NIKOLAI
I stood over the woman, unable to take my eyes off her.
She was beautiful.
Fucking beautiful.
And it was driving both me and Drax so crazy I had to shift back to my human form before he would do something stupid.
Something stupid like….marking her.
The spot I had taken her to was the spot I and Justin usually went to, each time we raced into the woods. And we also kept clothes there.
One of which I had covered her with because only being close to her was already messing with me in ways I could not even begin to explain.
“What happened?” She groaned, getting up from the soft grass where she lay.
Damn.
Even her voice.. The sound of it had my ears peaking.
“You fainted.” I replied, stepping back a little to create a little distance between us. “You passed out after that arrow almost hit you.” I explained. I wondered who had shot that arrow and got pissed. If I hadn’t been there in time, it would have killed her.
But I couldn’t help the question that filtered into my mind next. What had she been been doing in the woods as such an odd hour anyway?
She frowned in confusion, pouting her soft-looking lips as she seemed to be in deep thought. “Oh, f**k!” She stood up immediately, her eyes wide as she looked around in the dark.
There was no way she could see anything beyond where we stood. “Who are you?” She asked with a hint of malice in her tone.
I raised a brow.
“Nikolai. My name is Nikolai.” Could she not tell I was her mate? Wasn’t it supposed to be an instant attraction?
Wasn’t it how the whole mate thing worked? She sees me, and I see her, and she screams ‘’mate’ like the way Drax did, and then we lock lips and other organs…
So why was she staring at me like I was some kind of predator?
And she couldn’t even say thank you.
“Who are you?” I asked also. At least I deserved to know my mate’s name if she had chosen not to acknowledge me.
She hesitated for a little while before answering me. “Sasha.” She turned and looked into the darkness. “Thanks Nikolai, for saving me. But I have to go!” I didn’t like the tone of her voice. It’s hounded like she couldn’t wait to get the hell out of where we were. But why?
I’m your…
I sniffed and didn’t even smell a wolf on her, which was baffling to me.
“Wait! You can't rush into the dark like that.” I said, stopping her and turning her around so she could face me.
That was a mistake.
The world around me suddenly disappeared as we locked gazes, staring into each other’s eyes like our lives depended on it.
Mate.
Yes.
Her flesh burned under my equally burning palm. I drew her close to me and almost sighed in relief since she didn’t object, stepping close to me.
I wanted to kiss her.
Caress her.
Mark her.
Fuck!
“I…” she started to say, licking her plump lips. My nostrils flared as I saw the movement of her tongue against her lower lip. I wanted it to be my own tongue, tracing the seas of her lips. “I don’t understand what’s going on. I don’t know you, but I feel like if I don't kiss you, I’m going to cease existing.” She murmured, eyes glued to my lips.
Same here, mate.
I wasted no time, pulling her closer so she was pressed against me, and crashed my lips onto hers.
Fucking hell!
It started like a slow burn, but it grew into scorching heat as my whole inside exploded just from the sensation of her lips on mine.
Her hands came up and flattened against my chest. My muscles tightened in return. I deepened the kiss and knew the exact moment my very hard length, pressed against her stomach.
SASHA
He was supposed to be the enemy. Right?
I knew he was a werewolf…
But why did being close to him feel so…right?
The pull had been so strong and I felt so much heat in me. So much that it had taken a lot of strength to try to run away. His voice alone was enough to send me to my knees.
What was happening to me?
Nikolai’s hand squeezed my waist, and I moaned into his lips, pressing into him. I should be frightened, but he stirred so much in me.
He pulled away from my lips, trailing soft kisses down my neck. “Sasha…” he whispered.
And it felt like I had been drawn brutally back into reality. I pushed at him with all my might, catching him by surprise. “Stay the f**k away from me.” I said in a low voice, still cautious of my environment.
I needed to go back home, necklace or not!
“Sasha, wait. You are m_” I cut him off. Not wanting to even hear what he wanted to say.
