Terrence got down from his boss' car and walked straight to his house. Dexter immediately opened the door for him.
"You're a bit late," Dexter said as he entered the living room. It's almost eleven o'clock according to their big clock on the wall.
"Is Sheldon already sleeping?"
"Yes! He is quite upset."
"I know he will but I will speak to him tomorrow."
"So can I go home now?"
"You can stay if you like. It's already late to go home. We have one extra room next to the playroom."
"If okay for you. I like it too. I'm too lazy to drive now."
"By the way, what did you two eat for dinner?"
"What else? Your son forced me again to eat his favorite smashed cucumber salad swimming in balsamic vinegar." Terrence laughed looking at Dexter's facial expression like he is drinking vinegar at the moment.
"Okay, goodnight then." Terrence then headed towards Sheldon's room.
"By the way, if your car is in the garage, someone drives it back."
"Yeah, I saw it."
Dexter shook his head. He admires Terrence how he manages to raise Sheldon while busy at work. He is much better than other women out there.
Terrence kissed Sheldon on his forehead when he saw him quietly sleeping. "I love you my son Sheldon. You are Daddy's boy and no one can take you away from me. I will protect you." He pulled his duvet up to cover his chest and kissed him and left for his room.
"I want you to do the same as I asked you to do six years ago," Terrence called someone on his phone when he was already inside his room.
"Yes, you have to delete all the data that connected to Sheldon, especially what happened to me back then in Massachusetts."
"Yes! Don't leave any traces just like before. I need to protect my son."
"Okay bye. Thank you!"
The days passed and Terrence used to his daily routine. Drop Sheldon in school and he will go to work then pick him up from school after his work just today.
"Baby since today is Friday, we will go to buy groceries before going home as we have a cooking class tomorrow. I will teach you how to cook some simple recipes that you can do if ever I'm coming home late."
"Really Dad? But don't forget to buy my favorite......
"Cucumber!" They said it together and laughed as loud as they could inside their car.
After they bought their groceries they went home and since it's still early for dinner Terrence asked Sheldon to go out and make friends with other kids his age while he is putting up their groceries in their cupboards and preparing pieces of stuff for their dinner too.
Sheldon with his skateboard went to the playground just across from their home. He is sitting alone on a bench with mouth pouting and knitted eyebrows. Beside him is his skateboard while his arms are crossed on his chest. There are some kids about his age playing but he is not interested.
"They're acting like a baby. Hmph!" He thought.
Moments later while he was looking down, playing his hand on his skateboard, he saw a pair of shoes just stop in front of him. He lifted his head and took aback when he saw a handsome man with an impassive look standing in front of him. The man too was frozen awhile as he saw the kid in front of him like he was looking at his young self. He fluttered his eyes to think that he might have just made a mistake, but even as he shook his head there's no change on the kid's face.
"Is there something wrong with my face?" Sheldon asked him as he noticed how he froze and keep staring at his face.
"Oh hi! Why are you here? Why you're not playing with them?" The man said, talking about the kids playing.
"My Dad said, I will come here to make friends with kids of my age but I don't like his idea as those kids are acting like a baby." He is sulking.
"Oh! But you are still young. You still look like a baby." The man said but he was surprised when Sheldon raised his voice towards him.
"No! I am not a baby, I'm six years old."
"Okay fine. So you know how to skateboard."
"Of course I am. I am not going to take this skateboard with me if I don't know how to play, right?"
The man nodded as he agreed. "Do you want to play it with me?"
Sheldon's eyes widened and his face beaming with delight as soon as he heard what the man said. It's like he found a friend in him.
"Okay let's go." And they went together to a small skate park next to the playground.
They agreed that whoever can finish faster will be the winner. They had a little argument when they discussed who was going to hold the timer.
"If you're going to use your watch, there's a possibility that you're going to cheat me. So we better use my watch." Sheldon said the man chuckled.
"This kid is different. His mind is better than mine when I was his age."
