Daisy.
Checking the time on my wristwatch, I sighed when I realized that it was just 6PM. I got off the couch and started getting ready for the new job.
I needed everything I could lay my hands on and this wasn’t just anything, the pay is decent, even more than enough to pay for my father’s medical bills which was what I needed the money for in the first place.
“It’s just a job, Daisy, you can do it.” I said to myself as I got out of the house. Everywhere was pitch dark and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t scared or nervous.
What if I got rejected? What if they found someone else to fill that position?
Sighing, I shoved all the intrusive thoughts to the back of my mind before filling it up with the thought of my father and how this was supposed to help assist my father.
I just can’t wait to see him hale and hearty.
The street was filled up with people whose main jobs were to work at night and ignoring the catcalls from the men I came across, I flagged down a taxi and got in.
The road the driver took was foreign to me and it wasn’t until the cab stopped that I realized where I was going wasn't a house but a warehouse.
It looked creepy, clearly abandoned and a tingling sixth sense kept telling me to turn back and run. The cab was still there and it wasn’t too late for me to ask the driver to take me back to where he’d picked me up from.
While the urge to turn back and run was strong, the curiosity to go in the warehouse and check what was going on in there was stronger. So, shoving my dark thoughts to the deepest, darkest part of my mind, I paid the man and waved him off.
What is this place? Why was the address sent to me?
I took steps closer and with each one I took, my chest tightened, my breathing decreased and it felt as though I’d completely forgotten how to breathe.
Holding my breath and closing my eyes, I managed to get to the entrance and a voice in my head reminded me that it still wasn’t too late to sprint back home.
‘It’s just a job, Daisy. Instead of dying doing something you have no idea about, turn back and leave or you’d never have the chance to help your father.’ The voice was insistent and it grew louder as I made my way in.
Shaking my head, I knew they were my fear speaking for me. So what if it looks creepy? So what if the pay’s suspicious? 10 thousand dollars isn’t something that I’m willing to let go of just like that.
If the worst comes to worse, I have my phone, I’d call for help but I felt like nothing could go wrong. Taking in a deep breath, I stepped in and as soon as that happened I felt a strong arm on my shoulder.
Fuck!
I looked around but there was nowhere else to run, I was surrounded by masked men and the way I came in from was blocked already. Garnering the strength I had left in me, I put up a fight but I was no match for them.
This is what happens when you get curious. This is what happens when you don’t listen to that voice in your head that keeps warning you against making a decision.
Breathing heavily, my chest heaved and I knew fighting even harder was useless, I was overpowered already. Before I knew what was going on, before I could even blink, one of the men had lifted me on his shoulder.
“Let me go!” I screamed at the top of my lungs in hopes that a saviour would be nearby but no one came, I should’ve known that something like this was bound to happen.
No one should be willing to pay that much for menial jobs.
“I have my—“ I hadn't finished speaking when another knocked my phone right out of my hand. Another stupid move! I see enough movies to know that you should never announce your move, how did I get this stupid.
The man carrying me finally came to a halt and just when I thought the worst was over, just when I was expecting a huge man to show up in front of me like I always saw in those movies, my eyes opened to an even darker horror.
What the f**k is this place? Why are there so many girls here?
My vision blurred, bells rang in my head and I fell forward, it didn’t take long for me to know that I’ve been drugged. How did I not notice it?
The feel of cold water on my face and body jolted me awake. I had no idea how long I'd been out but I hoped that what I saw was going to be a dream.
My eyes fluttered open and it was indeed real, my hands and legs had been tied together already and not just me but the other ladies around were suffering the same fate.
The men around grabbed us, his touch was the most disgusting thing I’ve ever felt in my life and it was taking all that I had in me not to barf as he put a blindfold on my eyes.
Everywhere became dark and soon we started moving, we were hauled into what seemed like a van with the other girls screaming and crying hysterically.
The sound of a gunshot caused everywhere to become silent at once and the only sound that could be heard was the heavy breathing of heavy girls, the blasting music from the van and the sound of cars.
It soon came to a halt and everyone was forced out of the car, we walked for a while before finally stopping and it wasn’t until the blindfold was lifted that I realized we were in a room with red lights.
“Put these on and be good little girls.” One of the men said as he threw clothes at everyone. Confused, I looked around for a way to escape and for information.
I needed to know what was going to happen so I would be able to scale my desperation to escape.
“What do you think?” I heard one of them whisper as I changed my clothes, his eyes not leaving me as he spoke with his friend, “how much do you reckon we’ll get on that one?” He asked and the other one shrugged.
“A lot,” he responded, “she’s got assets and I’m sure cartels are going to want to pay a lot of money for her, there'll be a lot of fights but whoever pays the most gets her.” He finished.
“She doesn’t look like much though.” The other one said and his friend only shrugged.
“We’ll see.”
Cartel? Money? What the hell is going on?
My eyes widened when the realization of what was going to happen if I didn’t leave dawned on me. They’re going to sell us to a group of cartels, mafias.
I have to leave, it’s now or never.
Desperately looking around for a way to escape, my hopes were dashed when not only was my movement monitored because of the trouble I’d caused for them when I first came in but also there were men at each entrance.
Each escape route I could think of had men planted there.
“Number 602, it’s your turn.” A voice called authoritatively and it wasn’t until one of the girls pointed it out that I knew I was number 602.
My legs shook as I stood, my movements felt heavy but a part of me still held out hope. I took a look at myself in the mirror and I shrugged, despite wearing a ridiculously short dress that brought out all my shapes, I knew no one would want to pay any money to buy me.
I had under eye bags due to the immense stress I’ve gone through and establishing that no one would want me, I got on the stage.
Smiling to myself and happy because of the fact that I was going to be going home since I was practically useless, I went back to the room and waited for one of the men to hurl insults at me but all my hopes were dashed when one of them grabbed me.
We went to a different room and I heard him talking to the girl in charge that I was supposed to be treated with care.
“The Capo of New Haven town owns her already.” He finished and my eyes widened in horror.
What?!
