Sawyer
“I’m leaving!” I yelled up the stairs to let everyone know and of course, not one peep and that is when I remembered, I was alone in the house because they left fifteen minutes ago all because I was running late, really late. “I need sleep.” I groaned to myself, running out of the house to the waiting Uber about ready to head to my first stop of the day. “I also need a damn car.”
“I’m so sorry I’m late.” I said panting as I enter Fitz’s office, “This is definitely not a good first impression.” The damn Uber didn’t know what he was doing. How hard was it to follow directions? And how is it possible to get lost and spend thirty minutes for a fifteen minute drive?
A middle aged man with dark brown hair and thick black rimmed glasses stood up and grinned and I swear, I felt his eyes go over my body, making me shiver and not the good kind, “It’s perfectly okay. Please have a seat.” He motioned with his hand to the chair in front of him.
Closing my eyes and counting to ten, I walked over and sat down. Damn, his grin really gave me the heeby jeebies. “Thank you.”
“So, let’s get this started.” He pulled out the file that had my name plastered in the corner and he pulled out the needed documents, “So…this is the first step.” And that started the hour long meeting.
I walked out of his office a bit more defeated as I stood in the corner and waited for my Uber to take me to the diner, defeated because I wasn’t sure how I was going to pay for his services. Typing away on my phone and sending a message to Aiden with the update, I suppressed the tears as a notification came up on my phone telling me my Uber was cancelled. “This cannot be happening to me.” I groaned as I turned around and ran right into someone’s hard chest. My bag came flying off my shoulder, papers flying out of my bag and scattering everywhere, “You have to be freaken kidding me!” I yelled out, dropping to my knees, trying to gather all my papers when I saw hands in front of me, trying to help me and a box on the ground that smelt amazing.
“I am so sorry.” A deep husky voice spoke in front of me, “I should have been paying attention to where I was going.” I tried to ignore the soft tingles I felt hearing that voice. It was soothing and protective but I couldn’t think about that right now. I had places to be.
“Yeah, you should have. And thanks to you, I’m going to be even more late.” I shoved everything in my bag that was in my hands and stood up and straightened myself out, but I ended up stumbling, losing my balance. His hands grabbed my arms to steady me and it was like a weird sensation of warmth and tingles flowed through my body, something I have never felt before and it was amazing. I looked up and met the eyes of the most gorgeous man I have ever seen. His dark brown hair was styled just right and he had the right amount of scruff. His piercing blue eyes looked right into my soul. Dressed in the most perfect black suit with dark red tie, you can see how his suit fit over his muscles and I couldn’t help but take in his gentle smile. I wanted to run my fingers through his hair, just to touch him. I felt my lady bits tingle at the sight of him as I imagined all the dirty things we could do.
What the hell is wrong with me? I never thought like that, even about my ex.
“Hey, you okay?” he asked as he dipped his head a bit to meet me at eye level. He stood at an easy six foot or damn close to it. I shook my head and stepped out of his arms, putting some distance between us because I had a very strange urge to jump on him and wrap my legs around his waist.
It’s been way too long since I’ve been with a man and toys just don’t cut it anymore.
“You should be more careful and shouldn’t be touching people you don’t know. Now, if you excuse me, I’m already late to work.” I snapped as I walked away. I needed to walk away because something was different about him. I wanted to desperately keep talking to him.
It was those eyes. You could tell just by looking at them he was the kind of person that could keep someone safe, loved, treasured. Something I don’t deserve. I can’t bring anyone into my life, at least, not right now.
It’s me against the world, at least the part that follows me.
I walked away from the most handsome man I ever seen because the reaction my body had to his simple touch scared the crap out of me. Without looking back, I sped walk the five blocks to the diner putting all thoughts about Mr. Blue eye hotness in the back of my head because right now, I do not have time to think about anyone else. I ran into the door, panting. Damn this is not my day.
“You’re late.” The manager on duty called out to me.
“I know I’m so sorry. My meeting ran late and then my uber cancelled on me and…”
“No excuses. You need to stay late and make up the time. Sections two and four are yours.”
“But I need to leave by three.”
“And I need you here on time. No excuses. Let’s go.” He snapped and walked into his office. If only I could just stab him with my pen I would be happy, but alas, I don’t because I unfortunately need this job. That is, until and hopefully Locke calls me.
