As soon as I stepped out of the huge office I released a sigh of relief. It was very difficult to understand Miss Nancy, the clerk's language. She had a hint of accent and every word she spoke she cleared her throat which was annoying. Bearing with that I managed to get my schedule for semester.
I heard the loud grumbling sound of my stomach and I stared everywhere to see whether someone had heard it. It was embarrassing. I had informed my mum that I'll eat something from the cafe so I skipped my breakfast.
Looking at the schedule one last time I shoved it back in my bag and decided to get some breakfast. As soon as I walked few steps I spotted the huge cafeteria on my right. I quickly lifted my arm to check the time. Glancing at my wrist watch I smiled in joy knowing that I had few more minutes for first class.
It was my father's ultimate, only wish that I should study business and handle his company. Being the only heir I agreed to it though I wanted to major in English literature. I simply loved English literature so I signed up for one extra class. One extra class wouldn't hurt, right?
Don't you have to be somewhere? I nodded my head at my subconscious sarcastic tone. Clutching the straps of my bag I walked towards the cafeteria, my footsteps clinking against the floor was catching attention but I didn't care much.
As I climbed up the steps of the cafeteria I groaned looking at the huge queue of students standing in front of me. They were not noticeable from far. Releasing a noisy breath I literally sprinted towards the shortest line and stood there. They were only seven students in front of me so yeah it was better than the other queue. I was standing behind some girl with a height equal to mine. Just then my eyes landed on her hair that was brown in colour. Like chocolate brown. Not dark though.
I glanced towards the source of the noise and stare at her amused, I guess she's bored so tapping her feet against the floor. She must have been standing from a long time. I bent forward to look at the line. Seems like someone was taking much longer time.
Can this day get any more better?
"Did you say something?" She asked turning towards me. I gape at her for a moment. She was beautiful. Her long silky brown hair were tied in a high ponytail. She had a oval shaped face with sharp cheekbones. Her dark brown eyes and peach colour lips surely could pass her as a model. As she narrowed her eyes at me in confusion I snapped my eyes back at her and shook my head.
"Umm no."
Wow! What a lame answer! Will you shut up? I glare at my subconscious and turn back at the girl who was staring at me.
"Oh? Guess I must have heard something. Hi I'm Kaustuki" She smiled.
"Hi I'm Sanyukta." I returned her smile while forwarding my hand at her. Where are you? In middle school. I rolled my eyes at my subconscious sarcasm. I can be really mouthy sometimes!
She stared at my hand for a second then quickly shook my hand with a grin on her face.
"Are you an Indian?" She suddenly asked while her hands left mine. Excitement was clearly evident in her voice. I stared at her confused but then nodded my head.
"Yes I am..."
Before I could complete my sentence she literally pounced on me. She hugged me while her arms wrapped around my neck, I awkwardly patted her arm not knowing how to react. I heard someone snickering from ahead. I parted away from her and blushed as guys were still glancing in our direction.
"Sorry for sudden attack? Umm I was just excited" She awkwardly folded her arm while pink hue shade painted her cheeks. I giggled looking at her. She looked like a cat in hot tin roof, ready to run away.
"No problem at all" I waved my hand. She met my eyes and nodded.
"Anyways. What are you studying here?" I asked her as she turned around to walk further. The line ahead of her was moving. Finally.
"I'm study Business Management. It's my first day today."
"Wow! We are classmates I guess." I mumbled excitedly. This must be a miracle considering I got a Indian friend and she took up same major as mine. God was kind on me I guess.
"Wow. We'll have so much fun together, I assure you." She tilted her head, her cheek resting on her shoulder while she talked. I nodded my head at her.
"Did you take any extra subject?" I asked her while moving further.
"Nah. I already think the subjects we have are enough. What about you?"
"I took English literature." I shrugged. English literature was something I wanted to major apart from Business Management. If dad had not blackmailed me into taking this I would have chose English literature and Psychology.
