Chaos POV
Skye thrashed around on me in her sleep, her body twisting and turning. Desperate to calm her, I held her tightly. Despite my efforts to wake her, sleep continued to hold her in its grip.
"She needs to finish her dream," Blade warned me, his voice low and grave. "She used her power to remember the past. We may hurt her more if we pull her out."
I felt a surge of frustration and helplessness. I couldn't bear to see her in pain. Searching for peace, I began to hum the lullaby my mother used to sing to me, the melody resonating softly in the room. It was one of the few memories I had left of her. To my relief, Skye seemed to momentarily calm, her restless movements subsiding as she leaned against my body.
"I'm coming in," Colson's voice announced from behind the closed door. "I hope you two are decent. I know how wild you shifters get."
The door swung open, and Colson entered the room. He closed the door behind him, his gaze immediately drawn to Skye, peacefully sleeping against me.
"You know she is real special, right?" Colson whispered to me, his voice filled with reverence.
I nodded, my eyes never leaving Skye's serene face. As she stirred in my arms, the star-shaped mark on her forehead began to glow again, casting a soft light. Colson clicked his tongue.
"She is using her power, finally," he remarked. "It's been some time since she used any of them. It seems you give her the confidence she needs."
He takes a worn-out wooden chair and settles himself down with a creak. As I softly hum the lullaby again since Skye is moving around more. Gradually, her restless movements begin to subside, and a sense of calm washes over her. This brings a gentle chuckle from Colson.
"Got to say, I never thought your kind would be so gentle," he remarks with a smile. "But it's a good thing you are. Since the first moment I met her when she was just a little pup, she has always needed closed physical contact with those she trusts. It's more than your typical pup's connection. At first, we believed it was due to the circumstances we found her in. However, as she grew with us, she remained the same for a long time. Always craving physical contact, seeking to be held like a child or snuggle close. We quickly learned that this helped her cope."
"When she started struggling with her powers, it took a heavy toll on her. No matter how hard we all tried, she became depressed. Her powers, once a source of comfort, suddenly became painful. It was heart-wrenching for all of us to witness her suffering. Yet, she always put on a brave face, smiling and trying to help others even with her own struggles. She possesses an extraordinary power for caring, seeing the good in everyone she encounters."
Pausing briefly, he shakes his head, a mix of admiration and sadness in his eyes. "She has been through so much, both physically and emotionally. Her powers have caused her immense pain, exposing her to things she should never have heard at such a young age. But unless you truly know her, you would never guess the extent of her pain."
"I'm telling you all this because it's now your job to protect her. She is a fierce fighter, and she doesn't need someone to fight her battles. What she needs is comfort, love, and affection. She needs someone to hold her and provide peace. I believe you can offer her that, without overwhelming her. So, keep doing what you're doing right now. It is clear your presence brings her peace."
As he finishes speaking, she snuggles closer against me, seeking the reassurance and comfort she craves in her sleep.
Although I have to say, I'll have to get used to being around a vampire, him telling me a little more about her is helpful. I want to do what is right for Skye. I had feared my touch all the time may cause her pain. I need to stop holding back with her.
"I got a map and some supplies," he says. "We can go over everything when she wakes. I hate to say it, but this place won't be safe long, so we need to be prepared to continue." His voice carries a sense of impending danger. "I could not get much more info, but there is a crowd slowly coming into this town, and you can tell they are up to no good," he explains.
"I understand and will be ready," I reply.
"I'll be in my room," he says as he gets up and leaves, his footsteps fading away. The silence that follows is deafening. A compassionate vampire, a concept I never thought possible.
I question my own actions as well. My kind is known for its fierceness, yet something about Skye compels me to act differently. I never wanted her to see me as fierce, for she is not my enemy.
After what feels like an eternity, her eyes slowly open. Relief washes over me, knowing she is no longer trapped in the nightmares of her past. But I can still feel her fear through our bond, and it breaks my heart.
"Chaos," she whispers, her voice barely audible. Her gaze meets mine, searching for something.
"Do you have a birthmark?" she asks, catching me slightly off guard.
"Yes, although a scar covers most of it," I admit.
"Can I see it?" she asks.
"Sure," I respond, a mix of curiosity and confusion swirling within me.
I momentarily shift off the soft bed to remove my shirt. As I do, I point to a small scar on my side. "It should be there," I say to her, as she steps closer, her hand gliding over my skin. I feel a gentle touch and then her eyes studying it closely. "It's a moon," she whispers, her voice barely audible. "I suppose it does sort of look like a crescent moon," I admit.
I wonder where she's going with her questions. "Does your brother have one too?" she asks. "Not that I know of," I confess, a hint of uncertainty in my voice. "But then again, it's not like I searched him for one."
"Did your parents have one?" she probes, and I try to delve into the depths of my memories. I really don't have many recollections of my parents. "I don't remember," I say. "But my mother... she used to cover it up when I was a pup. Now that I think about it, she didn't do that for my brother. So maybe he didn't have one." The mark had never held much significance to me until now.
