9. Making Friends

Kayleigh woke up at six a.m. sharp like she did every morning. Feeling a little lost and restless, she yanked on a pair of ash and blue sweats that was in her wardrobe and went as quietly as she could out of room and down the stairs. The house was dimly lit all round. When she turned the knob on the door leading outside, she half expected it to be locked. But it opened easily not even squeaking. As she stepped out, a chill breeze blew past and she shivered lightly just as two men came out of the shadows. They were both bulky and looked immensely strong with features that made them handsome but while one was fair headed, the other's hair was dark as a Raven's feathers. "Luna" They said in a chorus coming at her sides. "I'm sorry Luna but you can't go out" Fair head told her. She ignored the Luna bit. “Says who?" "The Alpha specifically asked us not to let you out of our sight unless he commands it." Fair-head spoke again. "Well, you can tell your Alpha to take his authority and shove it up his a**. I'm just going for a run. You can come if it would make you feel better." She said starting to walk passed them. "Luna..." Raven said blocking her path. "You can come along if it makes you feel better. You would still be obeying your Alpha.” "I don’t think..." Fair-head started but she cut him off. "Look...what's your name?" She asked him. "Paul," he replied instantly "And he's Raven." He stated pointing at Raven hair whose cheeks colored slightly. Clearly everyone was thinking what Kayleigh was thinking. "Of course, he is." Kayleigh couldn't keep the amusement from her tone. "Anyways look guys, I'm being nice by not throwing you at a wall. Do not make me change my mind." She warned. "We’ll just come along." Raven offered and she shrugged. The morning was slightly chilly. There were lights all around the house and crickets sang from a distance. She breathed in deeply scenting the early morning mist. Slowly, she eased herself into a light jog. Making sure to take in her surroundings. She went round the house first. It was huge. About 500m around. Then she went into the forest running lightly slowing a few times to mark a distinct feature that would allow her to find her way back. She would prefer not to have to ask for the help on Sky's guards to find her way back. She was about 2 kilometers into the forest when she heard the sound of a stream. She slowed and went towards it. "Wow." she whispered as she took in the view. The stream was beautiful. It had Water Lilys and those floaty leaf things. There were large beautiful trees around it that reflected in the water. "Wow." she repeated her eyes shining. "It is very pretty." She heard a light male voice say from beside her and years of practice had her stilling her yelp and turning slowly. 'Please don't let it be Wesley. Please don't let it be Wesley' She prayed silently but was quite sure it wasn't him. His voice was more baritone and sexy. It would have sent involuntary shivers down her spine. "Oh hi," she smiled a little after sighing in relief when she met Chris's blue eyes. Anyone but Sky. He was sitting on a large stone a water bottle in hand. "Hi" He answered staring at her from top to bottom. "What are you doing out here so early in the morning?" "Same as you." She answered taking in his cream and blue sweats and canvas. "Fair." He answered standing up "About yesterday..." He started. “You don’t have to explain anything to me. Honestly, I don’t care." "Okay. Can we start again? As strangers?" Kayleigh replied with an outstretched hand. Allies were important. Allies were good. "I'm Kayleigh Murray. A first-generation Valkyrie Witch." "Valkyrie witch?" He asked taking her hand. "No questions until after the introductions." She insisted and he smiled lightly a light dimple indentation in his cheek flashing. "Christopher Sylvester. Beta, that is Second in Command of the pack," he said letting go of her hand. "Here." He pointed to the rock he was sitting on offering her a seat. "No thanks." She said putting her hand on her waist and rolling her neck. "So... Valkyrie Witch?" He raised a brow. "Yes. That's what happens when your dad is a Wizard and your mom is a Valkyrie" She explained. "You and Sky will suite each other. He's a hybrid too." "Yes. And he's proud and chauvinistic. The nerve of that man." Her eyes blazed as she bent by the waist till she was touching her toes. "Proud? Yes. Arrogant? You bet. But Chauvinistic, he is definitely not." "Not Chauvinistic?" She straightened. "The son of a bloody bachelor is forcing me to stay here claiming 'I need protection'" She growled "How is that not chauvinistic?" "When werewolves are at war, it endangers more people than others. We don't usually fight ourselves but when it happens, it happens bad. And the people at most danger are the Lunas" He explained. "Why is that?" "Cause as long as a wolf has found its mate, loosing that mate will either make it go crazy or become a killing machine with no life nor emotion. Some lesser wolves even commit suicide" He explained. "That wolf bond sounds like more of a curse." She bent to the right stretching her left hand over her head. "Depends on how you look at it. I don't think it's a curse but let's not get into that. Sky has to protect you or risk losing you and even I can't see myself doing the other." "That's exactly it. I do not need protecting. I have paralyzed more paranormal species in my life than I care to count. I'm sure I can handle a few wolves." She stretched the other way. "You have no idea how strong wolves really are do you?" He chuckled lightly. "You've probably not faced a higher wolf." "You're a higher wolf, aren't you?" She straightened, hands on her waist looking straight at him and he nodded carefully. "How about we have a go at it. You win, I stay here without a simple complaint. You lose, well, I get to go home." "No can do, princess. I do not relish a show down with Skyler nor do I want to hurt you." "You can't hurt me." She scoffed and shaking his head he stood up. "Come on. I'll walk you home." He said and started walking ahead. "So that's a no to my negotiation?" She asked as she followed. "Even if I would have a go at you which of course I won't, it's still Sky's choice to make whether you stay or you leave. I can't do anything about it." She groaned. They walked silently then following a path Kayleigh didn't know but she paid attention. She needed all the information she could get. In less time than it took her, she found herself at the other side of the house. "That was quick." She commented."It took me about twice the time to get there than it took to come back." "That's because you used the longer path. I'll have to leave you here. I highly doubt Sky would be happy to see us together after yesterday." "What happened yesterday?" Was it normal to have a matehood misunderstanding? "I thought you said you didn't want to talk about it." "I'm curious." She shrugged. "I'm not sure." He replied in a whisper "There was just a bit of misunderstanding. And for some reason," he looked her in the eye now like he was trying to figure her out, "it's not clear yet." "I didn't understand what you just said and since I'm not sure I want to," she stretched out her hands "to friends?" "To friends." He shook it then chuckled. It was a marvelous sound. "Sky is pissed at you. He's pacing. You didn't tell him you were going out?" "How do you know that?" "All werewolves of a pack are telepathically linked one way or another." He explained. "Well, I'm also pissed." She said and laughing, Chris turned and walked away giving her a small wave over his shoulder.
