In Purgatory

1085 Words
*George’s POV* Twelve months, three weeks and one day... that was how long I have been stuck in that beach house. The place that once served as a welcome escape from reality now served as my own personal purgatory. I have not been able to make it feel like home. I would’ve lost my sanity a long time ago if not for Gigi and AJ. I ran into them along the sandy beach and was relieved to discover that they were far away from their home too. Although they weren’t exiled by their Alpha, Adrian Agnor, like I was exiled by mine, they accepted me with open arms... literally. Gigi is a hugger. She and AJ had lost her sister after she vanished from her college dorm room without any warning or indication of where she had gone. They had heard about the troubles my former pack had with missing girls and they were here to start their own search. They had been at it, with my help, for over six months without so much as a lead. I walked into the kitchen and was greeted by the delicious smell of scrambled eggs and bacon. I could almost taste the salty tang of the crispy strips as I walked into the room. AJ, Gigi’s mate, was holding her. His arms were wrapped around her waist and his lips were pressed to her neck as they swayed in front of the stove while she prepared breakfast. I suddenly felt like an intruder in my own home. I started to back out, slowly, envying what they had. “George, don’t be so awkward bro,” AJ called, and I could almost picture the smirk on his face as he kept his lips to her neck. “I didn’t mean to intrude,” I told him. “You didn’t,” he said before nipping Gigi’s neck and making her giggle. “Morning George,” she said while still giggling. Her shoulder clenched to her ear as she shielded herself from further attacks. I couldn’t hide the smile on my face. They were perfect together. I only hope that I would find my other half one day. “Morning Gigi,” I greeted her, “tell me if this guy is bothering you, alright. I will put him in his place. AJ took two steps toward me and locked my head in his arms, mussing my hair as he laughed. “Funny bro, real funny. I can’t picture you in a fight, you're just a teddy bear.” He laughed raucously. If he had known me just a little more than a year ago... we wouldn’t be joking like this. I chose not to tell them about my past. My past was something I wasn’t too proud of. I stood and fixed my hair by combing my fingers through my unstyled waft of brown hair. I had invited AJ and Gigi to live with me shortly after meeting them. I preferred not to be left alone with my thoughts. It has been more than a year and I can still see her sitting on the log outside the Pack House, sipping her steaming cup of coffee as the sun reflected off her red curls. It feels like a lifetime ago, but her memory is still seared into my brain. If I could be this messed up by a shewolf that was never my fated mate, being rejected by a woman that never belonged to me... I shudder to think what it would do to me if I did so happen to find her and she was already with someone else. What if I find my fated mate and she rejects me too? I suppose that hauntingly terrifying thought was what kept me here instead of searching for her. “Babe! Take this please,” Gigi called out from where she stood in front of the pan of frying bacon. Both myself and AJ just turned to look at her, unmoving due to shock I suppose. “Babe! Quick!” She yelled, holding her hand to her mouth. Her eyes were widened as she proceeded to run from the room. I lunged to take her place, grabbing the handle of the cast-iron pan before it became unbalanced and fell from the gas stove top. “Gigi,” AJ grabbed her arm as she tried to pass him. She pulled away and ran down the passage. I could see the concern he had for her. The love he felt for her and how he would do anything to protect her. “Go!” I instructed him when he looked at me. “I’ve got this.” Werewolves hardly ever fall ill, so when we did it was usually a big deal. If she was my mate, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere other than by her side. Knowing that, I did what any friend would do... take over whatever needed to be done so he could be with his mate when she needed him. Twenty minutes later, AJ came into the kitchen. The food was already cold but that wasn’t why he had a loss of appetite. “Is she alright?” I asked him, already knowing the answer just by looking at him. “No, she’s not alright bro. She’s nauseous, and she’s never been, not since I have known her. We have been together for five years now.” He looked at the floor as he spoke, his hands pushing back his blond hair. “Anyway... she is asleep now. But what if it’s something serious?” “Whatever it is, I am here for both of you,” I reassured him, placing my hand on his shoulder, “Besides, I have already sent for the local pack’s doctor.” “Thank you,” he said, his eyes holding unshed tears as he hugged me. I was practically frozen to the spot, not knowing how to react to the strange sensation of being hugged by a male friend. Damian and I grew up together, we were best friends, but he never opened up to me like that. Our friendship was always... forced, almost. “Don’t mention it,” I told him. He let go of me and left the kitchen again, walking down the passage to their room. I hope she is alright. They are a sweet couple and good people. They don’t deserve to go through bad times. The Doc will fix her, I am sure of it
