Time seemed to slow as my heart rate picked up. All I could see was his brown eyes soaking in my features before finally pulling away.
“What do they have you doing for your work shift?” He asked, sitting back down at the kitchen island.
Talking a moment to steady myself, I put the island between us as I leaned against one of the cupboards before replying. “Professor Kratz assigned me some extra school work during that time, to get me caught up.”
“Some Luna books too?” He asked, looking at the covers of the books I currently had with disappointment.
“He was bringing those by later,” I confided. I figured if he knew, it wouldn’t be the end of the world. He seemed to like that answer as his smile grew.
“Good, they are taking Brandy off her Luna classes, she’s losing it currently in Professor Kratz's office.” He informed me.
“Already? I thought they didn’t want anyone to know?” I asked, surprised.
“She’s been having issues with it, so they were going to do this anyway.” He replied, not bothered.
“But won’t she think it's because of me?” I asked, thinking back to this morning and our confrontation.
“I don’t think she will. Either way, I’ll be around and make sure she stays in line with the rest of them.” He commented, unbothered by the idea. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was about to get the full wrath of Brandy’s rage soon enough.
“Why is the Luna stuff such a big deal?” I asked, trying to slightly change the topic.
Maximus seemed a bit surprised by my question but answered anyway. “The Luna connects us to each other. The rumor is, without one, you would be stuck as a wolf or human without being able to change. There are rituals and rites you’ll have to learn and in your last year, my mother will be your mentor, and you will train with her.”
“Do you think she would know why my wolf never came?” I asked.
“She might. I’ll dig around and see what she may know. Another big deal with being Luna, is that you’ll be my mate for life.” His grin grew slowly as he watched me.
“Who said that was something I wanted?” I asked shyly. Being with this man wouldn’t really be the end of the world, he was incredibly handsome, and would have a stable, secure job. What more could you want in a marriage?
“Your wolf will want it, and so do you.” He dropped his voice to a low growl that sent goose bumps over my skin. Jumping off the kitchen stool, he closed the distance between us. Pulling me by the hip closer to him with one hand, while moving my hair off my shoulder with the other. He bent down and buried his face into my neck, kissing my exposed skin ever-so-softly.
I felt something stir inside me, it was like a fire slowly growing in the pit of my stomach. I felt my vision blur as I tried to will myself to push him away, but instead my hands controlled themselves as they reached around him, pulling him closer. It was as if I was in a trance, unable to control my own movements.
“Embrace your wolf, don’t fight against her.” His voice whispered against my ear, causing me to sigh slightly. Naturally, his aroma surrounded me, light and fluffy, warm and welcoming, like the sweetest loaf. His unique scent was all I could focus on, a scent I would never forget.
Just as quickly as he was there in front of me, he was gone sitting back across the island while I tried to make sense of what he was trying to do to me. I felt my heart beat pounding in my chest, sweating. I fought for some air just as the dorm door opened. I knew I needed to control myself instantly. Turning away from the door, I went towards the sink, opening the first cupboard I could reach and grabbing out a glass to fill it with some water.
“Oh Maximus, what are you doing here?” Ava’s voice rang out from the dorm door, with Ethan chuckling and greeting Max with a weird handshake they must have made together at some point.
“Found the newbie lost, so I helped her find her way home.” Maximus chuckled, like nothing had just happened between us. Damn him.
Ava laughed as she came over to where I was standing, reaching for a cup herself. “This place is huge. I got lost on my first day too, ended up in the kitchen somehow.” She reassured me.
I gave her a small smile as I turned to face the boys, hoping I didn’t look obviously flustered.
“Shouldn’t you two be in class?” I asked.
“Who wants to learn about humans anyway,” Ava whined. “I would rather spend some time with my mate.” She added while walking over to Ethan with her water, passing him some. Maximus smirked my way, giving me a wink when the two weren’t watching.
Rolling my eyes, I made my way over to the stack of books and scrolls Professor Katz gave me.
“Let me get those for you.” Maximus said as he swiftly took the stack away and headed towards my room.
Protesting, I followed behind, “I can do it.”
Maximus didn’t even wait at the door, he juggled the books and opened the door, walking right into my room. Sighing, I had no choice but to follow after him.
“You know we should set up some boundaries.” I whispered harshly as he placed the books down on my desk.
“As long as I get to patrol those boundaries.” Maximus whispered softly as he pulled me, into him, out of sight of Ava and Ethan.
“Maximus - “ I tried to protest.
“Hummm, I like it when you say my name.” He whispered as he held me, breathing in my scent one last time before letting me go.
“You can’t do that without asking first,” I said flatly.
“It’s very hard not to,” he retorted.
“Well, I’m willing to attempt this but, I don’t want to jump right in.” I tried to find the right words, but I didn’t know how to explain what I wanted. Maximus folded his arms over his chest, and almost looked like he was going to pout, annoyance clearly written on his face. “What I mean is, I want to take things slow. I’ve never even had a boyfriend before, this is just a lot.” I whispered, hoping that Ava and her mate had gone to her room and couldn’t hear us anymore.
Sighing, he unfolded his arms and reached one hand out. “Can I have your hand?” He asked.
“My hand?” I questioned as I slipped it into his.
“If you won't let me hug you, then I want this.” He whispered.
“That's a good start.” I chuckled as I watched him kiss the back of my hand. “So does this mean we are, uh, dating? Do wolves do that?” I asked nervously.
“Yes they do, and yes, I want that.” He asserted. I could tell by the look in his eyes that he wanted to pull me in for a hug and a large part of me wanted it too. I found myself moving on my own as I took a large step closer, feeling our skin brush up against one another.
“You can-“ but he cut me off, reaching out. He pulled me in closer to him, crashing his lips into mine. Shock rippled through me as a growl emerged from my throat, something I didn't even know I could do. Electricity zapped over my skin as my heart rattled in my ears. The kiss didn’t last long, but it was perfect in every way. I had imagined my first kiss over and over again and this was nothing like I thought it would be. He pulled away with a big grin on his face.
“I was going to say you can have a hug.” I gasped in shock.
“I saw a rogue on the border, and had to attack him.” He teased. I couldn’t help but laugh along with him. What in the world was I getting into?
