When I stepped outside, Jonah was waiting for me. The dim light inside the house had masked the extent of his bruised face, but now, under the bright sunlight in the alley, the damage was clear. He had hidden it well, and it reminded me that I still needed to get the full story of what happened when he went to meet Ralph. I told myself I’d get the details once we were safely out of here.
Jonah gave me a quick smile and gently grasped my arm, leading me to the end of the alley while scanning the bustling street.
“We need to get you some new clothes,” he said, glancing at me briefly. “You stand out too much.”
“It’s a bit hard to get anything else, considering where I’ve been staying for the past two days,” I replied.
