"f*****g hell!!!" Jason muttered leaning his head against the headrest. I scrambled out of his lap back to my seat not bothering to adjust my underwear back to its proper place.
"Oh God, we're dead." I whispered, eyes closed as I tried to make myself look presentable.
"Christ Princess, calm down. With the way you're acting someone would think we had a dead body in the back." He said zipping up his pants just as the cop knocked on the window. Jason glanced at me and I nodded, placing my hands on my lap. He rolled the window down and the officer came into view.
"Good evening." He said peering into the cabin with his flashlight. "Where are you two coming from?"
"The fair." Jason replied sitting up. "Isn't it a school night?" The officer countered. "We're from Vermont and it's a public holiday over there." He explained. The cop didn't look convinced and narrowed his eyes at us.
"License and registration then." He demanded. Jason turned to me. "Princess, can you help me get them from the compartment?" He asked. I nodded and leaned forward, opening the compartment and getting the papers. I handed them to Jason who pulled out his wallet and got his license before handing it over to the officer.
"Stay put. I'll be right back." He instructed walking to his car. I let out a breath I had no idea I was holding.
"Are you okay?"he asked, holding my hand. I shook my head, letting out a sigh.
"I'm nervous and scared" I whispered looking at him.
"Hey" he leaned over and cupped my cheek. "Nothing's going to happen. Alright? I won't let anything happen to you. You trust me right?"
I nodded "Yeah" I answered blinking back the tears. I was frightened, I had never been stopped or questioned by a cop. Jason gently squeezed my hand just as the cop walked back to us.
"Sorry for the delay, everything checks out. I apologise once again." He said handing him the documents. "No problem officer." He replied "Stay safe." The officer left and we watched as his car drove past ours. I heaved a sigh of relief and Jason chuckled.
"I told you it'll be fine." He said starting up the truck, he drove onto the main road and soon we were on our way back to Vermont. The ride was a quiet one and before I knew it we were in Vermont.
"Do you wanna stop and get something to eat?" He asked. "A bottle of water, I'm kind of thirsty." I replied. He nodded parking at the gas station, we got out and walked to the convenience store.
Gladys was manning the shop, she smiled at us, striking up a conversation with Jason while I wandered down the aisle to the fridges. I opened the door and picked up two bottles of water. "Jason, do you want a drink?" I called out.
"Nah Princess. A bottle of water for me too." He replied. I closed the fridge and headed to the counter, where Jason was having a conversation with Gladys.
"...just come by the garage and we'll see what's wrong with your car." He instructed as I place the bottles on the counter. He wrapped an arm around my waist and pulled me into his body, leaning down to kiss my hair making Gladys coo which in turn made me blush.
Jason paid for the water and we walked back to the truck. I took a sip of the water as he drove in the direction of Upper Vermont, his hand on my thigh.
A few minutes later, we arrived at my house. I turned to him.
"C... can you stay the night? I really don't want to be alone." I asked, my voice coming out smaller than I wanted.
"Don't you think Siobhan is going to kill me if she finds me wrapped up in bed with her bosses' daughter?" He asked.
"She won't be back till tomorrow afternoon." I replied tucking the hair behind my ear.
"Alright then. Lead the way Princess" he said switching off the ignition. I smiled and got out of the car not forgetting to grab my new teddy. We walked across the street to my house, I pushed the gate open and we got in. We made our way up the driveway and I unlocked the door, entering and locking the door behind us.
"Siobhan said she left food in the oven so I'm gonna go get that and we can head up to my room." I said pointing in the direction of the kitchen. He nodded and I headed for the kitchen, opening the oven to see a plate of potato casserole, the smell alone had my stomach growling, I picked up two forks and made my way back to the foyer where Jason was staring up at a painting on the wall.
"My parents thought it would be a good idea to have our family portrait painted instead of a picture." I explained staring at the large framed painting.
"Wow." He whispered "that must have been fun." I could detect the sarcasm in his voice a mile away and he was right, it was pure torture, having to stand there for hours.
"Come on." I said pulling him towards the stairs, to my room. Once we reached my room, I closed the door behind us and placed the casserole on the table, shrugging off my jacket.
"I'm going to go take a shower."
