Celine's POV
"How come your last name isn't Shaw?" Amy asked as she came out of the bathroom with her robe on.
"I started using my middle name as my last before junior year in high school. It keeps me out the family drama and keeps the family name away from the trouble that I cause" I explained with a shrug.
"And you never mentioned it before because?" she said.
"Because I didn't think it mattered?" I said.
"Good point" Amy said and we both chuckled.
Then, Ara entered the room.
"Hey, girly" I greeted her cheerfully.
"Hi, Celine" she greeted back cheerfully.
"Amy, can I sleep here, please? I tried sleeping in my bedroom after I woke up but I can't fall asleep again" Ara asked Amy.
"Sure thing. You and Celine can take the bed" Amy said without any hesitation at all.
"Then where will you sleep?" Ara asked.
"I'll ask for an extra mattress later. Go ahead and sleep. You were in the party for a while" Amy said to Ara.
"Okay" Ara said softly.
Ara made her way to the bed and laid down the bed.
"Sleep tight" Amy said tucking Ara in and she motioned for me to turn off the lights so I did.
"Let's talk in the balcony" Amy said and I nodded before following her to the balcony.
"Do you want a juice, water, wine or anything?" Amy asked.
I can tell that she was still a bit tensed after what happened earlier in the engagement party.
I would've never thought that I'd see her tonight.
Not to mention in my own brother's engagement party which also turned out to be my bestfriend's engagement party.
"I'm fine, Amy. I think I've had enough drinks at the party" I told her chuckling.
Amy nodded.
The last time I saw Amy this nervous was when she woke up late and I had to wait for her for a good 2 hours for our little date.
Amy has always been the best bestfriend I could ever ask for.
She's not very showy but she's always so genuine to the people she cared for.
Amy is protective, caring, kind, loving, and so many more.
Out of all the people I've met in my life, she was the only person who made me feel secure every single time.
I would trust her with my life if I had to.
She was the first person who I was determined to keep in my life.
I felt that I didn't need anyone else if I had her in my life.
Since I basically couldn't be with my family, Amy became my family.
She understood me and never expected me to change.
That's Amy for me.
She'd do anything for me and I'd do anything for her.
"Amy" I said softly.
"Yeah?" she replied.
I reached for Amy's hand and squeezed it.
"Let's run away. We'll take Ara with us. We can have our name changed and all. I know some people who can help us fake documents and all that. So, don't do this if you don't want to" I said.
Amy looked at me for a while and then, she burst into a fit of laughter.
I pouted.
This is such an important matter.
"Amethyst" I scolded her.
Amy calmed herself down while I pouted.
"Sorry sorry" she said giving me a pat.
I slightly frowned.
"I'm serious, Amy" I said.
Amy smiled at me.
"I'm not going to make us a criminal just because I'm not fond of the fact that I'm marrying your brother" she told me.
"But I don't want you to marry someone you don't love" I said as my voice slightly broke.
Amy chuckled and pulled me for a hug.
"Well, it's a good thing I wasn't planning on falling in love with anyone anyway" she whispered to me as she caressed my back.
"Don't think too much of it. This is exactly why I couldn't tell you about it" she said.
I sobbed.
"Can't we do anything?" I asked.
"If we do something, my parents won't leave Ara and her child alone. I don't want my future niece or nephew to be caught up in my parents' drama" she told me.
I sighed.
"Do you hate it that much that I'm marrying your brother?" she asked chuckling.
I immediately shook my head.
"Of course not. Don't you know that it'd be a dream come true for me to have you as my sister? But not like this. I can't let you marry someone because you were forced to. Not even when it's my brother" I said looking at her.
Amy smiled.
"When did we become so dramatic?" she said laughing.
I pouted.
"You should get some rest. It's been a long night" she said.
"But---" I tried to complain but she immediately pulled me back inside and to the bed.
"Get some sleep. I will too" she told me.
I pouted at her.
"I don't want to sleep. I want to talk" I said.
Amy shook her head.
"We have more time to talk tomorrow since you're sleeping over. Now, rest" she said.
I just sighed and agreed with her.
I went to bed and Amy went out to ask for an extra mattress.
I knew that she didn't want to talk about it more but I was determined to do everything that I can to help her get out of the situation.
I love my brother, yes.
I love him like 100% but I love my bestfriend by 102% so...
Don't get me wrong, Devon and I are really close and all but this is not it.
Literally, Devon can find someone else whose family is filthy rich for the family business.
But it shouldn't be my bestfriend.
It would be fine if they loved each other but no.
That was not the case.
Nope.
So I say no to this engagement.
I'll probably get in trouble with my parents but I don't care.
Amy has already gone through enough hardship in her life.
My brother will not add up to that.
Devon is a good man.
He's hard working, rich, not to mention good looking.
All the would women go crazy over him.
Devon is also a great brother.
Despite me being a spoiled trouble maker, he still treats me with the best.
But, Devon isn't exactly husband material.