Today has to be one of the worst days I’ve had in a while, but my thoughts keep going back to that blue eyed man that took my breath away. With me running late because I couldn’t find my work shoes, being late to the meeting with Fitz, which, mental note, I may need to find a new lawyer because he is kind of creepy, the meeting with Mr. Gorgeous, and now this? Being forced to stay late because I was thirty minutes late only give me thirty minutes to get to the stadium where they are holding the sports camp and knowing my luck, I’ll miss out on getting there on time.
I put myself in the zone and started by going to the first table and taking their order, “Hi, my name is Sawyer and I’ll be taking care of you today. What can I get you to drink…”
It’s decided. Tomorrow, I am skipping my run. I’ve been running so much today it’s ridiculous. Actually, I might just skip runs forever. I went to order an Uber and realized my phone was broken from when I ran into Mr. Gorgeous. Yeah, I guess that’s what I’ll call him. But anyways, I couldn’t call the Uber so I ran twenty minutes to the stadium and ran right through the front door to the reception desk.
“Hi! Welcome to Sanders Sports Stadium.” The beautiful woman behind the desk said, “I’m Sadie. How can I help you?”
“Am I too late to hand in the application for the sports camp?” I huffed out, trying to catch my breath.
“You are right on time. I was about to drop them off in about five minutes.”
“Perfect.” I opened my bag and went through the papers that were shoved in there and my heart rate started to pick up. Panicking, I fell to my knees and dumped everything out, opening up every paper I have, most of them from the lawyer. “No no no no this cannot be happening…”
“Is everything okay miss?”
“Do you have an extra application? Mine is missing.” I stood up and asking, trying to hide the tears forming. “Please, I promised my nephew I would get him signed up.”
“I’m so sorry ma’am. We don’t have any extra applications. They are given out through the schools.” She stood there and grinned. GRINNED. I already hate this girl.
“But…I…. please…I am literally begging you.” The tears started to form and I tried so hard to hold them in.
“I am so sorry. I wish I could help. But I need to get these to the office for them to go through. I do hope you have a wonderful weekend.” She gave me a sad smile and grabbed her folder and walked away. I swear, I thought I heard her chuckle.
I really don’t know what else could go wrong today. I don’t know what else to do. I promised Miles and I hate breaking promises. With my head down, I walked into the nearest cell phone store and paid out the ass for a new phone because let’s just add the icing on top of the cake. My new phone started to ring, telling me it was a facetime call.
“Aiden.” I said quickly, wiping the tears from my eyes as I walked home in the Texas heat, “I miss you.”
“Hey sis. How is everything? Did you get everything settled?”
“With the lawyer, not exactly.” I took my brother in. He looked good even with the dessert behind him, but I would never admit that. “You need to shave. You look gross.”
He shook his head and laughed, “Yeah, I’ve been told. Hey, listen, did Miles catch you up on what I said?”
“Something about your tour getting cut short?”
“Yeah. I should find out more soon but fingers crossed. You okay?” he asked as his face softened, “You look like something is on your mind.”
“I’m fine.”
“Sawyer…don’t. You know I can read you like a book.” I heard some noise in the background of his phone and it was snatched out of his hands, “Hey give that back!”
“Look at you beautiful.” And all I could do was smile and roll my eyes, “How is it every time we talk, you get more and more gorgeous?”
“Hi Scanlon.”
“So, your brother here said I could shack up with you guys when we get home, and when we do, how about I take you out on that date? From what I’ve heard…”
“Dude, that’s my sister. Off limits and back off before I take back you staying with me. Not my fault you forgot to tell your landlord about the tour and lost your place.” Aiden smacked him in the back of his head and I threw mine back and laughed. “Don’t listen to him. Sawyer, whatever you’re going through, you can do it. I know this is hard but you have a good support system. Ava and Sara will be there for you and the kids no matter what and I will be home as soon as I can. Plus you got the whole gang there, you know that. Hang in there, baby sis. But I gotta go. I love you.”
“I love you too.”
And for the first time in a while, I felt hopeful, that is, until I walked into the house and saw my nephew sitting in front of the TV playing NHL 22 on the PlayStation. So, how do you go up to your eight year old nephew and tell him you failed him…again.