"Is that an invitation?" He asked walking over to me, I felt my throat dry and I took a step back until my back bumped into the wall and I realised I had nowhere to run. He caged me in, leaning until our faces were inches apart.
"I.... I..." I stuttered trying to articulate my thoughts. He chuckled moving away.
"Go take your shower princess, I'll be out here if you need anything." He said winking. I fled to the bathroom, pretty sure my face had taken a deep red colour.
I closed the door behind me and leaned against it, letting out a breath. I undressed and headed for the shower stall.
I had a quick refreshing shower, stepping out and wrapping a fluffy towel around my body. I towel dried my hair and walked to the closet where I picked my sleepwear which consisted of a pair of pale pink short shorts and a tank top.
I made my way back to my bedroom, Jason was lounging on the chair, his jacket and boots discarded, a book in his hand and the plate of casserole perfectly balanced on his thigh as he ate another bite. I walked over to him and he looked up, placing the book and the plate aside, I let him pull me onto his thighs.
"You smell good." He whispered trailing his nose along my throat. "Scratch that, you always smell good."
"Good save" I giggled reaching over to grab the plate of casserole.
"Siobhan really knows how to make a mean casserole." He commented as I took a bite, I humed, nodding in agreement at his words. I scooped a bit of the casserole and lifted the spoon up to his lips, he leaned forward and opened his mouth and I fed him.
"I don't think I've ever had as much fun as I did today." I said taking another bite.
"I'm still shocked that you've never been to a fair before." He replied letting me feed him. I lifted my shoulder, letting it fall back, my attention on the plate on my lap.
"Well... my parents aren't exactly the fun kind and I don't think they would be caught dead in a place like that. Besides... I'm happy they didn't take me to the fair when I was younger, then it wouldn't have been as special as it was tonight." I felt his finger on my chin, he raised my head up until I was looking at him.
"I'm glad you had fun and I would be honoured to have more special moments with you." He said, his voice taking a serious tone. I smiled in gratitude and lifted the fork to his lips, he smiled and parted his lips.
We spoke till about 3 in the morning before crawling into bed and falling asleep wrapped in each other.
*******************
The sun shining on my face had me groaning, I opened my eyes, wondering why I had opened the blinds before we went to sleep. I ran my fingers through my hair before turning my face head to see Jason peacefully sleeping near me.
My heart warmed at the sight, he was on his stomach, his right arm bent and laying beneath his head while his left hand was... my eyes trailed over and I realised it was under my tank top, resting on my right boob to be specific.
I shook my head at his actions before turning slightly and examining him more. His hair had escaped his man bun and was covering half his face so all I could see was his pink perfect lips.
He had discarded his shirt during the night and the blanket was around his waist, exposing his firm and toned back muscles. I was tempted to run my fingers along the ridges but I didn't want to wake him up so I carefully removed his hand from my chest and got out of bed.
I tiptoed to my bathroom and brushed my teeth before walking back to the bedroom. I glanced at the clock. It was 10.30 and I knew Siobhan was going to be here around 12.00 meaning I had an hour and 30 minutes with Jason. With that in the back of my mind, I headed downstairs, carefully closing the door behind me and walked to the kitchen.
After yesterday, this least I could do was make him breakfast. I turned on the coffeemaker and grabbed a box of pancake mix. I got started on the mixing the pancake, humming a song I heard from Janice. I made a mental note to call her, then again I was meeting her today for the Founder's parade.
The kitchen soon smelled like a cafe, the scent of coffee and blueberry pancakes wafting out to other areas of the house. I switched off the stove after flipping the last one onto the second plate.
"That's a lot of pancakes." I let out a small scream at the sound of Mary's voice. Spinning around eyes wide, she looked confused, I on the other hand was terrified.
"What are you doing here?" I demanded, my heart slamming against my ribcage, fervently praying that Jason was still asleep and won't come down here.
"I left my purse here, so I came back to get it." She explained. "I'm sorry if I frightened you."
I nodded waving off her apology, I just wanted her to leave.
"It's fine." I replied forcing a smile. Her eyes moved to the two plates of pancakes and mugs of coffee. I followed her eyes.
"I want to surprise Siobhan, she's always cooking for me and taking care of me. It's the least I could do." I explained hating myself for lying but anything that would get her to leave, I was going to take it.
