Esme's POV
It's been at least a week now and Athena and I were getting into a nice little routine here. She would let me make her breakfast for her before I left for work. She would also help me by telling me different things to add or show me other things to cook that I'd never thought of using. She has also shown me some pretty simple recipes just because, why not?
And when I got back she would tell me to go grab a shower while she cooked or order something for us. Honestly, she was the sweetest woman I have ever met.
When I come out of the bathroom and into the room, I might add my new room. We finally repainted the walls and removed the carpet and had a new carpet put in that matched the drapes she picked out. One for the window over the sink in the kitchen and one for the window over by the TV. The full-sized bed was replaced with a queen and she got me a wooden oak frame with a dresser and two nightstands to match, even though I told her not to, the dresser that was in here may not have fit all of my clothes but it was fine.
But she told me, that a lady like myself who is living in a dump like this deserved to sleep in comfort all around her. As sweet as it was, I had to remind her that this place wasn't a dump, we both would bring it back to it's original status. It just needed a little make-over and some polish, then she would shine like she used to.
I hung my towel on the bathroom door, the light on the front desk made the lights in my bedroom flash red.
I hated that feature. Made me feel like I was having a mini seizure when it happened. Athena said they weren't supposed to do that, they were supposed to just turn it off if on and turn on if off, if we had a customer.
I grabbed my hair brush and brushed my hair before I slipped on a house coat. It was windy when I got home so I was sure it was gonna rain later tonight if it wasn't already. I grabbed my keys and my dexcom, slipped on some shoes, then went for the door.
I shivered at the brisk wind as it picked up more. I locked my bedroom door as the wind whisked my hair around, I removed a piece as it got stuck in the corner of my mouth, then quickly made my way towards the front where I knew Athena would be.
I got to the front lobby right before it began raining cats and dogs outside. "Hey ma, I think we'll be getting a few people tonight. " I told her, seeing a couple of vehicles pull into the parking lot after I got into the dry area.
I turned to her, wondering why she was so quiet. She was never this quiet.
When I did, four huge men stood at the front desk. Two were black. One was of Hispanic ethnicity, the last one was white and one of his eyes...you could tell he was blind in it. He had a scar going across the eye. I assume that's how he went blind in it.
"Mami!" The Mexican guy rubbed his hands together, then rubbed his chin. Could someone tell him he looked like a fly doing that? It wasn't attractive!
I rolled my eyes and moved around the hoard of men, I went over to where Athena was and she wrapped her arm around my waist behind the counter. "Easy senorita, I don't bite. Much!" He added what I assume to be a playful growl to it? Whatever that was, it didn't help his charm at all.
"She's off the table, fellas. Meaning don't look at her in any way, sexually or sweetly." Two of them raised their hands and backed away from her. The Mexican guy and the white guy were the ones that backed away.
"Man, I look at whoever I want however I want." The slightly bigger black man said and took a step forward. Athena was quick as she let me go, pushed me behind her some and pulled out a shotgun from under the countertop, pressed it to his chest, then c****d it. I had no idea that was there.
"You may want to listen to her. I tried a girl that she told me not to. Now look at my face." The white guy said. The other two guys stepped off so she lowered her shotgun.
Athena leaned to my ear. "Take out is in the back office. I'll be in there in a minute." I nodded my head and left her so she could deal with them. I spotted the bags on the coffee table across from her couch, so I went over and sat down.
I opened one of the bags and instantly smelled onions. That one was definitely Athena's food. I hated onions. I closed that one and grabbed the other one and pulled out the food.
She got me a double cheeseburger with fries. Oh, these carbs men are gonna kick in later.
I took out my phone and went through a few emails for work as I ate. I emailed my boss his new list of meetings for tomorrow. He was going to be really busy tomorrow afternoon all the way to late in the evening.
When the door to the back office opened about fifteen minutes later, I was already finished with my fries and half finished with my cheeseburger.
"Everything copesthetic out there?" I asked and she sighed as she came over and sat down in the chair by the couch.
"All good. And I'm sorry about them, I was hoping to be done with them before you came in."
"It's fine, you told me I would be alright and I trusted you." I reassured her. "Besides, I was only freaked out by the white dude's eye!" I laughed.
We then got to talking about our day, well more me rather than her.
I went on to tell her how I had to beat Zeke over the head with my newspaper because he kissed me while I was talking him out of asking me out on another date. She thought it was hilarious, so did my boss, who witnessed the poor incident occur after I told him no three times already when he kept mentioning it.
