DOWN THE GOLDMINE It was dark when they woke up and they had no idea what time it was. Alice said that you could tell it was morning by the sound of the men working in the new shafts. Jack was putting timber from the old mine workings onto the fire and Sam noticed for the first time that the cave they were in was high and narrow. “I think it’s a shaft they must have started once but didn’t finish,” said Alice. “They probably didn’t find any gold here, that’s why they don’t come any more.” Her voice echoed a little around the rocks. “But they might come back,” said Miriam looking worried. “They must know we’re here,” said Sam slowly. “We used the lift.