"Finally" Kaustuki exclaimed. I bent forward to see why was she excited. It was her turn to order the breakfast. I shook my head at her impatience. She looked at the menu for a second and then she ordered a English breakfast. Wow! I don't eat meat so that's out of question for me. But a full English breakfast, wasn't that like a lot?
After paying for her coupon she turned towards me, "I'll wait for you"
I gave her a curt nod and moved forward to order my breakfast. I scanned the menu displayed in front of me. What was this? Half of the menu had non veg stuff. I scanned around once more while my teeth sunk in my bottom lip.
"Can I get marinated olives and fresh orange juice?" I said.
The person nodded his head at me and typed it on the keyboard. At first I had thought of ordering sandwich but I don't have mood for eating bread in morning.
"That'll be five dollars miss"
I paid for the breakfast and quickly picked up the coupon and rushed towards the other queue. Kaustuki waved at me as soon as I was nearing her. Holding the coupon I stood behind her. I narrowed my eyes at the coupon in my hand. Five dollars was actually expensive for the breakfast. In our town the highest breakfast combo consisted of five dollars and here I only ordered olives and orange juice.
"Look at that. They are giving a new meaning to PDA" Kaustuki snorted while nudging me. Raising my head I followed her direction and gasped. There in the middle of two queues, a couple were sucking their faces. The boy's hands were curved around the girl's waist holding her, while she had her arms wrapped around his neck. I rolled my eyes looking at them. Really? A cafeteria. People come here to eat. Food.
"Get a room guys" Someone snickered from the queue and few other voices followed. Finally after a second the couple separated, both breathing heavy. Like they have ran a marathon. I almost turned my head but halted and tilted again to get a look at the boy.
I almost let out a low whistle looking at the boy. I admit I have seen my fair share of cute boys but he wasn't one of them. He was sexy, handsome. His inky black hair was messed up, falling out of place and some were adoring his forehead. His eyebrows were thick, pulled together forming a curve between. As his eyes were lowered I couldn't see them. I travelled my eyes lower, he had full roman shaped nose. Sharp and pointed. His lips were thick, pink and set in a grin. But they were swollen. With his well defined jaw and faint stubble he could sign up as a Calvin Klein model. His plain white tee and dark denim washed jeans defined his muscular body. He had muscles all right, in all right places. It was easy to tell that he worked out. Atleast thrice a week.
As if he sensed my gaze on him he looked up and met my eyes. I gasped as I finally got a clear view of his eyes. His eyes were extraordinary. Though they were black, they weren't simply black. They looked like two dark emeralds. He had the most alluring and captive eyes. They bore into my skin and I felt my skin prickle. The effect He had was astonishing. For a while long second he stared at me before his pink lips curved in a smirk. He winked at me and without giving me another glance walked towards some table.
Did he just wink at me?
That jerk. He winked at me after kissing another girl. The audacity of him. I looked back at the queue and frowned noticing that the girl was no where in sight. Guess she's cooling herself after kissing him, anyone would after kissing that hot piece of ass. Did you just call him hot piece of ass?
Control your hormones San! I reminded myself. I was turning into a horny b***h just thinking about those strong muscular arms and messy hair. What is wrong with me? I'm lusting after a boy, a bad boy to be precise?
"San are you fine?" I snapped my attention as I feel a tug. I turned my head at Kaustuki and gave her a assuring smile. How did I forgot that she was here? She must be thinking that I was a loon. Before I could correct her she yelled, "Yippee it's my turn next."
I absentmindedly nodded my head and turned around to look at him. Where was he? I was sure he walked in the sane direction but he was nowhere to be found. He must be sitting in some corner.
"Hey I'll wait for you at that further table" I only half heard what Kaustuki was mumbling and moved forward on my own accord. I can't wait to eat those marinated olives. I mean it's been long since I ate olives, three days to be exact. I don't know why but I'm obsessed with the olives. They are my love.
"Thank you" I smiled picking up my breakfast tray. I looked at the bowl of the olives and frowned. The bowl was so small and the olives were though filled till brim I wasn't satisfied. Soon olives, you'll be in my mouth I vowed looking at the bowl. Eww that didn't sounded creepy at all!