"So then, you're the lycan my mother spoke of. I guess it makes sense since you're my mate. The moon goddess paired us together so I could keep you safe," she murmurs, her voice filled with a mix of awe and confusion.
"Skye, do you know something about my mark?" I ask, my confusion growing. "Sort of," she begins, her voice hesitant. "I'm really confused about everything, but I'll tell you what happened in my memories." She takes a deep breath, and begins to unveil the secrets locked within her mind.
"So you're saying I'm different than most lycans?" I questioned her, my brow furrowing in confusion.
"I think, I really don't know much," she admitted.
"Chaos, that song you were humming where did you learn it?" she asked, her voice soft yet filled with curiosity.
"My mother, she sang it to me," I replied, a hint of nostalgia lacing my words. "Although I don't remember the lyrics, just the tune." The memories danced at the edge of my consciousness, just out of reach.
"It's the same song my mother sang to me as well," she explained, her words carrying a hint of melancholy.
"It's a lullaby from the unicorn kingdom," she continued, her voice laced with a mix of wonder and confusion.
"So my mother sang me a unicorn lullaby," I mused, trying to grasp the significance.
"Chaos, I think you're from the unicorn kingdom, or your family was," she explained, her words sinking in. "Apparently, we protected your kind, we lived together."
"I don't have many memories of when I was a pup before I went to live in the kingdom orphanage," I confessed, my voice filled with a hint of sadness. "I only have clips of my family."
"Maybe they had your memories erased," Skye suggested, her voice tinged with concern. "I don't know if I can connect with them if they did, but I could try."
"I don't want you to stress yourself more," I reassured her, my voice filled with genuine care. "First, rest some more." There was a moment of hesitation in her eyes, a flicker of unresolved emotions. I knew she had learned more, and whatever it was, she was truly struggling with it.
"Colson, he is back, right?" she said. It was clear she was trying to change the subject, but I had a feeling whatever was bothering her was important.
"He is," I replied. "And he wanted us to get him when you were awake." As she made a move to get off the bed, I reached out and stopped her.
"Can you tell me what you're hiding from me, Skye?" I asked, my voice gentle but filled with concern.
"I'm broken," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
"You're not broken," I reassured her, my hand resting on her shoulder.
"Yes, I am. I guess if I had just gone back into my memories before I came here, I would have learned that the unicorn kingdom most likely does not have a cure for my control issues. But still, it's important that I'm here because I know now I need to make sure you get into the kingdom, and I will do that," she explained.
"Why do you believe you won't find the answers you seek now?" I questioned softly.
"I'll show you," she whispered, and I felt her opening the mental link that mates share. Soon, a flood of images filled my mind as she shared with me what she had seen. I couldn't suppress a growl after witnessing all of it, and then I remembered Colson's advice.
Immediately, I wrapped my arms around her, pulling her close to me. "When you were young, you had more control, correct? Even after that?" I asked.
"Yes," she admitted, her voice filled with a mixture of sadness and frustration.
"I don't think that caused your lack of control now. If it was, I doubt you would have had it as a pup. Maybe it's just because as you get older, your powers are growing as well. I would not give up hope that you won't find answers, and I am going to help you as well," I reassured her.
"Having even just some of the power from my horn means someone out there may hold control over me. What if they use me to hurt you when I'm meant to protect you? My birth mother said it was my job. You're important, Chaos," she confessed, her voice filled with worry.
"I'm not saying you're wrong about me being special, but I doubt anyone here knows Skye. Otherwise, why would they have not tried to do something to me before? I've been their prisoner here for a long time," I admitted.
"Or they could have known, but since they had you locked away, they could keep an eye on you," Skye said. "There are wanted posters for you already. I'm just really worried and confused. This is all really hard for me to understand, and I don't want anything to happen to you," Skye admitted, her voice trembling.
"I understand there is much we don't know right now, but one thing is for sure – we will protect each other. We will figure all this out together, I promise," I reassured her, my voice steady. "I'm not letting anyone control you, and from what I have already witnessed with you, I doubt anyone can. I believe you are strong enough to fight it. If something happens, because I know you well, you are very strong. So for now, even though it is hard, I need you to take a deep breath for me, like you tell me to do, and try to calm your mind. Know that we are in this together."
"Thanks, Chaos," she said, her voice filled with gratitude. All she learned had me thinking deeply. I guess I always have been different, but I never thought much of it. Although I trained a lot in my human form as well, I stood out for my ability to fight others when shifted without shifting myself. And then, in lycan form, I was more immune to certain substances, such as silver. Although it still burned, I have always healed faster, and it did not stop me from fighting. Was it really possible I was some other type of Lycan? If that's true, I'll accept that side of me and use it to always keep Skye safe. She is what's most important to me now, even if I have some destined purpose, as her memory claimed. Skye's safety is still my number one priority.