He spends more time in his office than he does at home.
He does what he wants to do whenever he wants to do it.
He's better solo.
Thinking of it now, Amy and Devon are quite the same.
Not in a good way.
Amy is an independent woman and Devon is a dominant man.
How will that work exactly?
I'm afraid that they'll be in each other's throat just hours after they get married.
Amy is specially not fond of Devon.
I can tell.
I've known Amy for 7 years.
It's an easy job to tell that Amy doesn't like the setup she's in.
She wouldn't vocally complain about it but I know how much stressed she's feeling.
I sighed.
I grabbed my phone to send a text to Devon.
To: My favorite man
I need to talk to you tomorrow.
I sent the message.
I really need to do something about this.
If Amy refuses to cooperate, I'll have make Devon cooperate.
Then, I finally went to bed and slept.
I'll need all the energy I can gather for tomorrow.
I don't know how long I slept but I woke up without anyone beside me and the sunlight coming from the window.
I sat up sleepily and made my way out of the bed and into the bathroom.
By the sink was a new toothbrush, towels and clothes.
Awwww.
I'm sure Amy prepared it.
But where is she?
I quickly showered and got prepared for the day.
Then, I made my way downstairs.
But as soon as I saw the living room, I stopped.
There were a bunch of people crowding Amy early in the morning.
"What's going on?" I said confused as I got down.
Ara came to me.
"Good morning, Celine" Ara greeted.
"Good morning, Ara. What's happening?" I said and glanced at Amy's direction.
She seemed busy discussing something with the people in the living room.
"Oh it's Amy's wedding gown fitting" she said.
My jaw dropped.
Wedding gown fitting?
So soon?
"You're up"
I turned to look and saw Devon coming out of the kitchen with a glass of water in his hands.
I gave him a confused look.
"You're here" I said.
"Yeah" he said with a shrug as he made his way towards Amy's direction.
Then, he looked at the paper that Amy was holding.
Amy glanced at Devon who was close to her and pushed his face away from hers.
Devon frowned but kept his distance.
What is going on?
Devon made his way towards me.
"What are you up to?" I said with a raised brow.
"Wedding fitting" Devon said with a shrug.
I just stared at him for a moment.
"We need to talk" I said and pulled Devon to the kitchen.
Once we reached the kitchen, I turned to look at Devon.
"What?" he said.
"Call it off" I said.
"Call what off?" he said leaning on the the kitchen island.
"The engagement. The wedding. That" I said and pointed to the direction of the living room.
Devon raised a brow at me as he crossed his arms infront of his shoulders.
"Why would I?" he said.
"What do you mean why?" I said in disbelief.
"Devon, you two are getting married because you guys were told to do so?" I said.
"Yeah. So?" he said.
I looked at him in disbelief.
"I doubt that you guys even know each other enough" I said crossing my own arms infront of my chest.
Devon smirked at me.
"She's Amethyst Beverly Wright. She's 25 and she works as an apprentice for a designer called Lady A. She left home at 18 and lived independently for the last 7 years. Isn't that all I need to know?" he said.
My brows furrowed.
"You know her age, name and occupation. Do you seriously think that's enough information about her to get through this fixed marriage?" I said in disbelief.
"Why not? A lot of rich people do it" he said.
My mouth gaped open both in shock and disbelief.
"Cancel the engagement now. This is wrong" I insisted.
"Why are you so eager to have the engagement canceled?" Devon said raising a brow at me.
"Why don't you just cancel it?" I asked back.
"Our parents wanted it. Not me" he said in his defense.
"When did you ever do something that our parents wanted?" I said.
"Now" he said with a shrug.
I scoffed.
"Seriously, Devon. Why are you pushing through with this? You've denied 3 other girls that our parents set you up with. Why don't you just do the same to Amy?" I said.
It's true.
This isn't the first time that Devon was set up to get married by my parents.
He always found a way out before the actual engagement party.
That's why I was so surprised that he pushed through with the engagement party last night and actually appeared in front of everyone.
"I don't know" he said.
I frowned.
"Devon" I said.
"You've got to be fcking kidding me" I said frustrated.
"Oh believe me. I'm not" he said.
My jaw clenched.
"Please. I'm literally begging you" I pleaded.
"Why are you so against this? Did Amethyst tell you to do this?" he asked with furrowed brows.
I looked away as I bit my lower lip.
"No" I said.
"She told me to just let it be and to not think too much of it" I said with a sigh.
"See? Then what's your deal?" he said.
I looked at Devon again.
"I refuse to see my bestfriend get married off to someone she doesn't love. I mean, Amy has never even been in a relationship all her life. She's never experienced love before and now, she's getting married?" I said in frustration.
Devon looked at me then smirked.
"She's never been in a relationship before?" he asked.
I nodded.
Devon smiled.
"Good" he said and walked out of the kitchen.
I watched as he disappeared.
What was that about?
What was that expression on his face?
What in the world is my brother up to?
