"Wake up!", Mrs. Jonas, stepmother of Sana shouted out. "You are late Sana! I swear I will send you walking to the city if you miss the bus!", she spoke up coldly. Taking a deep sigh, Sana lazily opened her eyes and sat in her place. She rubbed her eyes while her yawn was unstoppable. She hardly slept for two hours and now she has to wake up for going to the city. "Get ready quickly, we will be coming with you till the bus stop", Mrs. Jonas explained. Sana's yawn paused as her eyes widened and she became a statue. "Never in my life she came to leave me in school and now she is coming to see off me?", a thought crossed into Sana's mind. "Is she planning to get rid of me by sending me to the city forever?". "Sister~", Jack, the youngest brother groaned catching Sana's attention. "A bee just entered in your mouth", he mocked making Sana come back to her senses and close her mouth which was wide open enough for any insect to get in. "She is cute", Julie, the eldest daughter of Jonas giggled. "Come on wake up or else you will be late", she said with a smile. A magical smile touched over Sana's pinky plump lips making her look the true beauty of the early morning. Nodding to her sister she quickly got up on her place. Before she could fold her mattress, Mr. Jonas stopped her. "Let me do it for you", he offered with a sympathetic grin. "Your mother doesn't like to be late, you know right?", he asked laughingly. For a while, Sana was surprised watching the things going around. It wasn't a normal thing on a regular day of her life. Never did her stepfamily ever cared or talked to her with a smile, kindness, and love but they were doing it now. It would have become suspicious for others but for Sana, the silly girl thought everything changed. She thought that she finally got a family who loves her just because she agreed to them and she Is willing to do anything they would tell her. But the truth was that they were afraid if Sana would not send them money on time if they continue to be rude and arrogant as always. And, as she is going to stay in a city, they were afraid if she could change. • • • "Sister! Don't forget to call us when you reach there and get your new cell phone", Jack shouted out as he ran behind the bus taking his cute little steps. He was as warm as Sana, opposite of his family. "Be careful or you will fall baby!", Mrs. Jonas grabbed Jack from behind before he could fall over his face as he bumped on pebbles. Sana worriedly looked out of the window. She couldn't do anything rather than just watching her family for the last time until they meet again. "We will meet soon", she mumbled as her hold over the window's safety rod tightened up. Her cute dovy eyes sparkled up with tears. She kept looking behind at the stop until they disappeared out of her sight. Her stepfamily stayed at the stop to show some kindness until Sana's bus disappeared from their sight too. "I hope she sends money on time for my makeup and studies", Julie rolled up her eyes and sighed. "Let's go home Jack, aren't you sleepy?", she said annoyingly and grabbing her younger brother's hand and dragging him into the car. Sana closed the window and took out her mini diary from her bag. The address of her new home was written on it with the name and phone number of the landlord. "I hope if this lady would be nice to me", she mumbled. She closed it and kept it back in her backpack after staring for a long time at her diary. "The countryside is too beautiful. I wish if this journey never ends, it feels good here to be away from all the toxic and selfish people", Sana mumbled as she kept looking out of the windowpane. "I wish if I would be able to see this beauty of nature with you", she whispered. Her tearful caramel orbs were gazing up at the sky. • • • Things got a bit noisier as her bus entered the big city. Tall buildings and big banners over buildings left Sana's jaw dropped admiring how tall and large they were. Grabbing her belongings carefully, Sana got off the bus. Her diary was safely grabbed in her hands, afraid to lose it anywhere. "Will she come to pick me up? Or shall I call her?", Sana mumbled as her pair of eyes peeked around her finding anyone in her 60's. "There is no one here I think". Giving up on finding the lady, Sana decided to better find a calling booth and ask her where she is. "Is this Sana? Stepdaughter of Jonas?", a deep female voice called out her name from behind making Sana startle and jump on her place. Sana quickly turned around to see a woman in her 60s wearing a suit as if she was a business lady. Her hairs were wavy and short above her shoulders while her face