"I wouldn't say I'm one of the richest. Let's just say I'm comfortable,"
I rolled my eyes at the words as I wondered why he was trying to be humble when he didn't need to be.
"Whatever you say then Mr. CEO," I said as I drew imaginary circles with my feet.
He shook his head at my words as he cleared his throat.
"So this is where you stay?"
We were currently standing outside my apartment after my not-so-little encounter with those drunk fellows. I thanked him over and over again. He waved my thanks aside saying it was the gentlemanly thing to do; saving a damsel in distress.
He had insisted on walking me home after I refused to catch a ride with him in his car.
Truth be told, his car reminded me of Carlos and the night I lost my virginity. It was the exact car that Carlos drove that night.
"Yes, it's not fancy neither is it a penthouse but it is home," I replied as I thought of all the memories I had created with Charles and Lou in this very apartment.
"You still haven't given me your number, you know. I would love to go out with you sometime,"
"Really?"
"Yes. You seem fun and…..beautiful," he said making me blush.
"Alright then," I replied as he handed me his phone to input my number.
I returned his phone to him after I had typed in my number.
“I need to go in now. Have a good night and thank you once again, Mr. Leonardo,”
“It's alright. I hope to see you again soon and please, call me Leo. You sound like one of my employees which you are not,”
I chuckled at this response.
“Okay “Leo”. Goodnight,” I said as I gave him a little wave.
I walked up the stairs smiling to myself. He seemed so nice and down to earth for someone who could afford to buy the whole block if he wanted to.
I had tried dating after I had my son but I didn't turn out so well.
The first guy I met-Glen had tried touching me intimidately during our first date; he had his hand on my thigh under the table as he gradually attempted to move it further north.
I excused myself and went to the bathroom and I left from there without bothering to tell him but not before blocking his number to prevent him from calling me.
The second guy-Harold tried to get me to move in with him after two weeks of dating. According to him, he wanted me all to himself and didn't want me to come with Charles. He asked me to hand Charles over to Lou.
I broke up with him immediately he uttered those words. He was trying to make me choose between him and my son and I was always going to choose my son in this life and the next.
I rang the doorbell and waited for Lou to open the door as I readied myself for her questions.
She had been blowing my phone up with calls and messages. I knew she was worried about me as I was usually home by this time.
The door opened to reveal an angry looking Lou.
“Where have you been? I've been calling and texting you all evening without getting a reply from you. What happened? Why's there a lot of dirt on you jeans? Are you hurt?,” she asked, bombarding me with questions.
“Okay, calm down. I'm fine Lou,” I said as I stepped into the living room.
“What do you mean you're fine? Charles has been waiting for you and now, you're walking back home with dirt smeared all over you. You better start talking,”
I let out a long sigh and I began to explain the events of this evening.
“……..and that was when Leo showed up and rescued me. The dirt on my jeans was because I tripped while they were chasing me, but I'm okay, I promise,”
“Oh Angela,” Lou said as she hugged me.
“I was so worried. I'm so glad you're okay. Those bastards are lucky they didn't touch you. I would have hunted them down,” she said as she released me from the hug.
I laughed at the thought of Lou attacking men who were twice her size.
“Where is Charles?,” I asked as I searched around, surprised that he didn't run to hug me at the sound of my voice as he normally did.
“I put him to bed some minutes ago,” Lou replied as she sat down on the couch to watch a movie.
“What would I do with you?” I said as I hugged her on the couch.
“Get off me with your dirty clothes. You're lucky I work from home,” she said as she pushed me off.
I gave her a smile and went into the bedroom to change out of my dirty clothes and clean up.
Charles was already fast asleep on the bed as we both shared a room. I gave him a light kiss on his forehead and stripped out of my dirty clothes.
I walked into the bathroom and looked myself in the mirror. My hair was sticking out in different places and I groaned as I thought of Leo seeing me like this as he walked me home.
I hopped into the shower as cold water fell on my skin giving me and immediate sense of relief.
I scrubbed my body off paying extra attention to my arms where those fools held me. It was as though I was trying to wash off the experience.
I dried my body with a towel and put on a night gown as my stomach growled reminding me that I haven't had anything to eat this night.
I walked out of my room and silently closed the door so as not to wake Charles up.
I searched the fridge for something to eat but all I could find were some apples and ice cream.
We really needed to do some grocery shopping.
“Lou, can you order a pizza? I'm starving,” I said from the kitchen.
“I already did,” Lou replied as she raised a box of pizza above her head for me to see.
“You're a lifesaver you know that?” I said as I grabbed the box from her.
“I know,”
“Now, when are you going on a date with Leo?”
