Amber's POV
I could not tell for how long Iaid there until I slept off. Suddenly someone banged on the door disrupting my sleep. I awoke with a jolt and sat up immediately.
Could it be that Brady owed more people? I wondered but another knock intruded in my thoughts.
"Open up now! I know you are in there." A deep rich masculine baritone voice roared on the other side of the door.
I rose up and took slow strides towards the door but paused in my tracks at the thought of more debtors trooping in. Where would I get such a ludicrous amount from? How many more people did Brady owe?
I darted my eyes to the bedroom door as a thought occured to me. Locking myself in the room was a good thought but the door wasn't strong enough to shield me from the angry man outside.
"You had better open up before my men break down this door." The stranger threatened without even giving me the chance to recover from the shock.
I knew that this was no joke. Fear of the unknown thrummed in my heart. My fingers trembled as I clenched them around the doorknob and my throat constricted.
"I said open it!" He banged in growing frustation.
Fear gripped my very core, making me shiver. I swallowed my anxiety and twisted the knob with all the strength in my body. A gasp escaped my lips when a tall angry looking handsome man yanked my hands away from the door and entered without even waiting for an invitation to come in.
He looked so familiar but I didn't get the chance to process his face because five hefty men in dark suits just like him followed him in and the apartment suddenly felt small. I sucked in breaths as I watched them file into my apartment. They fixed their stony glares at me and remained silent.
In confusion, I turned to the man who had led them in. It was evident that he was their leader.
"Pl-please who are you and how may I help you?" I asked in a faint voice, trying to sound as bold as possible but I was far from bold.
I gripped the doorknob hard for support while wondering what could have gone wrong. This man had undone every last shred of my strength and I would applaud myself if I didn't faint or do something stupid soon.
"I am Alpha Ace Montgomery and I will be your worst nightmare." He snarled at me in a harsh terrifying voice which sent fear crawling inside me.
No wonder he looked rich. However what was a famous man like him doing in my cockroach infested apartment. This room and the entire building was beneath him. It was so evident.
My brows knitted in more confusion. I had never in my twenty-four years had anything to do with him or these men. Or did he mistake me for another person? It could be very much possible.
"You have the wrong person, please leave or I will be forced to call the police on you." I threatened, trying to put up a bold face.
I wished they could just leave. I touched my hand to my forehead when I felt a looming headache. My belly growled in hunger but I didn't have the appetite for anything at the moment. I just needed time alone to sort out my new life but the tall muscular man before me didn't agree with me.
"Far from it, woman. You will sit down and sign these papers or I swear to God if you do not do so, I will make your life miserable just like that pathetic loser, Brady made mine a few hours ago when he murdered my younger brother!" Ace swore and dropped a file on the table before me.
Like cold water sluicing down my skin, the realization finally hit me. I turned around immediately, choking back a gasp. In my panicky state, it didn't occur to me that Brady had killed people in his carelessness.
"I'm-"
"I do not need your apology. Your apologies will only rouse my anger. I do not have the time to waste nor will I accept them as I intend to exact revenge in ways you never imagined."
His eyes were filled with malice and his voice dripped venom shaking me to the core.
"By the time I am done with you Amber Walker, you would beg for death. Now, sign the damned paper right now before I lose my temper!" Ace growled in anger.
I watched him curl his fists and he banged them into the wall in anger.
"Sign the goddamn papers!" He raged.
"Oh no. I can't sign this. My hus-husba-band killed them, not me. Please-" I shook my head in disapproval while reading through the contract.
Why did I have to pay for Brady's sins? And just when I thought I was finally free from Brady and his abuse, why did this stranger waltz into my life demanding that I sign myself as his fiancee and nephew's nanny?
"Really?" Ace scoffed and released a peal of harsh laughter from his throat.
"Do you really think I care? I don't care! Sign that paper or-" Ace was interrupted by one of his men who whispered a few words in his ear.
"Bring him in." A sinister smirk grazed his face immediately.
My hands flew to my mouth when I saw two men drag my younger brother into the room with force.
"What have you do-done Amber?" He looked so terrified.
"Your husband had the nerve to kill my younger brother, Venita, his pregnant wife, and my nephew is lying down in the ICU battling for his life!" Ace banged his right hand on my small table causing goosebumps and fear to wash over me.
I gulped hand, fisting my nightgown in my right hand and praying that this was all a dream.
"I'd be damned if I do not avenge their deaths. Now before I change my mind, take that pen and sign the contract." He snarled at me before yanking Tom by the neck.
"Please, let him go. This is-is between us." I pleaded in tears.
"Oh really? You have less than three minutes to sign that paper. Or else, you won't see your brother again. You should be grateful I haven't reciprocated your husband's gesture yet." Ace extended his hand to retrieve a gun from one of his men.
I swallowed hard. Never had I been this torn before. This man wasn't joking. A myriad of emotions coursed through me. I was confused. Angry. Sad.
"Don't sign it, Amber. Drop that pen right now." Tom said.
"Brady killed your family! My sister won't pay for this!" Tom argued.
Everything was happening so fast and I wished time would stop so I could think it through.
He pointed it at Tom while tilting his head towards the paper. Taking a glance at his watch, he c****d the gun and said "I could help you make your decision faster. Less than two minutes to go or I will blow his brains out." He threatened in a stony voice that sent chills down my throat.
Any resolve and obstinacy I had melted away as I picked up the pen to sign it.
"Don't sign that Amber, you'll be in-" Tom warned me but it was too late.
"Please let him go, I have signed it. I scribbled my signature on the line and wiped away the tears from my eyes.
Ace yanked the paper from me and shoved Tom towards me while he perused the paper and folded it into his breast pocket.
"Get ready to leave Miami by tomorrow." He instructed.
"What?" My brother gasped in shock.
"You heard me right." Ace gritted his teeth.
I nodded in defeat wrapping my right hand around Tom's wrist to prevent him from doing anything stupid. This was a war we couldn't win. Powerful men like Ace didn't need to repeat their orders; neither did they make empty threats. I had no choice but to obey him or it would be disastrous.
Ace covered the space between us and leaned in closer to whisper into my ears. His rich musky cologne wafted into my nostrils. For some unknown reason I liked how he smelt and the effect he had on me.
His thick masculine voice jolted me back to reality as I braced myself for his harsh words.
"Just a little advice for you before I leave. If you so much love your brother and every relation you have on earth, do not even harbor the thoughts of running away. There is nowhere on earth I won't find you, Amber." He drawled my name with a sinister smile on his face.
I let out a shaky breath when he turned around. My legs wobbled underneath her and I lowered myself to the sofa in defeat as Ace walked out of the room with his men filing after him. True to his words, my nightmare had just started.
