large plasters holding cannulae in place, and her pale skin was covered with many scratches and bruises with varying degrees of healing. Her face seemed too small compared to the mass of cold brown hair that framed her face, but I still found her to be the most beautiful woman despite that.
'When will she wake up? I want to take her home, mark her, claim her.' My wolf has been complaining the same thing for several days, triggering another wave of migraines.
'Not so fast, man. She is a human, not a werewolf, so this issue must be addressed skillfully. Maybe she doesn't want to be with someone like us.' I reminded him, but he didn't listen at all.
'Who wouldn't want to be with their destined mate?' he asked, not waiting for an answer but instead focusing on observing the woman lying in the hospital bed.
Well, who wouldn't want to be with their destined mate? I. This answer came to mind whenever someone discussed this topic with me or before me. I am not a supporter of mates, and I prayed, I prayed sincerely, that I would not meet on the road the woman chosen for me by the Moon Goddess. I've experienced this once and can't say that this fact made me happy; on the contrary, it made me remove the word mate from my dictionary.
"Knock, knock. Can I come in?" A gentle knock and Harlow's quiet voice greeted me from behind the slightly open door.
"Sure. Come in. Your expertise is always welcome here." I pulled a chair next to me, and Harlow jumped in it, smiling and staring at the patient.
"Some changes?" She asked, but I didn't answer, so I gave her the files that the doctor on duty left after the last round, or I skilfully stole it from him.
"You tell me," I replied, standing up to get a better look at my second chance mate.
"Hmm. The results are promising. There is no swelling on the brain, and the internal organs are not damaged. They may be slightly injured, but not enough to cause hemorrhages. Her wounds heal at a human pace, and the drips provide the necessary vitamins. In short, she will recover from this. " Harlow concluded eagerly, placing the report on the table.
"Then why doesn't she wake up?" I asked, irritated after sitting here for the fourth day since I found her in the wall, barely breathing.
"And this is not a question for me nor the doctor. She, or rather her body, will make this decision and wake up at the most appropriate moment for her health." Harlow explained, placing her kind hand on my shoulder.
"Can't you help her with that?" I asked, remembering how she had helped us recover from some grueling missions for the Council. As a Healer, Harlow has helped us one too many times.
"I would love to, but you know that it could also harm her, right? She is not like us and does not react to anything related to our world like we do. Humans are built differently; some aspects of our lives will never be available to them." She reminded me with an apologetic face.
I nodded, knowing well what being a human in a pack of wolves was like. Or rather, I knew someone who told me what she disliked most about being different from werewolves. My wolf howled sadly at the thought, so I quickly stopped dwelling on the past. There's nothing that can be done about it. The past has happened; now, I can only focus on the future and prevent anything from happening to any of my loved ones.
I glanced again at my mate, hopefully sleeping comfortably in the hospital bed, and placed my hand on hers, experiencing those sparks again. Her hand was cold, and mine was so warm that the coldness of her skin quickly disappeared, giving her skin a slightly healthier color.
"What's her name? It wasn't on the card." Harlow asked suddenly, and I let go of her hand, stopping the dance sparks between our bodies.
"Luna," I said in surprise and quickly cleared my throat. "Luna Monroe. I paid for her anonymous treatment, so she is not in the official reports." I added this so she would know we could not tell anyone yet that we had found her or Natalie.
We were in human territory, and any mention of werewolves could not only put us in a bad light but could jeopardize our entire society, which would lead to persecution and hunts for shapeshifters.
"Alpha Kinsley would like to talk to you, Brody. Natalie is completely healed and ready to go home. They would both like to thank you for your help." Harlow moved towards the door, taking one last look at my sleeping little Luna before she bowed and left me alone.
I sighed deeply, staring at Luna's pale face. I hadn't even seen her eyes yet, and I already knew that one look into them would make it harder for me to stick to my decision.
'I won't let you do stupid things. Dad would kick your ass for even thinking about rejection. And mom-' My wolf stopped, unable to finish his threat.
'Leave the past in the past. I no longer have them, and no one will dictate how I live or make decisions.' I became angry at the mention of my parents.
I clenched my fists, quickly left the room, and headed towards where Natalie was staying. I didn't pay attention to anyone, react to overheard comments about my appearance, or encourage the nurses to ask one of them out on a date. I wasn't ugly; I knew it. Although none of my genes matched those of my father or brother, fate gave me similar beauty and hair; the only thing that distinguished me from them was the color of my eyes. Instead of green, I had brown ones, and according to my mother, they were one of the most beautiful colors anyone could have.
