I was up in my room. When Lillian came in, I checked the time. It was just before eleven. Quickly, I ran down stairs and she was taking a long drink from a wine glass. "What happened? Why are you so mad?" "John Crane is an asshole!" "Why? What happened?" "Everything was fine, then I turned to talk to someone, and the next thing I know he gets up and leaves me with the bill!" "You turned to talk to who?" "A business associate!" "For how long?" She then came to realize she had no right to be mad at John. "He could've waited." "No, you sat there talking to the associate too long is my guess, and John wasn't going to have it. Today was about you two, not the business associate." "Damn it!" she shouted and slammed her foot like a child. "And this only confirms that you really need to learn to separate the two." I said and turned to leave. " Why are you home so early, too?" I turned to look at her, and she knew it was something she needed to hear. "Chris thinks that some guy, named Branfield, hired me to find the person killing the witches." "What? Why the hell would he think that?" "I'm not sure, but he does and he confronted me at the party that I was a wolf in sheep's clothing." "You think he told anyone else?" "I'm not sure, but if it gets out..." "Why don't you just talk to him?" "Because I don't need to explain myself to anyone, especially a stupid vampire, who thinks he knows me better than anyone!" "Honey, you do realize you're lying to yourself, right?" "Why? And how?" She leaned toward me. "I've seen how you look at him, sweetheart, and even when you're terrified of him, you still like him." "You are so far off, I don't like him, he just bugs me." "Sure, he does." She said, kissed my forehead, and headed up stairs to her room. I sat there thinking for a bit, we both sucked at reading men. The next morning, Chris came in alone by surprise, and I headed to the back of the bakery. I was going to avoid him for as long as I could. Dalton, came in and I actually sat down to talk with him, sometimes in front of Chris, who looked pissed and would leave. Dalton told me he worked with Chris at the police station, and was giving him grief. "What did you say to him? He's almost desperate to talk to you?" "Nothing, I didn't say anything to him. If he wants to talk to me, then he will." This went on for about a week. By Saturday he stopped coming, and I had a day off. I went for a run now knowing my way around. After a while, I stopped to catch my breath and to tie my shoe, when I heard someone behind me. "Hello Alicia." I turned and found Amanda and four other girls. "Um..it's.." "I don't give a s**t what your name is b***h!" she snarled at me. "Okay, what's going on?" I asked, looking at the other girls. I recognized from the party, and my blood started to run cold, they were wolves. "Chris..." "What about him?" "He's mine." "Okay, I got it." "Then why are you around him? What gives you the right to put your dirty, slutty, hands on him?" "I haven't and I won't." I said, still not looking at her but at the other girls, who had started to change. "Well, to make sure that doesn't happen, consider this a warning." Amanda suddenly snapped her fingers, and the girls charged at me. I barely made it out of the way. I would never be able to out run a wolf, but I was going to try. I booked it as fast as I could, I wasn't even half way back to Lillian's house when one swiped with a clawed paw, and caught my leg. I tripped and tumbled to the ground. Quickly looking around, I saw the tree and jumped up at it. It would only work for a bit, but it would give me a chance to think. I looked at my leg, it looked so bad, the claws had cut deep. "Shit." I said to myself, then I caught sight of one of the girls climbing the tree. I was so more scared than I had ever been of dying in my life. There was this feeling in my chest, and all I thought was, how would I live through this? In a beam of light, it hit the wolves and they ran off. It even knocked the one climbing off the tree. "Oh, thank God!" I said loudly, then a slow clapping sound came from the ground. I looked and I had to groan, " What the hell are you doing here?" "I saw you zoom past my house, then saw the wolves behind you. I had to go check what was going on." "And you so happened to be shirtless, when you noticed?" "I was working out." "Of course you were." "Are you hurt? I can smell..." "I'm fine.." I said, trying to move my leg, but it hurt too much. "Need some help?" "Yes, but not from you." "Why not from me?" he asked, but I slid halfway down the tree but couldn't move further down without it hurting. "That little chase was a warning from your girlfriend, stupid b***h is bat s**t crazy!" He quickly climbed up, pulled my arm around his neck, carefully picked me up and climbed down with me. I could help noticing how his muscles flexed and moved as he climbed down, or ignore the scent he was giving off. Was that cologne? Once on the ground, I tried to get out of his arms, but he tightened his hold on me. "Okay, you can put me down now." He looked right into my eyes, those gorgeous deep blue....I broke the