"What if you're going to cheat me too? I don't want you to hold your watch either." The man said he doesn't want this kid to outsmart him.
"Okay fine. Let's put our watch together on that bench then."
"Good idea!"
And they played a few rounds until Sheldon heard his Dad calling him for dinner.
"Sheldon, it's dinner time."
"Oh, that's my Dad calling me for dinner. Do you want to come with me? I will introduce you to my Dad as my new friend."
"Sheldon! Sheldon!" Echoed repeatedly in the man's mind.
The kid pulled his hand towards the bungalow house across the playground.
"Is he Terrence's son?" The man thought.
"Dad, I'm home. I met a new friend." Sheldon removed his shoes and put them on their shoe rack and his skateboard at the side.
"Oh good if you met a new......" Terrence was surprised when he saw who his son was talking about as his new friend. "Mr. Madrigal?"
"Daddy, do you know each other?"
"Ah yes, baby. He is my new boss."
Sheldon glared at Terrence as he doesn't like to be called “baby” in front of others.
"Ah sorry, Sheldon!"
"Ahm! Mr. Madrigal, Sir, have a seat." Terrence gestured him to sit on the couch.
"Ah no worries, I'm not taking so long. I....." Denver didn't finish what he wanted to say when Sheldon intervened.
"Mr. Madrigal, you can join me and my Dad for dinner." But in his mind, he wanted to know more about his Dad's boss. "You upset me when you asked my Daddy for overtime. Hmph! You cannot take my Daddy away from me." Then he smiles sweetly at Denver, the latter gives him a thin smile as he responds to him.
"Sheldon, Mr. Madrigal needs to go home. His family might be waiting for him for dinner."
"No, it's alright Mr. Saavedra. I can stay."
"Friends?" Sheldon said.
"Friends!"
And they stare at each other like they have a staring battle with different thoughts against each other that only they know. Terrence just shook his head and left to prepare their dinner.
"You can't outsmart me, kid. I'm Denver!"
"I'm the biggest threat to your handsome face, old man. You can't take my Dad away from me. I will do everything to defeat you."
"Sheldon, Mr. Madrigal, the dinner is ready."
"Yes Daddy, we're coming."
Terrence seat opposite of Sheldon while he gave the seat at the end of the table to Denver.
"Mr. Madrigal, you try my favorite. Smashed cucumber salad." Sheldon, as he usually does to their guests, offered his favorite foods.
"This is my favorite too."
"Really?" Sheldon exclaimed in surprise. "How about xiaolongbao and ramen, don't tell me your favorite too?" Sheldon's eyes widened as he was waiting for Denver's answer.
"Hmmm.."
"What?! Daddy, did you hear that? My favorite is your boss's favorite too."
"I heard it was Sheldon. Eat quietly please."
" Wow! We're meant to meet Mr. Madrigal." Sheldon almost whispered to Denver.
"Sheldon, your mouth is full."
Denver quietly eats while observing the father and son in front of him. His curiosity strikes him but he restrains himself from asking.
"Ahm Mr. Madrigal, if you don't mind how did you meet my son?" Terrence asked but he wanted to know why, of all places, Denver came here. He knows they owned the whole place but he cannot find an exact reason.
"I came here to ask you for overtime this weekend at my house. There's bidding that will be held next month and I want you to help me with it."
Since they looked at each other they didn't notice the smile flashed on Sheldon's face as something was playing in his mind.
"Ahern! Mr. Madrigal, can I go with Daddy too?" He asked.
"Sheldon!" Terrence gave him a warning look.
"No worries Mr . Saavedra, he can go with you."
"See Daddy." Terrence just shrugged his shoulders as he was defeated by his son's smartness.
"I will show you my collection of skateboards, Legos, helmets as I love motorcycles."
"You can race too?"
"I am. I won before but since I'm busy doing business I quit."
