Chapter 9

1101 Words
Curling back onto her pillows and the warmth of Tertius’s body, Crystal pulled the duvet up to her chin when a voice sounded from the door. “So, are you ever gonna get your lazy out of the room?” Squinting through her narrowed eyes, she glared at the one disturbing her peace. “Bugger off, Jasz!” Her temper however, seemed to have absolutely no effect on her cousin, causing her to just become more irritable as she tried to pull the covers entirely over her head this time. Jasz however would have none of it and pulled at the bottom of the duvet to open her up once more. “Hey Missy! You do know that it’s like three in the afternoon already? What happened to your morning run?” “Urgh! You’re such a pain Jasz!” As she tried sitting up and swung her legs to the side of the bed, Crystal gasped in surprise, grabbing, and pulling the duvet back up for another turn. “Tertius, what the hell did you guys do to my clothes?!” This time, the other angel in her bed had the good grace to look slightly ashamed. “You looked uncomfortable, so we were trying to help?” “Jasz! OUT! What the hell, Tertius, I can’t go walking around in my damn underwear!” Her words had her cousin turning bright red before he darted out at the speed of lightning. Comprehension seemed to dawn on Tertius as he looked from her to where Jasz had disappeared. “O, s**t, yah. I, erm, I didn’t really think of that when Brad had made the suggestion.” Groaning loudly, she sank back on the pillows with the duvet hiding her blushing face, when again the duvet got pulled away, this time by a much gentler hand. “Hey, if it’ll help, I’ll go get you a shirt or something to wear? Then you can escape to your room no one the wiser?” The innocent gentleness in his eyes and face brought her smile back to her face. “Thanks. You really are a dear.”   It was about 30 minutes later when Crystal came down the stairs. From the sounds (and smells)  of the bickering voices coming from the kitchen, it seemed like Brad had ordered the cookout and was preparing something for her to eat, with a very disgruntled Jasz having to supervise and assist in pointing out where things where stored. The sounds of a pot or pan hitting a wall, followed by well-chosen swear words, made it clear that the arrangement hadn’t worked out and a moment later a very angry Jasz appeared in the hallway to the living room. “The asshole doesn’t want my help! Says he knows what you AND his sister would love to eat! As if I don’t get a say in what to make for my mate! Apparently my food isn’t healthy enough for the both of you!” The total absurdity of the situation however had the totally different effect on Crystal, who burst out laughing joined in moments by the sounds of both Tertius and Vanessa’s laughs. Jasz threw his hands in the air before disappearing up the stairs, most likely to visit the lady in question. Shaking her head, Crystal decided to take the safe road and went to the living room awaiting her delivery of food. Suddenly the voice of Trent sounded in her mind link. “Alpha, we’ve got a situation! Fire at the old McLaren’s farm. The chief has requested our help again.” Shit! Of all the rotten luck! “Thanks Trent. You contact the rest of the crew, I’ll meet them in front of the pack house, it’s closer than my place.” Turning around, she found the concerned eyes of Tertius on her with a questioning look. “I’m sorry man! I need to go. Will you tell Brad please? I don’t have all your gear here, else I would have taken you with, but...” Whatever she wanted to say was interrupted by a severe growl from the kitchen. “You’re not going anywhere!” “Leave me alone Brad! You’re NOT the Alpha here! This is my pack and they need my help!” “You’re exhausted, you haven’t eaten, your body needs to still heal from the last expedition. You’re NOT going!” “And you might be my mate, but you’re NOT my boss! Now leave me the hell alone so I can do my job! I’ve been Alpha for 10 years, I’ve coped and I’m a damn good one for that matter, I don’t need your interference! Back off!” The previous jovial atmosphere had suddenly taken a very charged electric feeling. Jasz and Aiden cautiously stepped into the room, flanking Crystal on both sides, eyes darting between the rogue Alpha and theirs. With the last words rolling of, she ran out past Jasz and a shocked looking Vanessa who haven’t seen her cousin in such a state for a long time. She shifted into her blue wolf within moments of exiting the front door, clothes shredding into bits and pieces as she left. “Damn, she makes one flippen beautiful wolf.” Were the last words from Brad that she heard before entering the trees and rushing to where the crew was waiting for her. Crystal tried to ignore his words, but Blue was preening inside. At this time of the year, in the late autumn when it rarely rained, the grass started turning brown, there was no time to waste. A planted land of crops could get burned to the ground in moments. If they wanted to help the old farmer safe anything, they had better run and run fast. No use taking the Jeep now, wolf-form would be quicker and easier. With a quick mind link, she asked Trinity to get her a change of clothes. Her friend new better than asking the Alpha-Luna any questions when she was in a mood such as this. When reaching the pack house everyone was ready and they only paused long enough to bind their clothes around their ankles before shifting and taking off towards the farm mentioned.
