SASHA
I just smiled as I hit the horn of my truck, trying to signal the very slow driver in front to move. I hated it when people just thought they could do whatever they liked on the road. Some of us had places to go!
“Calm down Sasha, or you will blow our ears out too.” Keith said, from behind me, laughing at my frustration. Sometimes I just wanted to smack him.
“Oh, just forget it Keith, she won’t listen to you. It’s the guy at the front you should be talking to.” Elena drawled in a very bored tone. From the mirror, I could see her eyes glued to the screen of her phone.
She knew me very well.
“Finally!” I exclaimed in relief as the guy finally picked up his pace, and finally took a detour to the right.
We were on our way out of town to get the supplies we needed for the test. Keith and Elena also qualified, so they had opted to go with me.
I knew within me, that behind their laughter, they were as nervous as I was.
In just a few hours, we were going to be going through some of the toughest challenges that come with being hunters.
“There.” Keith pointed forward as I looked for a spot to park in. “There’s a spot behind those two cars.” He said.
I looked at where he was pointing at, puzzled. It was a straight line, and even if there was a spot, I should have been the one to see it and not him.
“Keith, I can’t even see anything. How sure are you that there is a spot there?” I queried. But I still drove towards it. With Keith, I was always expecting the unexpected.
“Just drive Sasha.” True to his word, there was a spot. And I slipped into it without hesitation.
It was hard to find parking spots at the store on weekends.
“I won’t even ask how you saw that.” Elena said, sighing and leaving the car first, heading towards the store.
I looked at Keith who just shook his head, frowning.
“Is there something wrong?” I asked, switching off the engine.
Something was wrong. I knew it. The expression on his face said it all.
Keith shook his head. “You won’t understand, Sash. You won’t.” He replied and left the car too, heading in after his sister.
Odd.
Those twins were weird sometimes. And being their friend, it affected me.
Before we had gotten in, I had noticed a little quietness between the both of them. Usually, Keith would have preferred to sit in the back with Elena, but he had sat in the front with me.
The last thing we needed now was any kind of issues among us. We had a test to face for heaven’s sake!
I alighted from the vehicle, closed the door, and headed for the door.
Once inside, I walked straight to the hardware department, pulling out my list from my pocket. The thing with hunting is, we didn't just hunt werewolves. We also hunted for our weapons, and made some from scratch.
Pheew.
“Sasha, you have just one more chance and you are out. You have already passed every other challenge. Don’t throw it all away.” My uncle said, a few feet away from where I stood, nervous and trying not to shake.
Why was archery so difficult for me?
As far back as I could remember, I was always so bad at it. I never thought it was going to be my final obstacle on any level test. Sometimes, I did wonder why we needed to learn such in the 21st century when we had guns and other stuff.
My arms still hurt from all the training I had been doing for the past thirty hours since my father came with the news.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, lifting the bow and arrow and pointing it towards my target.
For a split second, a very clear image of Nikolai flashed into my head. The very image of what his face looked like just before he dipped his head down and took my lips in his.
Because I was caught off guard by the memory of that night, I lost my grip on the arrow, releasing it.
My eyes widened in fear as the arrow flew through the air, heading for the target. Damn. I had messed up. My father was going to kill me.
It wasn’t until there was an uproar in the crowd as people screamed in celebration, that I realized that I had hit the target, right in the very center of it, beating everyone on my level, and breaking a record amongst the hunters.
“I knew you could do it, girl!” Uncle Riley came and lifted me up, twirling me around.
I couldn’t believe it!
I had passed. I had f*****g passed.
I looked at my dad who was sitting with the rest of the panel, a short distance away from me, and smiled when he gave me a single nod, and a very slight smile.
My heart beat heavily against my chest as I continued to stand there in wonder.
I had passed!
NIKOLAI
“Going to that damn bar wouldn’t solve the problems we are facing, Justin.” I said in a bored tone and picked up my leather jacket. I was going into town, but certainly not to a bar!
