CHAPTER THREEErlina ran down the corridor to what she thought looked like the kitchen door. When she opened it, she saw to her astonishment that there were five men as well as Mr. and Mrs. Dawes seated at the kitchen table. Gerry was there too, eating a large sandwich with some relish. For a moment the men stared at her before they rose to their feet. She then walked towards them. “I expect Dawes will already have told you,” she said, “that I am Miss Sherwood. The Marquis has now asked me to run the house for him and I need all your help desperately.” They still stared and next she turned to Dawes and said, “Dawes, his Lordship wants a glass of champagne at once and you are now engaged as his butler with Mrs. Dawes as his cook.” Mrs. Dawes flung out her arms in delight before she s
