Battery Operated Boyfriend

“Cousin, you look lovely,” Mari said as she stood from her seat at the table by the window. She looked beautiful, as usual. Her platinum blonde curls were perfectly styled to the point that one didn’t want to touch her out of fear of messing something up. Her lips were lined in a soft pink to match her floral summer dress. She even had the fake celebrity smile down pat. Yeah, you don’t fool me for a second sister. “Mari,” I replied as she kissed my cheeks in greeting. I didn’t return the favour. Who does she think she is? We aren’t French. “Mari, why don’t you show Miranda what we have been discussing?” My mother chirped in from behind me. She pushed past me and took a seat next to Mari, who bent over to remove a lever arch file from her bag. “Good lord,” I gasped in surprise, “please tell me that file is for school too.” “Don’t be silly,” she giggled, “it’s only for the ceremony and party. I believe in being thorough. I can teach you if you’d like?” She placed her hand on my arm and I felt every muscle in my body tense. “Don’t waste your time Mari, you know Miranda is too lazy for all the effort that goes into research,” my mother laughed. It was a sound that easily filled me with revulsion and rage. “I know how to research and take notes, thank you,” I replied, pulling my arm out from under her hand. “I do, however, reserve the effort for things that actually matter,” I added. “Is that why you never had a ‘coming of age’ ceremony?” Mari asked, even though she already knew the reason. She was part of that reason, after all. “Miranda preferred to become a woman at the back of a car instead of doing it the proper way,” my mother stated. “Enough! I am not going to waste my time only sitting and listening to your insults. I have much better things to do.” I stood from my seat, my palms flattened on the marble surface of the table we were seated around. “What could possibly be more important than the biggest day of your loving cousin’s life?” my mother challenged, narrowing her eyes. “Let me see...” I trailed off with my finger placed on my chin for dramatic effect, “just about anything else.” I looked them in their eyes and continued, “I am to be the leader of this pack, the Alpha Female, and not your party planner. Tell me if there is something you need from me, but don’t waste my time.” “Miranda, sit down!” my mother exclaimed, “I am still your mother and Luna of this pack, and I will see to it that the responsibility of leading our pack doesn’t befall you until you have found a suitable mate. You will be Luna, not Alpha. YOU ARE NOT A MAN.” “I got it from you mother. Dad is just your puppet after all, isn’t he?” I challenged. “That’s enough Miranda,” my father’s authoritative voice came from behind me, “I agree with your mother. If you are not mated by your twenty-second birthday, I won’t be stepping down.” “Dad-” “ It’s final,” he said, squaring his shoulders. “If this is how you react when we, as a pack, intend only to give Mari the recognition she deserves, you are not fit to rule this pack, not alone at least.” I stormed out of the room. I felt so humiliated that I couldn’t stand to be there a second longer. Why should I help my parents plan a party for my cousin when they never gave me the same curtisy? I was never formally introduced to the pack as a grown shewolf. I was never introduced to possible mates. I was hidden away in a city apartment instead. What did I ever do to deserve to be treated this way? Nobody has ever truly loved me, and I doubt that anyone ever will. It’s just me and Lillian against the world, at least until she finds her mate and leaves me to fend for myself. “Hey Lady,” Lil greeted me as I walked through the door, “That was quick!” I walked straight to the kitchen without saying a word. Tossed my bag on the counter and opened the freezer door. “That bad, huh?” she mumbled as she walked over to grab two bowls from the cupboard. “That doesn’t even begin to describe it,” I agonized as I placed the tub of cookies and cream flavoured ice cream on the counter between us. “Two scoops then?” she asked, raising her brows in question. “Three,” I groaned. We were watching Nightmare on Elm Street with our emptied bowls on the coffee table, beside our feet, when I glared at my buzzing phone. “Who is that? Your mom?” she asked. “Warren,” I stated as I turned the phone over to hide it’s judgemental screen. “You know, blowing off some steam could do you some good,” she teased, shoving her elbow in my side. “I don’t want to give him the idea that this is more... than... just sex.” “Was it good s*x though?” she breathed, allowing her head to roll back into the upholstered headrest of our comfortable brown leather couch. “Great s*x!” I countered, “you can borrow him, you know.” She laughed. The sound of her laughter was contagious and I soon joined her. “I’m serious Lil. When last have you been with a man?” “Don’t come turning the tables on me now,” she warned. “I don’t mean it in a bad way...” I sighed. “Em, I’m alright. He’s yours. I don’t need a man. I have BOB,” she insisted. “Ah... trusty ol BOB,” I teased. It’s true, he is a good option; battery-operated boyfriends provide less drama. One thing is for sure though, battery-operated boyfriends weren’t as fun to play with though, and they certainly didn’t have the slabs of bulging muscles my toys had.