The bell rang at the front desk for the fifth time tonight. Athena got up and grumbled under her breath. All I could do was laugh at her because she did that every time someone rang the bell. It was usually busy with some crackheads renting a room for the night so they can get high, but tonight seemed to be a Tuesday night special for those four guys that came in earlier.
I could only imagine what Athena would do if this place was up in full swing, and if she would still grumble then.
I glanced down at the time and saw that it was still too early to go to bed. Athena popped her head back in with a smirk on her face.
"It's for you!"
My brows pinched together. Nobody knew i was here except for Zeke. I grabbed my things and got up. I went up to her whispering like we were teenagers. "Who is it?" I giggled lightly and my face felt heated for some reason.
"Go and see yourself." She walked back into the office and swatted my ass when she went past me, causing me to jump. I swatted at her as she scrambled over to the chair she was in so she could finish her food.
I opened the door wider and turned back to the person in front of the desk. I froze. Why was he here? How did he know I was here? Did he follow me?
"This was sent up to my desk after you left. It has your name on it!" He mused and shook the box lightly. My cheeks flushed as I stepped closer to him.
"How did you know where to find me?" I asked him quietly and took the box from him. I knew what it was, it was more sensors. I wanted as little communication as I could get with Zeke as I could get, so I changed the delivery address to my place of work. I would have to see about changing it again to have them sent here instead.
"My friend was here the day you fell in the pool! He told me!" He looked away from me and scratched his head. Why was he agitated? I was the one living in a motel, with his friends seeing me falling drunk in the pool.
"Oh" Is all I could think to say in response. He pointed to the box and asked, "May I ask? What is it that you didn't want Zeke seeing?"
I raised an eyebrow at him, then chuckled. Like this package was some big secret or something. I opened it up and showed him the box that was inside of it.
"Is your mom sick or something?" I laughed again.
"No, if it was for my mother, it would have her name and her mailing address on the box. Not mine." He nodded, but I knew he still wasn't following. I waved him off and shook my head. If the topic came up again I would explain more. But I wasn't in the mood for a medical lesson.
He gave me a sweet smile which was odd because he usually smirked at me or gave me amusing or lust-filled gazes. "Could I talk with you?" Xavier looked at the open door behind me. "Privately, I mean?"
Before I could say anything, Athena did. "Girl go, he's cuter than that other man that keeps coming up here bothering me!" I rolled my eyes as I looked at her over my shoulder.
She knew who this man was. I told her what he and I did and that I was really sexually attracted to him. She popped a cold french fry into her mouth and looked back down at her phone.
"Please?"
"If this is about my medicine being delivered to the office building, I'm sorry. I changed the address the night I left the apartment so th-"
"I don't care about that." I looked up from his chest that I was staring at. A habit I tend to do when I rumble so I wouldn't have to make eye contact with the person.
His green eyes swirled around my face as he studied me. He looked down at the box my hand rested on, the question there, but he refused to ask it, like he didn't want to pry too much into my personal life.
"Why don't I show you the small dining hall that ma and I are fixing up?" I told him, grabbing my box off the counter. "Let's stop by my room first so I can drop this off." He smiled when I walked past him.
My stomach clenched with nerves as he followed me out of the front lobby. It was starting to rain again. It let up some but it was beginning to rain once again. "This place is quiet!" He muttered behind me. I nodded my head. I enjoyed it when I was here with Athena. It wasn't as loud as the city was because we were close to the woods somehow. A place that should be more than an hour away from city life is a mere twenty minutes from it.
Getting to my room, I unlocked the door and we walked in. I shivered as the air conditioning it my skin was damp due to the rain droplets. I went over and opened up a drawer in my nightstand that held all of my medical supplies. Placing it under the one that was open, I straightened up when I was finished and faced him. He eyed the drawer curiously but I closed it so he would stop trying to be nosey and just ask me what he wanted to know.
"Ready?" He asked me, looking up to meet my gaze. I nodded my head and picked up my jacket from the end of my bed and slipped it on.
He offered me his hand and I bit my lip as I looked down at it. "You said you wanted to talk, what might it be about?" I asked him and stepped beside him by the door. He dropped his arm by his side with a grin as he opened the door for me.
"Us!" He said and walked out ahead of me when I didn't move. I stared at his back as he moved out of my room. The loud boom of thunder made me follow after him. I had only just stepped out when I bumped into him.
"Sorry sir." I apologized. Placing my hands on his back to push myself away from him.
"Do. Not. Move." Xavier said each word slowly, and his voice was low, almost like a predator warning it's prey with its growl.
His words were laced with venom and wariness while he stood in front of me.
