I was terrified, shaking all over. My mother sat in front of me, and my cheek still burned from the slap she had given me earlier. She had yelled at me too, my ears still hurting. But after she had finished, we just sat in silence.
Her eyes continued to burn into me, though. I wasn’t sure what we were waiting for, but as the sun began to set, I heard the front door open and close. I braced myself for footsteps approaching, expecting it to be Chris, but it wasn’t.
“Kaytlyn,” my father said.
He stood beside my mother, who was sitting on the couch and looking over my head at my sister. I turned in my seat to see her. What was she doing here?
