1 The snow fell wet and heavy, numbing Marnie’s fingers. It slapped against her face and stung her straining, bloodshot green eyes. Marnie had flown through snow before. And rain, and sleet, and winds so strong they whipped her all over the sky and made her wonder if this would be the day she fell. She was taller than average, slim, with tight muscular arms like a climber, but legs that were used to doing less of the work. At most, they helped her get a running start so she could take off and pump her arms hard until she was airborne, the way people did in their flying dreams.
