THE PEOPLE’S CAFE. It didn’t take them long to walk across the Green, although every step seemed to make them more nervous. When they arrived outside the People’s Cafe, the door was shut and there were no lights on inside. “I was wrong. No-one’s here,” said Miriam. “Wait a minute. Why don’t we see?” Sam strode up to the red door and banged hard with his fist. To his surprise the door immediately swung open, and the first person they saw was Henry Horne. He was sitting at a table with Bill Rory. They both looked hungover. Sam knew exactly how long they’d celebrated in the Town Hall the night before and could imagine how much beer they’d drunk. They must have spent the night there and come over here while he was lying asleep on Miriam’s cushions. The two men had dark and angry expressions
