I Want Nothing but a Divorce

Sure enough, the moment Anna finished speaking, Charles’s face darkened even further. He took a step toward her, and seeing his approach, Anna didn’t wait. She turned on her heel and headed straight for the parking lot. But just as she opened the car door, it was slammed shut by a strong hand. She looked up, meeting Charles’s icy gaze, tinged with suspicion. “Still have something to say?” she asked, raising an eyebrow with a slight smile. “What game are you playing at?” Charles's voice was low, magnetic, and thick with the authority of a man used to being in charge. In the past, Anna had loved hearing him speak, as if every word he uttered was a note of music, drawing her in. But Charles had always been stingy with his words. Even when he spoke to her, he used as few as possible, leaving her longing for more. “My grandfather gave you 5% of the company’s shares. I’m willing to buy them back at the current market value; there’s no need for you to gift them to me.” As he spoke, his eyes were fixed on Anna’s calm expression, searching for any sign of hidden emotions. But whether she was concealing them well or had truly given up, her face remained unreadable. Charles swallowed his frustration and continued, “I’m not going to leave you empty-handed. What’s yours will remain yours. You don’t have to pretend to be generous with me.” Anna couldn’t help but laugh at his arrogance. She had to admit, the way he always thought he knew her intentions was amusing, if not infuriating. “Charles , I’ve already signed the divorce papers. I even waited at the district court for you to finalize it. If you hadn’t stood me up, we’d be divorced by now. Do you really think I’m pretending? Pretending for who? For you?” Her eyes locked onto his dark, brooding gaze as she chuckled, “I’ve been by your side for a year, and it didn’t change a thing. Do you really think that acting ‘generous’ now will suddenly change your mind? Are you that insecure?” For a moment, Charles was at a loss for words. It was true—once he had decided to divorce Anna, nothing she did, even giving up everything she owned, would change his mind. So...she was serious about wanting a divorce? Even more eager than he was? She actually waited at the district court first thing in the morning? For a brief second, a voice in his mind tried to deny it, but it was quickly silenced. The evidence was right in front of him, and yet it was still hard to accept. “So...you really want to divorce me? And you’re not asking for anything?” His usually cold voice betrayed a hint of raspiness, as if the question itself was painful to articulate. From the beginning, he had never believed that Anna married him for nothing. But now she was giving everything back to him, shattering the certainty he’d held onto. "Yes, I want nothing. I just want a divorce." Charles’s cold, dismissive words from her previous life still echoed in her ears, each memory slicing through her heart. Every time she thought about it, it felt like another piece of her heart was being torn apart, like a wound that would never heal. Sometimes, when you cut ties, it’s painful, but at least there’s a chance to heal. It’s better than having old wounds ripped open by new betrayals. Those kinds of wounds never heal, they just fester and become a permanent scar. Anna spoke the word "divorce" with a casual indifference, as if discussing something as insignificant as the weather. Seeing her like this, Charles struggled to acknowledge the growing panic that had been gnawing at him since she signed the divorce papers. His face remained impassive, but his eyes darkened, like a brewing storm ready to engulf Anna’s calm demeanor and shatter it completely. “Those shares were meant to give you some security when you married me, to ensure you had some leverage...just in case I mistreated you...” She paused, choosing her words carefully before continuing. “You might not have loved me, but you weren’t cruel enough to leave me destitute. Now that we’re divorcing, I want a clean break. Those shares don’t need to stay with me.” Even though the 5% of shares represented billions in assets, Anna spoke as if they were meaningless to her. In fact, Charles could sense her eagerness to sever ties completely. “As for the divorce settlement, I don’t need that either. It’s yours, and since we’re divorcing, let’s do it properly, right, CEO Charles Bennett?” Her tone was flat, devoid of any emotion, and she even started addressing him as “CEO Charles,” making him feel an unfamiliar sense of rejection. The more detached she became, the more Charles’s unease grew, tightening his chest. He couldn’t understand why he felt this way, but the discomfort was becoming suffocating, as if the walls were closing in on him. Anna noticed Charles remained silent, his face darkened, so she checked her watch and frowned slightly. “We have less than an hour. Let’s go, or we’ll be out of time.” With that, she got into the car and slammed the door shut. Meanwhile, Bennett Global Enterprises was in an uproar. The CEO was really getting a divorce? The lady herself confirmed it, so it must be true. And didn’t the CEO follow her out? It has to be true. Regardless of what Charles thought, ambitious female employees started seeing this as their golden opportunity. After all, who wouldn’t want to catch the eye of a handsome, wealthy man with a powerful family background? If they succeeded, they’d become the wife of a billionaire CEO, a position many could only dream of. Hannah Wilson, in particular, was so excited that she forgot about Anna’s earlier reprimand. Out of all the women at Bennett Global Enterprises, she had been the one Charles took to events, giving her the best chance. If she became the CEO’s wife, what would Anna be to her then? Absolutely nothing!
