Chapter 5 Ryan

I judge her from the start, i thought Alexis Roberts was another single mother out there with a messed up past, one where her drunk ass boyfriend or high school sweetheart took her innocence then knocked her up and left her to care for her baby alone and ashamed, but I was not even close; she was far from a messed up girl, she was a big sister fighting to survive and offer her baby brother all the care and comfort she could give
she was young i could see that no more than twenty one, younger yes having to care for a boy at such a young age is amazing and she deserves admiration.
despite everything her beauty is out of this world and her innocence is notable, something about her makes her desirable.
i left Shirley's dinner with a need to protect her, she is like a wounded creature who needed healing, someone to look out for her and i intend to be that person.
the following morning i walked in to my clinic still thinking about Alexis Roberts.
"good morning Dr. Walker" said Martha
Martha has been working with me for the past three years since i opened up my clinic.
"you have two appointments today and the hospital called to ask if you could do a walk in for them." she continued.
"that is OK with me since i only have two patients i can do that, call the hospital and let them know i will be there in three hours." i told her
my morning wasn't busy so i decided to leave a bit early to the hospital; volunteering at the hospital every time i could was something i enjoyed doing, Canmore has only two pediatrician and one of them is Dr. Charles who often goes out to the reservation near Alberta to help with the small clinic the have.
"Martha, let the hospital know that i am on my way there and please hold my appointments for tomorrow for an hour i have something very important i need to do in the morning" i said
"yes doctor Walker as you wish" she said "Ryan Martha when are you going to stop calling me Dr. Walker" i asked "we are like family you know"
the older lady blushed as she always do when i mentioned the relationship we have.
the hospital was a few blocks away from the clinic so i decided that driving would be better, i usually grab coffee on my way there but today i decided to do it on my way home.
after parking my car i made my way into the hospital and to the nurses station."good morning Dr. Walker" greeted a few nurses.
i will not pretend i don't know the nurses have a crush on me specially since i am single, but none of them had ever caught my eyes.
before Alexis Roberts no woman had made my head turn.
"good morning Dr. Walker" it was the head nurse
"Good morning" i answered "i heard you have a few patients you would like me to visit."
"yes sir, the patient in room 23 is a four year old boy with a high fever and no matter what we do we have not been able to reduce the fever and well room forty six is an older boy a nine year old who broke his femur last night." explained the head nurse "Dr. Charles performed the surgery but isn't here for follow up."
i took the medical chart the head nurse was handing me and made my way to the patients room.
a few minutes later i was back at the nurses station.
"patient in room forty six is doing good, he can be discharged in four days but the little boy in room twenty three his case is a bit more delicate, his fever is very high which indicates that he has a chronic inflammation or even lupus" i said to the head nurse "i need you to have him do following test done a CRP, a VP and a ESR. have them do these test as soon as possible and if Dr. Charles isn't here by the time the results are out call me."
"yes doctor" said the head nurse
i handed her the chart and left.
i was tired but needed my coffee so i got into my car and drove to Espresso's Cafe.
it didn't take me long before i opened the door to hear her laughter, it was magical and like a siren song to my ear. i walked into the cafe and made my way to the counter for my usual.
" a cup of americano, no sugar or cream please" i said to the barista
"Ryan" it was Kristen, my childhood friend and owner of the Espresso Cafe "come join us "she called out
i took my order and made my way over to where Alexis, Kristen and little Ben were sitting.
"hey buddy" i said giving Ben a high five
i turned to Alexis and Kristen a muttered a quick hello.
"so Ryan, i see you already met Alexis" said Kristen
"yes i have" i answered "she is the new owner of my old place, i had it up for sale last week and she was the lucky buyer" i explained not taking my eyes off Alexis
"and lucky she is" said Kristen "Ryan here is the most illegible bachelor in Canmore, hell in all Alberta"
i gave her a look that said you need to shut up, she understood and rolled her eyes.
"Alexis was telling me about her mother's passing and how that was what brought her here to our beautiful Canmore' said Kristen
but Kristen was done,
"did you also know that she is only twenty years old" she continued "which makes us three years older and her seniors"
"aren't you being a little nosy" i said "it doesn't seem that Alexis wants her entire life story exposed and here you are blabbing it to the entire Canmore"
i know i was a little harsh but sometimes it took a bit of harshness to get Kristen to shut up and right now she deserved it, always over talking and never knowing when she should shut up.
I have known her since high school, she was never into college like the rest of us so when she became of age her parents let her take over the Cafe and now she is the owner.
i turned to find Alexis looking at me, she blushed when our eyes met.
god she is beautiful and innocent, i have dated many beautiful women before but none can compare to her.
"earth to Ryan" said Kristen giggling "where are you buddy" a grin plastered on her face.
knowing me as how Kristen knew me, my interest in Alexis was noticed and i know she will not let it go.
i had to leave before she exposed me, i don't think i am ready or it is the appropriate time for me to make a move, Alexis just moved to this town and has unresolved issues, i don't want to add to her problems. one thing is for sure thou, Alexis Roberts will be mine forever.
i got up and gave Kristen a hug and turned to Alexis.
"it was nice seen you again Alexis"
i turned to walk away but an idea came to me, "do you mind if i come by tomorrow" i asked "i got some stuff i think little Ben here would like"
she gave it some thought but in the end agreed to having me over.
i turned and walk away the biggest smile on my face.
"one step at a time Ryan, one step at a time" i whispered to myself
