Cassandra
Four years later.
"Mommy? Axel won't share his ball…!" Lori shrieked from the floor, trying to run after a ball on her small, unstable legs.
Her words were still a little unclear to outsiders, but as a mother, I could understand my kids perfectly well. I heard Axel laughing somewhere behind the couch, and another sound like he just tripped on his ball and fell to the floor.
"Careful, Axel." I said, then added, "Let your sister play with the ball too."
"Okay, mommy…" I heard his small voice say, followed by loud, delighted shrieks from both him and his sister.
Sighing, I plopped a piece of pineapple in my mouth and raised the remote, increasing the volume of the TV. How could kids be so small yet make so much noise?
Blocking out their shrieks, I focused on the news airing. I leisurely read the headlines and followed the story, until the host announced the name of the guest they had invited to the studio this time around for their LIVE interview.
"...and let's welcome the man himself, Von Dorsey, famous business tycoon and notorious for his exploits at such a young age!"
Applause filtered out from the TV, but I was frozen in place. Because of that name. Dorsey. Von Dorsey. Zane Dorsey. My heart was pounding so hard and so fast, that it felt like it could explode any minute now.
Could this be some sort of coincidence? After all, different people might share the same surnames, right? I could not breathe as the camera shifted, to show the guest as he walked up to the host and took a seat beside him. Time stopped at that moment. Because right on that screen was Zane.
It was unmistakable.
The striking gorgeous features. The beautiful blue eyes, that perfect smile and short brown hair. And those broad shoulders that filled out the suit he had on, it was just like four years ago when I first saw him. It was him. Frowning, I stared at the words written at the bottom of the screen, Business tycoon, Von Dorsey.
Nowhere did it say Zane. Did he give me a fake name? Is that why I could not find anything on him when I searched his name?
But then, what was he doing in an interview with an international news station on TV?? I remember my boss from the bar mentioning that he was important, but I had no idea that he was this famous, or rich enough to appear on national television!
Breathing shakily, I got up from the couch and looked over at my kids playing around the cramped apartment. They had a rich father who could afford to take better care of them than I could, so I had to make sure he knew about them no matter what. After two years of doing this alone, after not finding him when I needed him the most, life had brought him back again.
Right on the screen in front of me.
Struggling not to cry, I hurried into my room to put on some outside clothes as quickly as possible. Next, I grabbed the twins and dressed then up. It was a live interview, meaning that Zane would still be in the station. I knew where it was located within the city, and with a taxi, I could get there in twenty minutes.
I had to hurry, as this might be my only chance to talk to him again.
In the next couple of minutes, I and the twins were in a taxi, heading straight to the station. My entire body was running hot and cold, as I did not know what to even expect. The last time I had seen him, he did not say a word to me after the s*x. Admittedly, I was a little hurt, but I understood that it was just a one-time thing.
Everything changed when I became pregnant. It was no longer a one-time thing. It became a forever thing, because my kids deserved the stability a capable father could provide for them. If I could not find him now, I would have failed them.
I was scared, but I was also so determined. Nothing could hold me back this time.
Soon, the taxi stopped in front of the news station. I paid the driver and stepped out, carrying the kids out. The gigantic building loomed ahead, behind some very high gates that were covered with cameras at every corner. Two security men paced along the gates, with guns tucked into their pockets.
Swallowing down my fear, I took both Axel's and Lori's hand and led them towards the gate. We had only come within a few feet of it when one of the security men stroked forward, stopping me from taking any step further with one hand outstretched.
"Do you need help, Ma'am?" He asked, glancing at the twins huddled against my legs. They looked scared of the security man,so I stepped back a bit so they could be a little more comfortable.
"I'm here to see someone. We need to go in." I said.
He frowned. "Who?"
"Zan— I mean, Von Dorsey. He's in an interview right now, but I can go in and wait till he's done. It's really important, please." I answered, frantically, sensing that this security man was about to give me a hard time.
"I'm afraid I can't let you in, ma'am. You need to have a special pass to get in there—"
"Please, I have to!" I exclaimed desperately, glancing at the second security man. "Help me, please, I have to talk to him!"
"No can do." He responded and turned away.
I felt so dejected, standing out there exposed and vulnerable, with very young kids holding on to me as their lifeline. But then I noticed the line of black cars parked near the gate, with a chauffeur waiting. That has to be Zane's ride. Meaning he would come out soon.
So I waited. After a while, the gates swung open and a man stepped out, accompanied by a few persons in black suits. It was him. I lifted my kids and ran towards him, tears streaking down my face as I screamed, "Zane! Zane!"
He paused and looked, watching as I ran up to him. I didn't even try to catch my breath before I blurted, "Zane, I've been looking for you for so long… These are your kids!"
