NATHAN AND BURKE REACHED the industrial estate on Greenwell Street and discovered that the road on either side of the entrance had been blocked by police patrol cars. In addition to the cars blocking the road, and the civilian vehicles that had been stopped by the barricades, there was the van that both detectives recognised as belonging to the armed response team.
Burke parked his car half on and half off the pavement, as close to the gates of the estate as he could get, and hurried after Nathan. He didn’t catch up to his partner until he reached the entrance, where Nathan was attempting to find out what the situation was. He stopped a pace or two behind his partner and stood quietly while Nathan spoke to the DCI, who didn’t look at all happy to see his subordinate.
