Impossible

Jane's POV It would be my birthday the next day. It wasn't as if I was looking forward to my birthday, but then I should, right? I would be finally getting my wolf and then I could say I was an adult. Luna Hilda and I had talked about my eighteenth birthday days before she died. She had told me that a pleasant surprise awaited me on my eighteenth birthday. I was sure she had intended to surprise me on my birthday, hoping she would survive childbirth. ‘A penny for your thoughts,’ Beta Shane said coming to stand beside me. ‘My thoughts are worthless Beta Shane,' I said as I continued to spread the clothes on the lines. ‘Don't say that, Luna. Your thoughts are worth millions,’ Beta Shane said then bent down to give me clothes from the bowl. ‘Don't call me Luna. I am not one,’ I said glaring at him before collecting the clothes from him. ‘Your birthday is tomorrow. You will be officially eighteen. Within the next few weeks, you will be addressed as Luna Jane. I might as well start now,’ Beta Shane said shrugging. ‘Please don't. When is the Alpha returning?’ I asked wishing Alpha Jason would just have reason to stay wherever he was for years. ‘He will be returning tomorrow evening. So we can as well have a party before he returns,’ Beta Shane said winking at me. ‘I can't risk death Beta Shane. Hilda needs me,’ I said then continued spreading the clothes. ‘This house has a dryer and you know that. Why do you keep sun-drying clothes? And you do that only when the Alpha is away,' Beta Shane asked me. ‘It was a thing Luna Hilda and I enjoyed doing. We sometimes sat in the shade and watched the clothes dry. But ever since her death, the Alpha had not allowed me to do this. That is why I do it whenever he is not around. It makes me feel as if Luna Hilda was close by,’ I explained. ‘You will be alright Jane. Trust the process,’ Beta Shane said laying a comforting hand on my shoulder. ‘I wish that tomorrow, I will meet my mate and he can take me away from here,’ I said sadly. ‘Even if you meet your mate tomorrow Jane, keep it a secret. Alpha Jason might as well kill him to keep his words to Luna Hilda,’ Beta Shane said and I shivered. I was sure Alpha Jason could easily justify killing my mate if he found out that I met my mate. He would say he had to keep his words to make me his Luna. ‘Thank you, Beta Shane,’ I said, smiling at him. ‘You are welcome. I will be in the Alpha's study. I need to get some papers done.’ ‘Would you be needing anything?’ I asked. ‘If I need anything, I will call Annette to get it. Thanks anyway,’ Beta Shane said, and I nodded in acknowledgment before he left. Annette, the poor girl had suffered throat pain for two days from how hard Alpha Jason squeezed at her throat. He would have killed her, I suddenly trembled from the fact that I would have been the cause of Annette's death. Luna Hilda had told me that Alpha Jason himself erected the lines with which she used to sun dry clothes for her. I never believed that someone like that would have the capability to be that cold and heartless. I spread the last of the clothes on the lines, then returned to the nursery to check on baby Hilda. She raised her hands and clapped happily as I entered the room. She kept looking more and more like Luna Hilda as she grew. Her smile was perfectly Luna Hilda’s smile. ‘I wish I could just run away with you to a place that will be safe for the both of us, Hilda,' I said, then kissed her lightly on the head as I held her in my hands. I closed my eyes as I pictured Luna Hilda standing close to us right there in the nursery. I opened my eyes and wiped my tears. I had promised myself not to mourn what was lost. Throughout the day, I was walking around the house dreamily. It was as if I was mourning Luna Hilda more than I used to. I kept feeling as if she was near. I became more sensitive to sounds, and my feelings were everywhere. Stephanie, General Leo’s mate, came to see baby Hilda that evening, so I confided in her. I told her how I was feeling and that I already had a headache from wandering around dreamily. ‘I guess it is your wolf that is getting antsy,’ Stephanie had said. ‘What do you mean? I don't even have my wolf yet,’ I said frowning deeply. ‘By midnight you will get your wolf. Your wolf will not just appear. I am sure that your wolf is gradually awakening that is why you are feeling the way you are,’ Stephanie said. ‘I hope my wolf will be strong enough to help me escape from this hell hole when it is time,’ I mumbled but Stephanie heard me. ‘What did you say?’ She asked looking at me with a frown. ‘Nothing important. I was just mumbling to myself,’ I said. ‘I heard you clearly, Jane. Don't even try to run away from Jason. He will hunt you down and you will only be putting others around you in trouble. You saw what he did to Annette because she didn't stop you from going outside? Imagine if she had helped you run away from the pack instead,’ Stephanie said folding her hands on her chest and raising a brow at me. I shivered at that imagination. Alpha Jason himself had told me exactly what he would do to me and anyone who helped me escape. I decided that I was going to just take Hilda and run but I just came to the realization that I would be putting the girls working at the Alpha's house at a disadvantage. ‘But Steph, I can't stay with someone who treats me like s**t,’ I said as tears welled up in my eyes at the realization that I would be endangering innocent people's lives if I ran. ‘Not for long,’ Stephanie said confusing me. ‘What do you mean by that?’ I asked her. She smiled slowly as if she had a mischief in mind before saying, ‘What I am saying is that Jason won't be treating you like s**t for long if you let me help you.’ ‘If you can help me, why haven't you done it all this while?’ I asked glaring at her. ‘I was waiting for you to turn eighteen. Luna Hilda made me and my mate promise to take care of you and your mate. I will not go back on my promise to her,’ Stephanie said. ‘What do you want me to do or should I say what do you think I should do?’ I asked. ‘You are just going to keep being your innocent self and do exactly whatever I ask you to do,’ Stephanie said and I nodded. ‘I will do whatever you want me to do. I want Hilda to grow up in an environment that is not hostile,’ I said. ‘Anyway, Leo gave me his credit card to take you out on a shopping for your birthday. So you and little Hilda are going out with me tomorrow. Let's say this is also a belated first birthday shopping for little Hilda,’ Stephanie said smiling. After Stephanie left that evening, I was so happy that I almost couldn't eat dinner. For the first time since Luna Hilda died, someone was taking me shopping. Beta Shane had been shopping for us whenever we needed anything. Not for once had Alpha Jason allowed me to go out with Beta Shane to shop for what we needed. Something woke me during the night and I sat up in bed. I checked the clock on my nightstand stand and it was some minutes after one o'clock. I wondered what it was that woke me, then I realized that there was pain in my stomach. I stood up but fell back on the bed. I suddenly felt so cold that my fingers and toes felt numb. I tried to shout but my voice was stuck in my throat. A pain started in my chest as if someone was pressing down with all of their strength on my chest. Within a minute, my chest began to contract and the pain became almost unbearable. I put all my energy into standing up, but I only fell on the ground, groaning in pain. I tried standing from the floor but I couldn't as black dots covered every part of the room. The fear of dying and leaving baby Hilda to suffer gripped my heart and brought tears to my eyes. No matter how many times I blinked the black dots kept getting bigger. Seeing that I couldn't fight the pain anymore, I gave in and passed out. When I came around again, I was still alone in the room but instead of being faced up, I was faced down. I tried getting up but I staggered. I opened my eyes and tried to use my hands to push myself up and that was when I realized they were not hands but furs. I wanted to scream but what came out of my mouth was a growl. I closed my eyes and calmed myself down. I opened my eyes and walked towards the mirror in the room. I couldn't believe my eyes at what I saw. Standing right before me was an immaculately white wolf with no other color on the fur. Only the snort was different. I closed my eyes then counted to ten and reopened it. I was surprised to see that it was still the same wolf that I saw. White wolves do not exist. They extinct many years ago. We only heard of them from older people. ‘Hello, Jane. I am Juana, your wolf,’ the wolf in the mirror said. ‘It is not possible. White wolves do not exist,’ I said to the wolf. ‘We are the last of our kind, Jane; that is why we must procreate,’ my wolf said. ‘If you want me to procreate with a cold-hearted male like Jason, then it is not going to happen. So you should tell me that our mate is on the way here,’ I said. ‘We need a strong male like an Alpha, Jane,' my wolf said and I became angry and growled at the mirror. My head began to swim and before I could process anything further. I passed out again.