connection, and again I tried to get out of his arms, but he just wouldn't let me go. "My house is closer, then I'm going to have a talk with Dalton about his sister." "That was his..." "Yes, and she just broke the oath." "It's not her fault, Amanda ordered them to." "Yeah, but she did it freely..." I thought back as I had watched the girls. Had they done it freely? While I had been thinking, Chris had sped back to his house, he was already at the door. "Hey, no, you need to take me to the hospital." "If you go to the hospital, they'll call Lillian." "So, she's going to find out anyway!" "Besides, I know what I'm doing." "Sure you do." I said as he walked into the house with me in his arms. When he walked in, I couldn't help noticing his house. I was expecting a little more black, but it was in dark gray and light gray colors, there were curtains on the windows, a big, long couch, a table and chairs. The kitchen had an island in the middle, then the stove and fridge. The living room was roomy, with a plasma T.V and stereo. Then there was a hallway, my guess, leading to the rest of the house. He carefully sat me on the couch, then went to look for some things, giving me the chance to keep looking around. Then he was back with a shirt on and a first aid kit. "Like what you see?" "Where's the coffin?" "What?" "Yeah, where's your coffin, so when you piss me off, I can burn you inside of it." He laughed to himself, as he looked down at my leg, and got to work. It stung like hell, but I didn't scream or make too much of a fuss, even when I wanted to scream. After a while, he stopped, and my leg was bandaged up. He cleaned up and threw things away, then came back, then gave me a glass of orange juice. "What's this for?" "You've lost some blood, so this should help a bit." I took it and took a sip. The chill of it was a welcome change to the heat of the outside. "Now what?" I asked now, a little on edge of why he brought me here. "Now, you have become my blood slave." he said so seriously, that I almost missed the joke. "Ha, no really what now, what do you want from me?" He watched me for a bit. "I've been trying to talk to you this whole week, and was wondering what the hell happened at the party?" "Exactly my question. I was having fun, and you decided to crash it.." "What are you and Dalton a little too cozy for friends if you ask me?" "Jealous, Christopher, that a hunk like that is with me?" Again the color of his eyes drained, they slowly started to turn white. He got super close to me, at some point he took the glass from me, and I fell back against the cushions. His body was above mine, and again I was a little too aware how close we were. "Are you trying to make me jealous?" he asked sternly. "Wow, ego much? No, Christopher, not everything is about you, sorry." "Oh, I can show you just how big my ego is if you like." "No, not interested." I said, looking back at him. After a second, he pushed himself away. "So are you going to answer my questions from that night?" "You didn't ask, you were accusing me of something and I have no idea what that has to do with me." He glared but took a deep breath. "Did Branfield send for you?" "No, I didn't even hear about the deaths until I got here." "Are you a slayer?" "In a way, yes, I was raised in that way, but I haven't really hunted anything for over three years." His eyes studied me, trying to figure out if I was telling him the truth. In the end, my guess is he did believe me. "Why did you come here, if not for the deaths?" I gulped a bit, and broke the eye connection. "More or less trying to hide from my past." "Meaning that you killed someone?" "No, but if they find me..I'll wish to be dead." He growled and took a seat across from me. "Why? What did you do?" "I didn't do anything, damn it!" I yelled at him, " it's a long story." "I'm all ears." he said, laid back, and waited for me to tell him. "Why should I trust you? I haven't even told Lillian any of this, but she knows I ran away. What makes you the indicated person to know my pain?" "I saw the fear in your eyes, Alex, a fear that my guess has burdened you so much, you don't know how to be around people. Nobody else will understand the pain, because they haven't suffered it. You have my word, I won't tell anyone anything that has been said here between us." His tone was so serious, all trace of humor gone, he was being honest. For once I felt some hope, but then again...I took a big gulp of air, wiped away my tears, looking at the floor, I started. "My family planned an arranged marriage for me, about the time I turned seventeen. Just some other slayer family looking to unite the two families, my dad had always tried to find ways to get rid of me. This was his chance. I met the guy. All arrogant and ego the size of a planet, I was blessed to be chosen to be with him. After that one meeting, I would barely see him, Dad wouldn't let me go out and hunt anymore, a whole year...and the couple days before my eighteen birthday...he...raped me." The color in Chris's eyes was completely white, but he didn't show any other indication he was feeling something.
