Chapter 2

“So, care to tell me what all that to do on the border was about?” Crystal was in her study, inside their house when Jasz stepped into the room after ensuring the prisoner could not escape. “You heard him, he challenged me for the pack!” “You and I both know that’s s**t, Crys! You might have a temper, but you’re not THAT irresponsible to give into someone’s challenge for our pack without a second thought!” “So now I can’t fight someone just because you think it’s suspect?!” “Wow calm down woman! Damn, are you hormonal or what?!” “Jasz, leave her alone.” “Vanes! What are you doing up here?” “I used the lift that you installed for me. Now, you lot had better stop yelling, I swear they can hear you all the way to the pack house. What the heck’s going on?” “Why don’t you start by telling your brother there to keep his nose out of my damn business!” “Jasz, why don’t you go make us some tea? Then we can all have a nice chat.” Jasz shot one last look at the woman in front of the window before leaving, the slamming of the door the last sign of his own temper getting the best of him. Silence fell between the two. Typical of Vanessa though, she seemed in no hurry to break the silence, rolling her chair to one of the bookcases, she took down a book before settling in and starting the read. It was only when Crystal fell into a chair behind her desk with a load huff that she looked up again. “You wanna talk about it?” “He called me his mate.” “Ja, and?” “I don’t WANT a mate Nes!” “Sure you don’t.” Gesturing to the piles and piles of paperwork that needs to be done, Vanessa continued. “You want to be able to do all this work and handle all this stress and everything that comes with it, all by yourself. Sure, I believe you.” A small smile formed on Crystal’s lips, before walking over to her cousin, settling on the arm of the wheelchair, and pulling her into a hug. “Damn girl, I love you, you know that hey? You tend to put stuff into such nice perspective.” “Ja, ja, I know, and I love you too, but still doesn’t solve our problem. Is he or is he not your mate?” “I... I don’t know. Blue was all exited and stuff, and he had this aura of an Alpha. It even made her all meek and stuff, but I wasn’t paying attention to whether or not he was my mate.” “But he’s handsome?” A slight blush crept onto her cheeks and she avoided Vanessa’s searching eyes. Shrugging, Crystal moved away. “I guess so. He’s got nice eyes, like melted chocolate...” Realizing she was giving away too much, Crystal stopped talking mid-sentence, letting her thoughts trail of. “You like him.” It was a statement of fact, not a question. “It doesn’t matter if I do or don’t! He’s a rogue! And I cannot let him live! I should have killed him back at the border, I don’t know why I hadn’t done so! Now it will have to be a trial and such!” “You let him live because, of all the men you know, he’s the first to actively challenge you and you like it!” “Damn it Ness! It’s not about whether or not I like him! It’s... He’s a rogue!” “And? You’ve always been very accepting of rogues, as long as they don’t harm our people, we even have some living between us who use to BE rogues! I don’t get it! So you’re going to throw it all away, when so many of us WISH for a mate and you’re just throwing it all away?!” Whirling around towards her cousin, ready to get right into another battle of words, Crystal stopped the moment her eyes met those of her cousin, filled with so much pain and loneliness. “Damn, I’m sorry Cuz! I really am! I’m being selfish. I wish there were some way...” Gesturing towards the wheelchair, Crystal fell silent. Since they’ve been little kids, it was always the wheelchair that was Vanessa’s biggest struggle. She knows her cousin’s biggest wish was to find a mate, be a mum, but being stuck inside a house, in a chair all day and a lesbian to boot? She can’t even make normal friends, getting a girlfriend was near to impossible! It was difficult for her even after all these years. “Ya, you kind of are.” “I really AM sorry! Look, if it will make you feel better, I’ll go talk to him tomorrow okay? I just...I just have to think this through, maybe make a bit of a dent in this paperwork.” Seeing the look in her cousin’s face, she quickly added, “But I’ll make sure that Aiden and the rest treats him right till then, okay?” “Okay but promise me, you really WILL think about it?!” “I do. Will you make sure Jasz will go out and get us some food for the house today?” Just then the door opened and the one being spoken about, appeared in the doorway. “Someone called?” “No i***t. She said you have to go buy food, dumb ass.” Vanessa’s eyes were sparkling with mirth at her brother’s face at being addressed like that, and Crystal couldn’t contain her own laughter from bubbling up. Mam she loved these two people! How she wished that it could always be just like this, just the three of them. “Shopping! Man, I HATE shopping!” It was all it took for the two women’s laughter to bubble out and they were doubling over with tears streaming down their faces, while Jasz tried to look indignant for a while before he too joined in the fun.
