It was still dark when we arrived at my house, just outside Catalla. Nestled on the edge of a dense forest, the house was well-hidden from the outside world. Liana walked beside me in silence, her earlier hope significantly diminished. I knew she was uncertain about her next steps, and honestly, so was I.
I allowed her to have her quiet moment. I wasn’t much for talking myself, so I didn’t say anything until we reached the small house and I opened the door for her. She gave me a small, thankful smile before stepping inside. I closed the door behind us and went over to the fireplace, lighting it to provide some warmth and light.
As the fire crackled and grew, I glanced over my shoulder to see Liana exploring the modest interior, her eyes taking in every detail.