I ignored my snarky subconscious and walked away from the queue. As I look roamed my eyes around the place I frowned. There is no empty chair to sit. Where is Kaustuki anyways? I thought looking around. God I think she doesn't want to be my friend anymore. Who would be my friend anyway? I daydream most of the time. And I bite my lips.
"Hey I have been calling you for a while" I jerked as I felt a tap on my shoulder. Tilting around I sighed looking at Kaustuki. I thought she left me all alone.
"Sorry I couldn't find you. Let's go"
I followed her towards the table. It was a small table designed for four people but there were only three chairs. Only chair was missing. They might have took one chair from here. The cafeteria was packed and the chattering sound was echoing throughout the cafe.
"It's so crowded today." Kaustuki mumbled as she walked further.
"Tell me about it. Anyways our first class is together right?" I asked her after we reached the table. Her breakfast tray was placed on the table along with her purple scarf.
Without looking at me she nodded her head and walked towards her chair. Pulling her chair she settled comfortably and pushed herself forward adjusting to her comfort. I placed my tray on the table and took a seat opposite to her.
"Yeah...What? You're going to eat only this?" Kaustuki screeched as her eyes fell on my tray. I just am not very fond of food, I mean I barely eat all day. I don't like to eat much. Irony considering my half family is Italian.
"Yes. I'm not that hungry" I lied while picking up the orange juice. I was actually hungry but orange juice was enough to quench my hunger. One thing I love most other than olives are oranges. They are so tangy and mix of sour and sweet. Perfect blend.
"So have you recently shifted here or what?" Kaustuki asked while shaking her head. She also had orange juice in her tray, considering it was a English breakfast.
"Yes. Me, along with my parents recently shifted here from Boston. Dad wanted me to study here." I explained while popping one olive in my mouth. As soon as the green marinated piece entered my mouth I resisted the urge to moan.
"Oh wow. Boston huh? It must be awesome living there"
"It is. What about you?"
"I am from India, obviously. I came here for studies and I'm living as a PG near one of buildings across our college." Her voice was muffled as she stuffed the egg omelette in her mouth.
Just then we were interrupted by a new voice from the side of our table.
"Guys do you mind if I join?"
We both tilted out heads in the direction of voice and shook our heads. What was with the girls here? They looked like straight out of the magazine. The girl standing in front of us, well beside us looked beautiful with her midnight black hair falling on her sides. They were pinned by side with a clip. Her diamond cut face was almost flawless, without makeup. She had black eyes and cherry pink lips which reminded me of someone. Stop thinking of that bad boy!
"No problem" I pulled a chair beside mine to which she offered me a wide smile. Placing her tray on the table she settled beside me.
"Hi I am Sanyukta" I smiled at her avoiding to forward my hand like last time. She nodded her head at me, a smile pasted on her lips.
"Hi I am Vidhushi. It's my first day here." She responded
"Yeah? Even it is our first day. What is your major?" Kaustuki asked after some time as she was busy stuffing her face with toast. Seriously? I shook my head and continued to eat my olives.
"Business Management"
"Wow you're our classmate. By the way where are you from?" Kaustuki asked while she placed her fork in the plate. I stared at her in confusion. Did she not liked the food?
"I am from India"
"Can you please stand up?" Kaustuki asked in all serious, stern voice. Her voice was cold. I glared at Kaustuki. What was she doing?
"What happened?" Vidhushi asked in a scared, meek voice. She was intimadated by Kaustuki's voice. I felt bad for her and glared at Kaustuki. What was she doing?
"Kaustuki what are you doing?" I whispered giving her a look.
"Please stand up"
Vidhushi stood up in an instant from her chair and was about to pick her tray and leave when Kaustuki shot out her arm and grabbed her hand. She tugged her arm and before Vidhushi could say anything she pulled her into a hug. Surprised, Vidhushi stood in same position while Kaustuki was blabbering something excitedly.
Vidhushi looked at me, question clearly in her eyes that read, 'Is she crazy?' I smiled at that.