Terrence was starting to feel out of place as the two were already busy talking about their same interests. But at the back of his mind, there's something he felt he couldn't understand. Seems like giving him a warning not to let his son get too close with his boss. He looked at his boss more than Sheldon. They're happy with each other.
Before Denver went home, Sheldon brought him to his playroom and showed him his collection of toys. Legos, skateboards, remote control F1 cars, and even remote-controlled motorcycles. Denver is amazed by so many coincidences and similarities he has with Terrence's son.
"Who is your mommy?" Denver suddenly asked Sheldon.
"I don't have a mommy. I mean real mommy aside from my godmother Annie who I called her mommy."
Denver was about to ask more when he heard Terrence was coming.
"Sheldon, it's already evening. Mr . Madrigal needs to go home."
"That's right Sheldon, tomorrow it's my turn to show you my collections."
"I'm looking forward to meeting Mr .Madrigal." And they did their fist bump that according to Sheldon it's their means of greetings.
The next day Saturday, as they agreed Terrence will do overtime at Denver's residence. They're about to go out when they heard a doorbell.
"Good morning Mr . Saavedra. Mr . Madrigal asked me to pick you up." James said as soon as he opened the main door.
"Aaah...okay!" Then he called Sheldon. The kid then runs to him with his laptop bag.
"I'm here Dad."
James who was standing just outside the door, widened his eyes in surprise when he saw Sheldon.
"Hello!" Sheldon greeted James.
"Hi!" James responds but his eyes averted in a different direction. He even tilted his head and looked at Sheldon again.
While on their way to Denver's residence Sheldon noticed that James kept staring at him in the rearview mirror.
" Uncle James, is there anything wrong with my face?
"Ah, nothing, I just find you cute." James lied.
After a few more minutes of driving, they arrived at a villa.
"Is this where Mr. Madrigal lives?" Sheldon asked.
"Yes!" James then quickly got down to open the car door for the father and son.
The butler of the villa, Benjamin, is waiting for them at the entrance.
"This way, Mr. Saavedra." James leads them to the entrance.
Benjamin's eyes widened as he saw their guests but his eyes focused on the young one.
"The people here are so weird. Why are they looking at me like they saw a ghost? Hmmm, I must know the answer before we leave here later." Sheldon thought.
"Mr. Saavedra hi! I'm Benjamin, the butler." He introduced himself. "And you baby, what's your name?"
"I'm not a baby. And I'm Sheldon." Sheldon quickly bowed his head as he introduced himself.
"Hello, Mr. Benjamin!" Terrence greeted him too but his eyes were roaming around.
"Mr. Madrigal will be here soon so you can have a seat first." Benjamin offered them to sit on the couch in the big living room.
While Benjamin left for the kitchen they heard someone from the stairs coming. The father and son looked up and they saw that same face with no expression coming down looking at both of them.
"Good morning Mr. Madrigal!" Terrence stood up and greeted his boss.
"Good morning. Have a seat." Then he turned to Sheldon who was busy taking out his laptop.
"Hi, buddy!"
"Oh great! I love Mr. Madrigal. We're buddies." And he got up and did a fist bump to Denver.
"So are we going to start now Mr. Madrigal?"
"Ah yes! Yes! To the study room."
"How about me?" Sheldon followed them.
"Oh kid, after I tell your Dad his work I'm going to tour you around to see my collections as I promised," Denver replied ruffling the kid's hair.
"Do you hear that, Daddy?"
Terrence rolled his eyes. "Oh yeah!"
Denver then brought Terrence to his study room and let him scan the files that they need to study for the bidding.
"This is a construction bidding so we need to do a proposal, and submit for the undertaking. This is a big project so we need to win this."
"I will do my best, Sir."
"I'll come back later, I need to fulfill my promise to Sheldon." And he turned around to get him but he didn't see the kid. "Well, I think he's gone for the tour. I'll go find him."
"Okay, Mr. Madrigal," Terrence said and start to do his job.
Denver then left to look for Sheldon.