“Save it! I’m out of here.” I said in a rush, tossing the big shirt that he had put over me. I heard him hiss, but I wasn’t interested. Instead, turning my back towards him and taking off into the woods. I was a very fast runner.
Very fast.
Strangely, even after I was a long distance away from him, I still heard him whisper my name. I blinked and shook my head, before lowering myself into the water. I was sure it was just a little hallucination.
Who wouldn’t hallucinate after such a drugging kiss?
James Torres was going to skin me alive if he heard that I had not only crossed the boundary, but had kissed a werewolf.
If only I could remember the hunters’ mantra.
The werewolves are your enemies.
“Is she still sleeping?” I heard my aunt walk into my room, with my father following behind.
Oh dear!
Was I in trouble?
Had they seen me the previous night?
My father was never around at this time of the day, especially not in my room.
I had even slept in because of the weird holiday they had given everyone.
I faked a yawn and stretched, pretending to have just woken up. “Good morning father.” I nodded at him, not looking him in the eye. “Good morning aunt.” I turned to my aunt with a small smile.
“I know you are on a break, Sasha. But a good hunter should always be on guard.” He hardly smiled.
I nodded my head, not uttering a word as I sat up on my bed. There was no use saying anything to James Torres. Especially when it comes to defending yourself over what he thinks is wrong or right. Whichever the case may be.
“Oh, James. Let the poor girl be.” Aunt Olivia scolded my father lightly huffing and setting my refilled flask on the table before coming to sit beside me.
I eyed the flask, wondering where my uncle was. He was usually the one to bring it to me. “Where’s uncle Riley?” I asked the both of them, reaching for the flask. I enjoyed the warmth it gave my palms.
“Your uncle is busy, Sasha.” My father answered, pulling away from the door where he had been standing. “There is something we need to tell you.” He said, coming to stand in front of me.
I frowned, looking from him to my aunt, who just kept smiling. “You’ll like it, sweetie.” She said, looking excited. Okay I was beginning to share her excitement with her.
“You see…we had a meeting yesterday, Sash. And we decided a selected few from the high level nine and level eights would be given a test to show us what they got. If they pass, they will all be automatically moved to level eleven. And you know what that means.”
What the!
Of course I knew what it meant!
It was everyone’s goal and dream to be on such a prestigious level some day.
But it was kinda odd….and insane!
“But father! That is almost impossible! Moving from level nine to level eleven?” I shook my head. I could already see failure right in front of me. “But..why?”
What was going on?
My father's expression changed to a hard one. “You have thirty hours to prepare, Sasha.” He turned and started to walk away. “I'd advise you to pay more attention to archery.”
And just like that, he was gone.
So was my aunt, who at least blew me a kiss on her way out.
NIKOLAI
I kissed her!
I kissed my mate!
And she ran away!
“Nikolai, you have to calm down. You will see her again.” Justin said from behind me.
How was I supposed to be calm? Sasha had run away from me like the kiss was nothing. I understood we had just met, but…
“Are you being serious? She’s on the other freaking side! The same place that is off limits to us! And she’s not even a wolf!” It was already falling apart before it began. At least she wasn’t interested
“What do you mean she’s not a wolf?” Justin asked, and I finally turned to face him.
“Are you forgetting that it’s humans on the other side? I didn’t even smell even a hair of a wolf on her.” Which was extremely weird.
People have been mated to humans and every other being on earth. But not a Mystic Wood Alpha.
Never a Mystic Wood Alpha.
I had no problem with it, but this was a first. The worst part was the fact that she was in the most forbidden place for us.
I felt crushed within me. It was like I had been given something so beautiful, only to get it snatched away from me so brutally.
“That’s why I’m telling you to calm down and think this through, brother.” Justin ran a hand through his hair. “I really need to go now, some of the sentinels are waiting for me.”
I nodded. “It’s fine. I guess we’ll talk later then.”
I waited for the door to close before slamming my hand on my desk in anger.
What kind of game was the moon goddess playing at?
Although it didn't still change the longing I felt inside of me.
