By the time Sophie and Roberto had finished their lessons in the Society’s customs and practices, there was little doubt that they would apply to join. As Sophie put it, they seemed to have got more than halfway there already on their own, and joining would merely regularise their existing s****l arrangements, extending their opportunities while diminishing the risk of encountering unsuitable company.
“The great thing about the Society,” she said thoughtfully, “is that everyone is vouched for. They wouldn’t be allowed in if they weren’t approved, and there is obviously a system for weeding out undesirables.”
