Disaster aboard Destiny
Eli Wallace looked out the window of the Observation Deck, using the light from the FTL window to work using as little power as possible. The news wasn't good as he had spent a week trying to fix the stasis pod, and had finally determined with the help of the database that the damage was irreparable. The control board was completely fried, and even if he had the power to drop from FTL and get back in, there was no way he would be able to make a new one in the amount of time he had left.
He had already gone through a checklist for his last days aboard Destiny, putting a complicated block in place that not even he would be able to overwrite within the few days he might survive as he shut the life support down and segregated it as well.
Only emergency lighting was on, as he could not shut it off even if he wanted to, but was fortunate his calculations had accounted for the amount of power they used. It was miniscule compared to what they had available, and he was actually glad he wouldn't have to use a flashlight everywhere he went.
Surprisingly as he went into the first of the aeroponics bays they used to start growing plants, it was full to the brim of plants ready for transplanting. He had no idea how long they would process the CO2 he produced, if it would be able too. He also had no idea if he had enough water to keep them alive until the ship reached the next galaxy where there recharging star was located. Fortunately he had helped enough with the transplanting, that he knew exactly what to do in order to plant them in the main aeroponics bay. It would be a few weeks before they were able to produce any sort of food, and he could only hope that if he rationed them properly what little food he had would last that long.
He spent several hours planting everything that had already been growing, and was about to head back to the hydroponics area when he felt the ship shudder in a way he knew wasn't going to be good as it suddenly dropped out of FTL. Just as the ship returned to normal space, there was a second time the ship shuddered, and the emergency alarms began blaring all over the ship as the power went out completely. He knew whatever had happened was terrible news as he raced for the bridge to ascertain what had happened.
As soon as he arrived he saw his worst fears, as the power levels had dropped well into the reserve buffer he had created, and were down over 30 percent from where they had been just a few hours ago. It was also displaying a new hull breach, and when he saw which section it was in he knew it was a disaster worse than anything they could have predicted. The only good news was because power had already fallen below his preset limit, his program had shut down as the computers rebooted themselves. Most of the ship had lost power, and as soon as the diagnostics began, he knew why.
One of the two power generators that turned the Stellar Plasma into usable electricity had exploded, and that explosion had ruptured one of the three remaining tanks that the Plasma was stored in for use. The only good news was with the sudden drop in pressure, the containment system had isolated the other two tanks. The bad news was the Plasma had created a new hole in the ship, which left that entire section depressurized.
Just as he had figured out everything that was happening and began to try and formulate a plan, he heard voices in the corridor, and knew they weren't any of the crew. The stasis pods they had used had never lost power, that's the first thing he checked as the translation matrix began translating what they were saying for him.
"-cannot believe this ship is in this condition after only a few short years. I am telling you something disastrous happened and it has been far longer than anyone planned for us to be out here." a man was saying as they walked closer.
"I am not disagreeing with you, however it does us no good to speculate until we reach the bridge and can learn what that was and how much time has passed. Our primary goal must be to return to Terra." a woman said as they approached the bridge. "How did this become unlocked?" she asked as he heard them draw weapons.
Eli out his hands up, knowing what was coming. "I mean you no harm, please come in." he said before the translator worked its magic and broadcast what he said while displaying the Alterran text for him as well. It was the first time he had heard it spoken and known what it said, which was the first key he needed to begin speaking the language himself.
Three people slowly entered the bridge, all of them with a weird looking weapon pointed at him as they began looking at the consoles.
"How did you get aboard?" the woman demanded as her two colleagues went to the Engineering consoles.
"Through the Stargate from Earth 2 years ago." Eli replied as she looked him over and lowered her weapon as the terminal spoke the translation in Alterran.
"You are not Alrerran?" she asked him curious that the computer was speaking for him.
"Not exactly, but it is difficult to explain. How did you get on board?" he asked her as she smiled.
"There was an accident in space dock of Terra, and the ship was launched into FTL before we could escape. Because of the special programming of the Stargate, we knew it would be 5 years before we could dial home again." she said surprising Eli they had been in stasis that long. ""How long has it been since Destiny was launched?"
Eli was unsure of that answer, and looked at the three of them. "That is part of the problem, we don't know. Your people are the forst evolution of this form, mine is the second. Our best guess is 50 to 75 million years ago." Eli told her as all three of them gasped when the computer translated that bit of information.
One of the two men walked over to the navigation terminal, and verified the course the ship had taken thus far before he punched in some commands and pulled up a different log. It was the ship logs, and showed everything that had happened.
"The computers experienced a glitch 2 years after launch, and have been stuck in base operations mode only. It was only whatever happened today that forced them to restart and initiate the wakeup program that had been frozen in the process when it determined it was long overdue. You won't believe this, but it has been 82 million years." he said as he went through the logs quickly.
"One of the main power generators blew up and ruptured a Stellar Plasma tank which forced us from FTL before a hull breach was caused." Eli said as they pulled up current diagnostics and saw just how bad if shape the ship was in.
"I am activating the repair robots, but it will be weeks before we can even get to the Engoneering Bay to begin the repairs we need to bring the systems back online. Why are the stasis pods active?" one of the men asked him.
"My crew is in them, and they must remain in stasis if we are to survive." Eli answered lowering his hands.
"How many are there?" the woman asked clearly in charge.
"87, what should we do?" another asked.
"Not enough supplies?" she asked Eli.
"No, as I said the current situation is complicated. Suffice it to say, I have no idea how we will get to the next safe recharging point." Eli told her as she smiled.
"It seems we will have plenty of time for you to tell the story of how this ship is in such bad shape. In the meantime we will begin teaching you what you need to know in order to help us with repairs to the ship so we can get back underway." she said. "Leave the crew in stasis for now, if it is going to take weeks we need to conserve as many of the supplies as we can. Let's get to work Gentlemen. My name is Vici, this is Antoine and Pillet." she said introducing herself and the two men.
"My name is Eli." he replied as they did indeed get to work.
