Chapter 7To say that dinner that Friday night was awkward would be an understatement. Hayden’s mother did her best to keep up the conversation, although the strain of doing so was evident to Hayden as he watched her twist her wedding ring. “How was your week?” she asked Kenny partway through the main course. “We haven’t seen much of you.” Kenny swallowed his mouthful of food. “Busy but mostly uneventful.” Hayden’s dad raised his gaze from his plate to regard Kenny but he didn’t say anything. The tenseness knotted Hayden’s stomach and he mostly just pushed the food around his plate. Although, frequent if surreptitious glances over at Kenny helped somewhat.
