Cara sat on her bed, in her apartment, staring at the open box that lay before her, waiting to be packed with clothes and other things she needed for her stay with Adrian. She didn’t need an angel, or the devil himself to tell her that she was getting herself into a mess that would be very difficult to come out of.
Why had she agreed to such a thing?
Gabriel had called nonstop that evening as if he knew that she had finally gotten her hands on Adrian. She had refused to pick the calls, and instead stared at the phon until it stopped ringing and went silent. If only he knew…
“What are you doing, Cara?” She whispered into the empty room. And there was that kiss. It had taken everything she had in her not to go back for more: his lips had been so soft…it had felt like she had died and gone to heaven in the short seconds it lasted. And the way he had looked at her…phew…
Annoyed at the direction her thoughts were going, she stood up and began to pack her things. It was just going to last for a couple of weeks, he had said. And in those couple of weeks, she was clueless as to what she needed.
What clothes and accessories did a woman need when she was with the one and only Adrian Nikalaou?
Everything.
Every f*****g thing!
Too engrossed in her packing, she didn’t notice when Elena walked through the widely open door, until she was standing right in front of her.
“Why are you shoving all your belongings into that box, like you won’t be back?” Elena asked, staring at the box and the clothes that continues she to pile up on it.
Cara rolled her eyes, ignoring the expression on her sisters face. It was nice to see her again, and have her around. But the thing with Adrian was kinda very important, and was an opportunity she wasn’t ready to miss. “I am just taking the things I need, Elena.” She drawled, pulling out a block strappless dress she had bought for a function months back, but hadn’t worn it, as she had fallen ill that day. “Do you think this would be okay to wear to a dinner date?” She asked Elena.
The truth was, she wasn’t sure what being Adrian’s fake mistress entailed. Would they go to functions together? Should he take her out in public? Would he take her to fake dates?
A lot of unanswered questions flooded her mind.
It was Elena’s turn to roll her eyes. “Obviously…” she answered and set about, sorting the clothes which were in the bag already. “I swear you. Don’t know the first thing about packing.” She grumbled, and Cara smiled discreetly. Elena was right. And she had secretly hoped that her sister would help her out.
“Thank you sis!” She said, moving to the place she kept her shoes.
There was a heavy sigh from behind her. “Are you sure you are doing the right thing, Cara?” Elena asked, sounding very worried, and trightly so. It was the same question that had kept running through her head, at night, and e en this morning when the driver had dropped her off at her apartment.
“I have no answer to that question, Elena.” She shrugged, holding out a par of shoes to her sister. “All I know is, this is an opportunity I don’t want to miss.” She added, and turned to her another one, not wanting her sister to see the expression in her face.
She was wrong, and she knew it.
“Cara…I know what the media has been saying about him. They have continued to paint him as this bad person, with a lot of ego.” She said, and Cara heard the sound of the zip as she s**t the box. “But then…on the other hand, I think you are taking this too far. He was honest with you when he asked you to do this for him, and you…oh dear. If he finds out what you are up to…” she trailed off, not completing her sentence. She didn’t need to.
Cara already knew what she was trying to say. “He’s not going to find out.” She retorted, trying to convince both herself, and her sister. “And even if he does, I would be long gone by then. And would have my damn job back.”
As she spoke, the words felt like sand in her mouth.
“Are you listening to yourself? You want to meet this man’s family, and write about them, and him…Cara_” she tried to say, but was interrupted by the blast of cara’s ringtone.
They both turned to look at the phone at the same time, and saw the name written there.
Adrian.
Cara bit her lips as she picked up the phone, suddenly feeling like a bundle of nerves. “Hello?” She spoke softly into the phone. She could feel her heart race in anticipation of hearing his voice,
Odd.
“Hey…uhhh…I’ll be at your place in five minutes.” His thick voice filtered through the phone, causing her already jumbled nerves to tighten further. “Just wanted to give you a heads up.”
Cara nodded and managed a slight smile, even if he couldn’t see her. “Okay, Adrian. I’m already packed.” She said, casting a quick glance at her sister, who had just zipped up the second box, containing her shoes.
“See you in a bit.” He said, and hung up.
How could he affect her, just by speaking?
She must have stood there for a few long moments because, Elena was suddenly in her face, frowning. “Earth to Cara.” And gave her a slight shove as if to bring her back to reality.
She needed it.
“He said he’ll be here in five.” She managed and bent down to pick up one of the boxes.
“And you already spent half of that smiling and licking your lips, weird woman.” Elena bit out, picking up the second box as they made their way out of the room to the living room.
Cara didn’t comment on that, and instead, remained quiet. How could she deny, when she had been caught red handed?
Adrian sat in his car, parked a few blocks away from Cara’s house. How could he explain that the thought of seeing her already made him feel jittery and nervous?
It had to be that kiss!
Why had he even kissed her?
Damn.
Just one taste of her lips, and now he wanted her like he had never wanted anyone before. Cara was trouble, and if the bike that rose to his throat was anything to go by, he knew he was willing to jump into that trouble head first, and think of the consequences later.
Theo and Leander had had a lot to say to him about his decision to pick Cara as his fake mistress, even if it was all their idea in the first place. They liked her, but Theo was especially worried about the circumstances of which they had met.
Even he had been surprised with himself when he had done it, but there was no going back now, he thought, as he switched on the engine and made his way over to her apartment.
Adrain shook his head as he caught sight of the building, smiling to himself. He had packed his car because he had left the office too early, and had only realized it when he was a few blocks away. Crazy s**t.
Once he was packed appropriately, he came down from the vehicle and headed towards the entrance. He was about to enter when a sound stopped him. If he want mistaken, he was sure what he had heard, sounded like the shutter of a camera.
He turned and looked around, frowning as he checked every corner his vision could reach.
Nothing.
Maybe he was wrong.
He sighed and walked inside. In as much as he wanted to start this charade, he didn’t want the paparazzi to spoil it yet. He had the thing with his family, and then he could think of the media. There was no need to complicate issues with the thing about Mia still on. Theo had succeeded in calling her out on her lies, but it was going to take a lot of time before things relaxed.
He stared at Cara’s door for a full minute before raising his hands to knock.
Gosh, he was a nervous wreck!
The door opened almost immediately to reveal a face identical to Cara, but not Cara. “Uhmm…hello?” He said, managing a small smile.
The woman who was not Cara, looked at him with narrowed eyes before smiling. A smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “You must be Adrian.” She said, and stepped away from the door, ushering him inside.
“Yes…and you must be cara’s sister.” He said, feeling a little bit uncomfortable at her scrutiny. The woman could pass as an identical twin to Cara, but there was a huge difference. But he wasn’t sure it was noticeable at first glance.
Only to those who had looked at Cara a lot.
Like him.
She was the same size as Cara, but maybe half an inch taller…and had a sharp edge to her build. Like she visited the gym a lot. And once he laid eyes on the necklace she was wearing, he got his answers.
She was military.
“Yes i_” she started to say, but was interrupted by the clank of a box as Cara stepped into the room.
Once Adrian laid his eyes on her, it felt like every other thought he was having disappeared at that moment, because she was the only thing he could see.
“Cara..” he breathed…taking in her form, in the beautiful sundress she was wearing. She could literally pass for a freaking model.
All those times they spent together, with her in his big clothes, she hadn’t even noticed a lot about her body, except when he had had her in his arms. But now….damn..
“Hi…” it was a whisper. But if he’ll like she had said it into a microphone, with the speaker, installed in his body, because her voice sounded loud enough, and the whispers settled against his skin…
Oh dear.