The questioning look in her eyes disappeared and a look of understand appeared, she smiled and nodded.
"That's very nice of you. I'll see you at the parade." She said. I smiled "okay. See you then." I replied and watched her leave. I sagged in relief when I heard the front door closing.
"Thank you God." I whispered. I turned to the breakfast and placed them on a tray together with some chopped fruits. Satisfied with how everything looked, I carried it out of the foyer to my room. I gently opened the door and walked in, kicking the door shut with my leg.
Jason was still asleep, in the same position I left him. I placed the tray on the table and walked over to him, straddling him. I leaned and brushed his hair aside, exposing his face. I leaned down and kissed his hairline. He didn't stir so I moved lower and pressed a kiss to his cheek then to the corner of his mouth, letting my fingers ghost over his biceps.
He stirred, letting a groan. "Mornin' Princess." He mumbled.
"Morning sleepyhead." I replied. He chuckled and I let myself fall to the other side of the bed, he opened his eyes and looked at me.
"You're super perky this morning." He said rolling onto his back. "Well... I slept well." I answered leaning over to kiss him, my hair falling over and surrounding us like a silky curtain.
"I can get used to this." He said when I pulled away. I laughed and sat up, "come on, I made breakfast." I said standing to get the tray, I placed it on the bed.
"You didn't have to Princess." He whispered sitting up. "I know but I wanted to." I replied watching him take a piece of chopped strawberry and tossing it into his mouth. I lifted my coffee mug and brought it to my lips, humming as the caffeine woke my tastebuds up.
We had breakfast, making small talk and exchanging kisses inbetween.
By the time we were done with breakfast, an hour had passed and Siobhan was going to be here in 30 minutes. I sighed watching as he walked out of the bathroom, dressed, his hair still wet from the shower he had taken.
"I'll see you at the parade." He said cupping my cheeks, I nodded not wanting the moment with him to end. We walked downstairs to the front door and after a quick kiss, I watched him leave.
I sighed closing the door behind me, I had to cover my lies so I quicky whipped up a batch of pancakes and a cup of coffee for Siobhan, writing a note telling her how much I loved and appreciated her and that I was heading over to Janice's house and I would see her at the parade.
I placed everything on the island and did the dishes before hurrying upstairs and making my bed. I had a shower and got dressed in blue skinny jeans and a black snug shirt, I grabbed the bag I used last night and slipped into a pair of comfortable shoes. I checked my reflection to make sure everything was perfect before I headed out.
The walk to Janice's house was a quick one and I was there five minutes after twelve. My phone buzzed and I unlocked it to see a message from Siobhan.
S-You are too precious Anna. I'll see you at the parade.
I felt bad about the circumstance that led to me making her pancakes but I pushed it to the back of my mind. In a month and a week, I won't have to sneak around with Jason. The thought made me smile. I pressed the doorbell and Janice opened the door, a smile on her face.
"Morning" she beamed pulling me in and closing the door. She pulled me to the stairs and I barely had enough time to say hi to her parents who just shook their heads at their daughter's antics. She shut her room door and spun to me.
"I need your help." She said shoving a pale blue gown and a navy blue one at my face. "Which one looks more I am the daughter of two of the most smartest people in North America and you should be damned lucky I chose to go to your university?" She asked.
What
"Uh... the navy blue." I said pointing to it. She stared at it before nodding and flopping onto her bed, I sat next to her.
"What's this about?" I asked. She sighed "A professor from Stanford is coming to the parade and well, I need to make a good impression." She explained.
"But... they already offered you an admission so you don't need to impress anyone." I replied.
"He is not just anyone. He is Professor Harry Maine, world renowned mathematician. This man is currently solving one of the 13 unsolved maths problems." She cried out.
"Hey... you'll be fine. I mean your CGPA speaks for you and you are a product of the two of the most intelligent people in the country and that's something to be proud of."
She cracked a smile "You're right, I can totally do this."
"Atta girl." I cheered hugging her.
"When's the parade starting?" I asked, she looked up at her clock.
"We should be heading to the venue." She said just as her mum knocked before poking her head into the room.
"You girls ready? We are about to head out." She notified us.