was flawless than what it should be of someone in her age, wrinkles everywhere. "What are you staring at?", the woman asked straightly as she scanned Sana from head to toe. Her face has no emotions, she looked too arrogant than her actual family. "So- Sorry Ma- Mam-", Sana was about to apologize but the woman cut off her midsentence. "So you are Sana?", she inquired again as she looked over something in her cell phone. "Only one suitcase? nothing more?". She asked as Sana didn't have anything but her only travel backpack resting on her shoulders. "Ye-yes, Mam. I- I think this is enough for me", Sana mumbled while staring down at the ground nervously. She was too afraid to think about how could she survive in this big city full of strangers and arrogant people. The first one was already standing before her, rest there are many to meet more. "Well then, let's go", putting back the mobile in the pocket of her pants, the woman said as she took the backpack from Sana's shoulder and rested it over her shoulder. The woman began walking while Sana stood behind stunned, thinking about why was the lady landlord carrying her luggage. "I won't be waiting for you near my car for long. Or else walk to my home", she spoke up loudly for Sana to hear her. Shooking her head to get rid of thoughts, Sana quickly began following her before the strange lady could change her decision again and leave her alone in this unknown place. • • • "I didn't introduce myself to you, It's Maria. Maria Smith. You better call me Mam", the woman introduced herself. "Ni-Nice to meet you, Mam. Myself Sana, Sana...", she paused midsentence. Sana became uncomfortable out of blue to let out her last name. "It's okay, I don't need to know that. Jonas is enough for me", the Lady spoke up letting out a sigh. Sana said nothing rather than just nodding and looking out of the windowpane of the car. "So, you are new in the city right? You never visited it before?", the woman inquired. Her gaze was over the road, focusing on her drive. "No", Sana answered nervously. Her fingers began playing with the hem of her hoodie. "No what?", the lady asked. Her eyebrows met in puzzlement as she was perplexed by the strange acts of the girls sitting right beside her on the passenger seat. The lady waited for an answer. She expected a little response from her but then she thought if she was making her uncomfortable. To the things which she heard about Sana from Jonas's was only about her coming for a job in the city. The lady doesn't know about Sana giving up on her dreams for the selfish family. Neither Sana would care to share it with her too easily. As she doesn't want her family to look bad in someone's eyes. "Hey, girl cheer up! Don't make me think that I'm making you uncomfortable here in my presence. Never in my life, anyone did such a thing", Maria started. "Look, I don't like being a good person to everyone. so if I'm being nice then be respectful of it", she cleared up. "Sorry, I didn't mean-", Sana quickly began to apologize but Maria interrupted her. "It's okay", Maria let out. The rest of the drive was passed in silence. none of them spoke a word. As they reached the parking of the apartment, Maria got off of her car while Sana did the same. "Follow me", Maria ordered as she locked the car and began walking towards the lift. • • • "So, this is your apartment", Maria said as she sat on the couch. "I don't care if you like it or not. I'll be stopping by your place every month end. Note that you need to pay me the rent cash on that day, also keep my home clean as possible. If not, then I'll make you clean it right before me and also make you clean my apartment as a punishment", she clarified with a smirk. "Don't worry, I won't upset you", Sana mumbled nervously. She ain't got any confidence as everything going on was making her bewildered. The space in the apartment was twice bigger than her stepfamily home who slept together in one room. Sana has got a well-furnished apartment with her personal bedroom to rest. Something truly amazed her for the first time since she came into the city. "Keep your words, then", Maria let out a sigh before standing in her place and taking steps towards the door. "And yeah!", she stopped. "Don't call me unless it's really important. Understood?", Maria asked with a glare at Sana. Sana simply nodded with a smile at her as an answer. "Good then, All the best", Maria cheered her up with a grin and walked out of the apartment. "She makes me confuse about her", Sana mumbled as she locked the door. She then walked back into her bedroom to get some rest and put her clothes in the wardrobe.