“At least it would cool off some steam.” He had been trying to persuade me for the last ten minutes, and I wasn’t having it.
Neither was Drax, who was currently not on good terms with me. I mean, how could he? We had set out last night, combing through the woods as we searched for Sasha. I had even camped there, ignoring my duties as the alpha of the pack.
I had been hoping she would come around again. But it was shattered when I had stayed till dawn, warming myself with my own fur.
It has been stupid, but I couldn’t control myself.
I needed something to get my mind off my situation.
“Fine.” I replied, opening the door and standing aside so my brother could pass.
He punched through the air in joy. “Good! We gonna paint the club red!” Justin, who could be a clown sometimes, danced ahead of me, making me chuckle.
Sometimes, I wished I had the carefree spirit my brother had. It would have saved me a lot of stress and pressure.
I needed to get my mind off Sasha. At least until I had solved the issue I had in the pack. Despite the fact that things like these happened often, it wasn't supposed to be taken lightly.
We got to the club shortly after, with Justin singing along to a song that blasted through the speakers of the car.
The club was full, and from the different scents that wafted through the air, I could tell it was filled with both humans and werewolves.
“I’ll go grab a drink, man.” Justin informed me in a raised voice, heading for the bar.
I actually loved having a good time every now and then, but I just wasn’t in the mood this particular evening. I hoped that after a few shots, I would loosen up.
At least, that was what Justin thought. And I needed to believe him.
I followed him to the bar and found him already doing shots with a stranger. Typical Justin.
“Can I join the party?” I forced some cheer into my voice and took a stool once the two men nodded.
“Hi, I’m Tristian.” The stranger said, bringing his hand out for a handshake. I smiled and took his hand in mine, immediately feeling its roughness against mine. I could tell he was tough.
“I’m Nikolai.” I replied. He smiled and turned back to Justin, lifting another shot to his lips.
There was something off about him.
Either that, or it was just the atmosphere as a whole.
I adjusted my jacket and sat down. 'Who’s this guy?' I asked Justin, using our mind link, and grabbed my own shot. It was one of the advantages of being a shifter.
We were telepathic.
And being from a long line of Alpha’s, I and Justin could talk to each other without anyone hearing us, or even going into our heads. Not even a werewolf. Or a Witch.
“I don’t know him. Came up to me and asked for shot battles.” Justin replied. “I’m engaging him because he feels really off.”
“Well, it’s a good thing that you aren’t going to get drunk after all those shots you are tossing into your stomach.” I envied my brother when it came to alcohol. The highest it could do was make him feel tingly. It was a trait passed by our mother.
While I on the other hand….
Hah!
“Relax, I’ll handle him. We are here to have fun. Good vibes only.” He said, pouring me a glass.
All the while we talked, Tristan sat there, smiling and oblivious to what was going on in our heads.
Justin engaged in a conversation with him, removing his attention from me.
I emptied the contents of my cup into my mouth, scanning the environment. I felt bored.
Tristan suddenly got up. “s**t! It was nice meeting you both. I gotta go.” And just like that, he disappeared.
I shook my head. “Hunter.” I said flatly, shrugging my shoulders at Justin.
“No s**t!” My brother replied, throwing a slice of lime in his mouth. “I think I need to pee.” He said, getting up and going off in the direction of the bathroom.
It wasn’t illegal to be a shifter. But these so-called hunters intentionally went after us, claiming to ‘hunt’ those who involved themselves in criminal activities.
I always call bullshit!
I knew some werewolves, especially the young ones, usually went around looking for trouble...but still..
If I had a chance to get to any of those hunters, I was going to kill him or her with my bare hands.
Many of our kind had been arrested, tortured, and some even missing.
I hissed, picking up another glass and emptying it into my mouth. The heat as it went down my throat, was welcome.
The sound of melodious laughter, coming from the entrance of the club, filtered into my ears. And I turned to face the direction the sound was coming from.
Sasha.