"We'll be right there." Janice said picking up the navy gown and making her way to her closet. She came back dressed in the smart casual dress that hugged her upper body before flaring out and stopping mid thigh. It had a sweetheart neckline with elbow length sleeves. She paired it with a black satchel bag and flats.
We made our way downstairs where her parents were waiting. We got into their black Range Rover and Mr. Richman drove towards the city centre. We were just in time as the parade was about to start, we found a place to park and got out to watch the parade. I looked around and spied some of our classmates. I smiled seeing Mary with her sister.
The parade consisted of floats from different notable businesses in Vermont. Janice and I danced to the songs being played as the floats passed by. As usual, The O'Malley Bank stole the show with its massive float, I could see some of father's employees on the float, smiling and waving at the public. The next float that drove by was Betty's, it was modest in size but it elicted a lot of cheer from the crowd.
My phone buzzed and I pulled it out of my bag, it was a text from Jason. I looked around but I couldn't see him, I decided to read the text.
J-Behind you, by the supermarket alley.
I frowned and turned around, my eyes widened when I saw him leaning against his truck, I waved at him smiling and he winked, smiling back. Janice nudging me had me turning to her.
"Hottie at 1 o'clock" she whispered into my ear, I looked in the direction and there was a young man standing there, he was dressed in dark blue jeans and a white shirt. He had glasses on, with wild hair that looked good on him. He was totally Janice's type and I could see the appeal but he wasn't Jason.
"He looks way older than us Jan" I whispered into her ear.
"But he looks really good." She groaned still looking at him. I rolled my eyes at her "You're a minor Jan and I am sure he is way older than 17."
"I'll be 18 in a month." She grumbled. "Good for you, till then he is off limits" I warned. She sighed "Yes mum"
We continued to watch the parade until all the floats passed, the last one conveying the Mayor and his wife.
"That was fun." Nicole commented as we walked back to the car, it was then I realised I had not seen Siobhan. I sent her a quick text as we got into the car.
"Professor Harry was a no show." Janice muttered rolling her eyes, still chuffed that she couldn't talk with wild hair guy.
"Actually, I think I see him." Mr. Richman said walking towards a blue Audi. I turned my attention to my phone waiting for Siobhan to text me back when Janice let out what sounded like a cross between gasping and choking.
I turned to see her but her eyes were glued on the window. I looked out and gasped when I saw Wild hair guy walking with Mr. Richman.
"Harry, it's nice to see you again." Nicole said hugging him. "It's nice to see you again Professor Richman" he replied. Nicole rolled her eyes "call me Nicole, Harry. We aren't in the academic environment."
She opened the back passenger door and all their eyes turned to us. I had recovered but Janice still had that fish out of water look. I nudged her and she let out a high pitched hi making me wince at how awkward it sounded.
"This is my daughter, Janice and her best friend Annalise." She introduced us. I smiled at him, reaching over a star struck Janice to shake his outstretched hand.
"It's nice to meet you Professor." I said, I couldn't believe he was a professor, he didn't look a day over 25, he must be really smart if he achieved such a feat at a young age. I had to nudge Janice harder to break her out of her daze. She coughed before reaching over to shake him.
"I...it's nice to meet y...you" she stuttered which said a lot because Janice never stuttered. Mr Richman and Professor Harry talked for a while before Nicole invited him for dinner, earning a barely restrained squeal from Janice which she disguised as a cough. They said their goodbyes and we drove off.
"Thanks for the ride home." I said to Mr. Richman as they parked outside the gate. "It's nothing dearie. Our regards to Siobhan." He said as I got out. I waved at them, making eye contact with Janice.
"Call me." I mouthed, she nodded eagerly, flashing me a grin as they pulled away. I headed into the house, checking my phone to see if Siobhan had called or texted me back but there was nothing there.
I closed the door behind me and made my way to the kitchen, it had been cleaned and there was a plate of chicken rice in the oven. I sat and dug into it, realizing how hungry I actually was.
The door bell ringing had me frowning, but I got up and made my way to the door, it was probably Siobhan but she had a key, or maybe she forgot her keys, she had forgotten it on several occasions. I unlocked the door and opened it about to tease her when my entire body went rigid, fear trickled down my spine as my eyes landed on Derek.
"Hello Princess."
