Chapter 1 I gulped in air as I sat up in the hospital bed, chest heaving, pulse racing, eyes clamped shut. ‘Concentrate on your breathing, Belinda. You’re going to be fine.’ The voice was brisk, matter of fact, one of the many nurses flitting in and out of my room while I recovered from the car accident that stole my sight. I clutched the coarse blanket covering my lap and shuddered. ‘I saw something.’ The nurse gently took hold of my head. ‘Honey, that’s wonderful. Open your eyes. Tell me what you see.’ Her voice resonated with excitement. I blinked back tears as I opened my eyes and found my sight blocked by a familiar and unrelenting black wall. ‘You don’t understand.