I loved my mom, and even though she wasn't my biological mom, she had been the center of my universe for as long as I could remember. We had an extraordinary bond, not because our wolves accepted each other but because we were outsiders in our family. My dad became a widower at a very young age when my older brother Blake was born. He met my mother a few years later and ultimately lost his mind for her, making her a second mother to Blake, who fell in love with her from the very first moment.
My mother was human, and due to health problems, she couldn't have children even though she wanted them very much, and then my father found me. An abandoned rogue destined for an orphanage with a disreputable reputation. I became her opportunity to experience being a mother from the very beginning. And I thank the Goddess and every existing God in the universe for giving me such a wonderful woman as a mother while at the same time cursing them inwardly for taking her away from me too soon.
"Brody Jones?"
I heard my name as I approached Natalie and her father's room. Several warriors who had arrived with Alpha Kinsley moved decisively towards me, ready for a duel. I stopped and realized that in my thoughts, I had released the anger I had been holding deep within me, and my aura had alerted them, classifying me as a danger.
"Yes, I'm sorry." I quickly calmed down by regulating the flow of pheromones through my body, "I was thinking about those scoundrels, and I got a little carried away thinking about their torture, hence the dark aura." I explained, but they didn't change their attitude.
"Calm down guys. This is the man who saved Natalie; let him through."
Alpha Kinsley's loud, authoritative voice came from behind the closed door. The group bowed and dispersed, allowing me to enter the room without problems.
"It's cool, guys, I understand and respect you. But you have nothing to fear; I won't hurt them." I turned to the warriors before opening the door and entering the room where Natalie was sitting on the edge of the bed, ready to leave.
As soon as I walked in, she jumped off the bed and screamed at me, hugging me around the waist, digging her chin into my chest, looking at me like I was her hero, crying and mumbling words of thanks and appreciation for my heroic fight to free her.
"Natalie, control yourself, honey. You'll crush his ribs." Alpha Kinsley moved to pull Natalie away from me, but her grip was surprisingly firm for such a little girl that I had to help him break free.
"You're welcome, Miss Kinsley. It was my job, and Alpha Kinsley gave me the order. He should be thanked, not me. I was following orders." I obliged, moving away from her a dozen or so steps.
"I'm sorry for my enthusiasm, but despite playing strong in that container or house, I didn't believe in rescue. But I managed to do it, and thanks to you and your famous unit, I'm here safe and sound." She burst into tears, smiling gratefully at me.
I bowed to accept the compliment but didn't feel good about it. What these girls went through shouldn't have happened, so I didn't feel like a hero rescuing a damsel in distress. There were more of them, and only these two miraculously survived. I need to get back to base and start scouring the country for these thugs and exterminate them. This is the only way to cleanse the world of evil, which spreads more and more around the world every year.
"How is Luna? Is she awake yet?" Natalie asked, breaking me from my thoughts.
"Yes, what about the other girl? Natalie worked with her in the same publishing house, so I don't know what procedures you use in such cases." Alpha Kinsley asked, turning our casual conversation into business.
"Until this whole matter is resolved, we recommend that Miss Kinsley remain in the pack. She does not go outside its territory and does not contact anyone outside. We do not know who assisted in this kidnapping." I turned to Alpha, and he agreed with me, cradling his youngest daughter to him, "To the public, you are still missing with an ongoing search, so as soon as I get medical approval to transport Miss Monroe to the rehabilitation center at Council headquarters, we will disappear from here and hide her until regaining consciousness and full strength to return to their former life." I added, but my heart felt tight at the thought of sending Luna away and breaking off contact.
"But she has no one to take care of her when she returns. Can I take her to our pack?" Natalie asked, turning to her father.
"Honey, I don't know how she will react to our existence. Maybe we should wait with such things until she wakes up and see if she remembers anything at all." Alpha Kinsley suggested, and Natalie accepted.
"Mr. Jones,"
"Brody," I corrected. "Mr. Jones is my dad; I'm Brody," I added, feeling another tightness in my heart as I remembered my dad.
"Brody, please take care of Luna. Please let me know when she wakes up, and I will help her recover. You don't know how fiercely she defended us there; I can't leave her alone like this now. I have to thank her for her fight and sacrifice."
"Of course. I'll let you know when Miss Monroe opens her eyes." I promised and said goodbye to them as I left the room and headed towards the hospital exit.
Harlow and Emery were waiting outside Luna's room, guarding it in my absence. I had to move my muscles and burn off all this stress, so I went to the nearby forest, stripped off my clothes, and gave control to my snow-white wolf. I vented the steam that overwhelmed me daily while waiting for my little Luna to wake up.
